This is a story about Gene, a passive young man drifting through life. It's the late 1960s, a time of free love, drugs and a live for today attitude, and Gene embraces it all, often with dire consequences. I love the eccentric characters author Dan Wakefield included in this story that so captures the flavor of the times. From Boston to Los Angeles and Hollywood, Gene follows a rather uneasy path that seems to provide few real answers, and the oddballs and misfits and dreamers he befriends and hangs with provide few answers either.

i found this book at a $1 sale at my local book store, expecting a quick read about the 60s. The novel drew me in instantly despite its minima plot. i love books that take you into the charecters mental state, and narrate in that way. Throughout the book the writing style changes to reflect genes attitude and mental state. it’s a story of a young man, lacking direction, in a confusing time. when gene is high, the book is written from a high mental state, drawing you in. it’s an authentic novel and i was surprised it’s not very popular. i greatly enjoyed the book. it ended in a lackluster way, yet perfect given the context of the novel. there was no better way to end it, life doesn’t wrap up into a neat bow, it’s a hotel, a liminal space where people float in and out never to be seen again.
