Halfway through this book, I stopped reading, as I couldn't really sympathize with any of the characters and the description of the beginnings of the civil war was too much for me. I could see it going to an uncomfortably colonial places, though I think the author was trying to show how colonialism was Not A Good Thing. The main human character especially bothered me, not only being a white, privileged male, but having a Mysterious Past and a History of Sleeping With Alien Women. Sigh.
