Generally speaking, this is really good for learning the basics of crochet. I haven't done all the projects in it, but I have learnt three stitch types and how to make a granny square. As this was my overall aim, I'm quite pleased!
Pages are clearly laid out and simple. If I couldn't follow the diagrams, the text clearly took me through what I needed to do, and vice versa. I've still probably made a few mistakes, but then I find knitting easier and learnt that first, so some adjustment needed!
When a book claims to be for “absolute beginners” then is it too much to assume it will teach you HOW to crochet BEFORE it gives you a pattern?! I now own a book of patterns (which could have been entitled that, by the way) which will be of no use to me until I buy ANOTHER book that teaches me the basics. What crochet needle goes with what size yarn? What are the basic stitches? The author does show pictures in the last few projects, but what are these based on? Are these even the right questions?
While I can knit quite competently, my attempts to crochet in the past usually ended up a knotted mess. With the help of this book, I was actually able to crochet a skein of yarn into a decently flat, roughly rectangular object. I’ve got more work to do to perfect this skill but I’m happy to be beyond the knotted mess stage!
This is for the absolute beginner and I read it for mostly learning technical terminology (Stitch names etc). I’ve been learning to crochet for about 2 months. I have a good knowledge of knitting (Been doing that for 40 years) but never learnt to crochet and always wanted to.
I recommend this book if you are a beginner and know little to nothing about crochet. The explanations of stitches etc (How to do a stitch, different stitches and their different names plus tips) is good and I liked it used both UK and US terminology. I still think it would be handy for some people to watch a quick tutorial on YouTube or something after learning a stitch to see it in action so to speak.
4 stars, this was a kindle unlimited read so free to read if you subscribe to the service
I read through this kinda fast. Because I learn half of it on YouTube. Will say learning in books is harder then in person, or YouTube. Idk the wording just confuse me sometimes. But visuals and patterns do help
I didn't know how to crochet before reading this book, but this combined with YouTube videos has let me learn how to do loads of stitches and successfully crochet some practice squares! Would highly advise even if you're more experienced and forget what the stitches comprise of!
Top book for newbies like me. If you have nobody to teach you this is a great book to have. In highlighted boxes are perfect quick tips and references to crochet terms. Patterns include pictures which for beginners , I think is vital. Everything I look for in a beginners book.
