This was an unusual and imaginative story. Small is certainly a good artist -- maybe too good, as I admit I found the slumped doll and the hopping head a bit creepy. I had read this as a child and not really liked it, although I found the funny part funnier back then.
This was beyond hysterical the first time I read it! I took it to work and one of my co-workers was in tears but the rest were "what's so funny??" (Oh well, there's something for everyone) I plan to get the reprint that is in color and a bigger format.
I am charmed by small format and illustrations of the original edition, the one my library lent to me. I am delighted at the details, like the names of the characters and the use of 'toadflax.' I believe children would find the adventure hilarious. And all readers probably appreciate the theme.
(Just whatever you do, don't anyone think of it as a metaphor for adoption. You'll know why I say this once you read it.)
What a beautiful and fun imagination this author has! My kids love the silliness and the illustrations are so well done - so much going on in each page that it keeps the kids busy for quite sometime. This is a keeper and one to share!
Perfect little picture book about some animals who think they’ve found the perfect child–she doesn’t misbehave or make a peep!–until, strangely, her head starts popping off. She’s a babydoll, which the animals don’t have a category for. Fun and silly.
An amusing moral tale about how children are good even if they're not "perfect." The illustrations are lovely, and the bit where the head hops is quite amusing to the kids and the adult reader.
