"Fairy tales don’t exist. There are no knights in shining armor and for all I know there is no such thing as real, honest-to-God, Earth-shattering romance. There is only comfort and ease when it comes to real love. I should consider myself lucky to have found someone who I’m comfortable with. There are no waves, there are no bumps in the road… so why do I feel like I want to crawl out of my skin?"
Life for Gabriella had always been straightforward, albeit a bit boring, but a passionate, almost magical, encounter with an enigmatic stranger catapults her into evolving into stronger version of herself. Her evolution does not come without consequence, though. Gabriella learns the hard way that turning on the lights can reveal just as much ugly as it can beauty. She discovers that the comfortable relationship she’d been idling in for too long is, in fact, far more dangerous than she ever imagined and finds herself desperate for the inexplicable comfort she finds in the arms of a stranger.
I'd certainly like to be a fearsome thing to behold...
I'm a new author out of New England where I live with my husband and devoted dog.
My favorite activity is drinking a good white wine by the pool while reading high-quality smut and pretending not to people watch from behind big sunglasses.
I highly encourage lending books! There's nothing like holding a great book in your hand and feeling the pages, but now that I've succumbed to the wonders of e-reading, I have to admit this whole 'lending' option is pretty nifty.
You did it Renee you wrote a GREAT FREAKING book “If every word I said, could make you laugh, I’d talk forever. I asked the sky just what we had, Oooo… it shone forever. If the song I sing to you, could fill your heart with joy, I’d sing forever. Let the love I have for you, live in your heart and beat forever.” location 5543
I loved this book for all the richness it beholds. The ,main character and her family were like many I know and the one I grew up in. Gabriella was one of 5 children. She had 4 brothers who I really think need to have a book of their own, just adding in my two cents. It has every element of the perfect romantic suspense. The first if romance, then gotta have the hate, lust, greed and fear. All in all I adored it. It made me laugh, cry and become angst ridden over the handsome Jonathan.
So why do I feel like this? Why do I feel like, given an ultimatum, I’d take the chance and give up everything for this man I’ve known for virtually no time at all?
Sometimes you will do anything you can right or wrong for that one person. Ella did that, some things were unthinkable! Her ex boyfriend was the ultimate idiot. I hated him from day one. A certain episode begins the lies and deceit. A college graduation trip begin on the Amalfi Coast and I think Garbriella has an epiphany when she meets this masked man.
Upon returning back to New York. so she started her first nursing job at St Francis. I dont think it is a spoiler, but who shows up? Jonathan YES. Anyways there are a few witty things going on between Ella and Brittany. She is the gossip girl of that wing of the hospital. I loved how she was so nosy and how Ella was not at all forthcoming with information. This puts Brittany in stealth mode, she needs gossip. It is funny!
The only element that I think people will find issue with is the Catholic aspect. I grew up that way and do things like bring a rosary to my sons basketball game. I totally relate to that part and the deep religion and values that the Kelly clan share. I think especially being a product of Catholic School I found comfort in their ways.
A true must read for fans of Kristen Ashley and Pamela Clare. I am amazed at this authors ability to hit a home run on her debut novel!
She handed me a small black box and politely let herself out of the room. Inside the box was an exquisite and ornate platinum rosary, lined with tiny diamonds. It was the most beautiful example of a rosary I’d ever seen and my breath caught when I saw it. location 4734
PPFF Rating: 3.5/5 Stars Love at first sight does exist.
This started out to be an awfully familiar story to me. You know, that feeling of being in a relationship which felt safe and comfortable and yet, you can't help but wonder if those are enough to make you stay. But then it also makes you ask yourself: am I willing to leave my comfort zone for the unknown? Does true love - one that's so powerful and Earth-shattering - even exist?
Well, this was the dilemma that Gabriella (the heroine) was going through. She was in a long-term relationship with David, someone she's known for years and whom she felt comfortable with. But she felt restless, like there was something missing in her life. So when she met Jonathan (a hot, young billionaire) at a masquerade ball in Italy during a family trip, she was almost in disbelief when she felt such strong feelings for someone whom she just briefly met. To think that she was with David for almost 4 years and never did she feel that much passion.
Passion or security? Jonathan or David?
You might think this is another angsty, love triangle story but it's definitely not. Gabriella and Jonathan did have their fair share of problems to overcome, they didn't exactly get together right away but it's really a "love at first sight" kind of romance. I know some people might not fully appreciate this 'instant love' angle but for me personally, I loved it. It made me feel good and believe all over again that perhaps such love does truly exist. I may be single but I'm not cynical. ;)
The title was also a clever idea. Very cute, R. Matthews. ;)
But I only gave "Her Soundtrack" 3 1/2 stars because I felt like, although their love at first sight story was quite believable (not cheesy or forced which was a big positive) and NO CLIFFHANGER, there was something missing. I kept hoping that there would be that extra BOOM factor but it didn't really come.
Having said that, I still recommend this to all the hopeless romantics out there. After all, you don't have to be two f*cked up individuals to find love.
Fell in love with the story from the very beginning. Something about being in Italy makes you fall in love immediatly, especially if you add a very sexy man into the mix.
Gabriella is in a relationship with David out of routine, comfort ant to please her parents, but as soon as she attends a masquarede party and meets Jonathan all that changes. Their attraction is immediate. It's love/ lust at first sight. Scared, Gabriella runs out on him though... Dumb girl.
Back in the Stated they run into each other and beggin a romance. She brakes things off with David and when thing seem to be going greate Ella also ends things with Jonathan and gets engaged with David shortly after. Ugh that made me so upset. I wanted tp slap some sence into her. While she's with David , he shows his true cools and abuses her. Luckily she gets out of it all a while finding out that David did some horrible things to Jonathan's sister Claudia as well.
Once you think David is out of the picture for good, he comes back with a vengeance attacking Claudia and Ella, but fortunately all turns out well and Jonathan and Ella end up together and happy.
Her Soundtrack was such an enjoyable read although I would have loved to read more about Claudia and watch her overcome all her fears and move on with her life and maybe fall in love. Other than that I give this book 5+ stars and I would defiantly recoment it. So go read it people!!!!
What a beautiful romantic story this is, from the beginning it easily flowed with descriptive writing. Gabriella meets her Prince Charming on her trip to Italy with her parents. Unfortunately the romance is cut short because of a business transaction that comes between her and the handsome stranger she met at the masquerade ball. The story picks up when she is back in the US and she has to choose between David the man she has been dating and expected to marry and the super rich Jonathan Di Luca. David is not all that he seems and there is a dark secret In his past that will have major consequences for Gabriella and Jonathan. A truly great debut novel for this author and I look forward to reading more from her.
**Her Soundtrack generously provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.**
There’s a song for every chapter in the aptly named title, Her Soundtrack, and I loved the author’s choice to include each one. Music and reading most always go hand in hand for me so it’s especially rewarding to listen to the songs of the author’s choosing. Ms. Matthews novel follows the journey of Gabriella on a passionate journey of mystery, angst, and discovery. The romance poses as the instant love variety and the development of the story moves at a rather fast pace making the reader wish for a just a little bit more to their story. There were times in which I felt like I was speed reading at the pace in which the story was written. However, I found the characters instant connection completely believable, testament to the author’s ability to draw into her characters.
Ella and Jonathan embarked on a whirlwind evening of lust and passion. Their meeting proved to be one the most romantic introductions between main characters and really drew me into their story just as quickly as they were drawn to each other. Ella’s character bothered me at times because she seemed quite contradictory – her religion and her actions opposing each other. But she was a woman to found she needed a man she barely knew; a man who became her ultimate savior. Ella tells her own story in this book and overall her voice lent itself to being an honest woman with an intriguing story to tell. The man in whom she finds a connection immediately seemed rather insecure at times but moved on to the point of obsession. Jonathan’s infatuation with Ella led to her survival. They became wrapped up in each other’s need. The villain of the story, David, provided just enough angst and crazy to keep readers on their toes with worry about Ella’s safety.
Her Soundtrack came off as a bit rushed to me especially towards the end. The characters intrigued me and their story was definitely good but something was missing. It wasn’t a story I was completely taken with to the point of needing to finish it quickly even though it was an easy, fast read.
This book was good. I loved how it started out and developed in to Ella finding her self through a 'break from reality' and ending up meeting her true soul mate.
I found myself coming upset and wanting to reach through the pages when she became weak and took David back and how she continued to allow him to treat her so poorly. I just wanted to yell and slap her around a bit to ensure that she somehow, someway grew a backbone and stood up for herself and her unborn child.
Then, as fate would have it, di Luca came back in to her life and basically took no prisoners when claiming her as his, once and for all. The efforts and the details he went through to things special for her were amazing.
I loved reading how their lives progressed over the next few months but I kept waiting to flip the page to find out when the evil spawn, David, would come back in to the limelight. I was a bit shocked when it did, I know I probably shouldn't have. But I was so engrossed with this book and storyline, that it just completely took me by surprise. I thought for sure that the worst was to be feared in regards to Claudia but I was happy to learn that my fears weren't accurate at all.
The ending was sweet and just perfect for the storyline that R. Matthews put in place for the two main characters: Johnathan and Ella.
There was no real cursing in the book and the sex scenes were very mild but passionate all wrapped in to one. It was a breath of fresh air to read such a beautiful, loving story of two soul mates meeting unexpectedly and making their way through life, together.
I am really not that good at writing reviews. But here goes.
Did I enjoy the book? Yes, I enjoyed reading Ella and Jonathan's love story. It was sweet and loving.
What about the characters? Ella was great! She was a kind, compassionate and she knew how to give of her love. Jonathan was perfect. He was generous and loving. He had so much love he needed to give. David, well he was mean and hateful. Claudia was sweet.
Did I like the story line? I thought Ella and Jonathan story touched on a variety of emotions. There was the excitement of their meeting, you could feel their connection. There was some anxiety of wondering if they would stay together. There was some pain, anger and sadness.
Would I recommend it? Yes
Why only 3 stars? Even though I enjoyed the book, for me I just needed a little more. I'm not sure if I felt the story was rushed a bit or if I needed it to get a little deeper. I wanted the characters to develop a little more. I wanted a little more of David so there would be more angst to the story. The ending was good but I needed a little more there too.
Great Read When I read the synopsis for this book, I found interesting and decided to give it a go thinking it would be an Ok read. I was so wrong. This book is amazing. I immediately fell in love with Ella and then, I fell in love with Jonathan. Ella is that kind of person you want to be friends with and Jonathan is swoon worthy. I found myself rooting for Ella and broken hearted for her. One aspect I dislike on many self-published books is the manipulation of the truth on an attempt to create angst. This book is truthful yet, it is packed with deep-rooted emotions. The author took a huge chance with the instant love aspect of this novel. ****SPOILER**** They said those three words on their second time together. But it was done so beautifully and convincing that I didn’t question it. This book made me laugh and cry, feel happy and angry. There are some deep and traumatic events addressed in this book. The author addressed the subject of rape with respect and compassion. The author has a pure voice that flows smoothly. I can’t wait to hear His Soundtrack. I give this debut a solid five stars.
I am not sure where to begin! I looooved this story. I read it in one sitting from start to finish and couldn't put it down for a minute! From the first to last page there was so much emotion that it had me sighing, crying and holding my breath throughout. I felt for Ella from the start however there were points when she became weak that I wanted to scream. Jonathon was a dream and I know it's fiction but it still makes me want to believe in fairy tales when I read something like this. I don't want to give too much of the story away to people who are yet to read it (and I highly recommend that you do). Let's just say if you don't read it you are missing out. The storyline is original and unlike anything I have read so far this year. You will fall in love with Ella and Jonathon and even though the story is "complete" you will still want more! R. Matthews I will be reading your next book for sure:)
I really love this book. Jonathan and Gabriella is one of my favorite couples after reading this book. I hope there is a sequel. R. Matthews writing is amazing.
I really enjoyed this book, it had everything I fall in love with. Great characters, well written, love, some angst, and a little suspense.
In the beginning I understood that Ella and David were not right for each other. She was living a life for others with the exception of her chosen profession which others were not so thrilled about but Ella loved helping people. She saw things differently. David was all about statistics and society. He wanted it all like his family. Power, money, all all. But although they have dated for years something was missing. They have never been intimate and Ella didn't feel a bond so to speak.
Now when she takes a trip to Italy everything changes at a a masquerade ball with a beautiful, blue eyed stranger. Mr. Jonathan di luca.....
Yum!!!! At first I thought he is HOT and a smooth talker but he is so much more than that. But their quick tryst doesn't last long before Ella flees away and back to New York where her mind is constantly plagued by Jonathan. But has fate would have it she has also plagued his mind for a week and then there he is at her job.
Oh the things this man says. He is sweeter than freaking maple syrup, now he has me....
He would tell Ella what a dick David was but never elaborate and you knew something was off with him the entire time but couldn't quite put a finger on it. You never really fall in love with him nor even feel sorry that Ella cheated on him, maybe there was no connection, he just felt boring I guess. But oh does his true self emerge and you, loathe him. He is a sick demented man that's for sure. But enough about the psycho, what's most important Is Ella and Jonathan.
So I'm not one to believe in instant love, attraction yes most definitely but love not so much, but with Jonathan and Ella I absolutely loved it. I was excited to see that they had that and truly they were made, molded and created for one another. She became a new person chasing what she wanted from life, standing up for herself and he found someone who saved him from and empty shell.
It was just so freaking sweet. I loved that he called her love, I loved how he wanted to care for her, I loved he had control issues, I loved he was so protective, I loved that no one else existed to him when it came to Ella, I loved he didn't spook so easily, I loved how he talked to her father. Heck I love everything about that blue eyed man.
I think the author did and amazing job at her first novel, I just didn't want it to be over, I wanted to see more of their lives especially now with the new bambino. :) I furiously went through the last pages waiting or trying to will more words to appear.
WOW! What a "Complete" story. This story had all the elements you can think of, a young inexperienced girl who has spent her life being the good girl...a billionaire playboy who has shielded his heart since the passing of his mother...a holiday fling that lingers on in their minds...and a re-ignition of the passionate affair just when they both thought it was a once off situation...
Then comes the complications...she's already taken, he's a rival to her father's business...even as the story progresses you are eased into the pitfalls and obstacles...and while you sit on the edge of your sit to see what will happen Ms Matthews walks you through the heartache and pain...almost holding your hand through to the next level of the story.
Ms Matthew's gentle development of the characters allows the reader to get to know and believe in them, encouraging you to follow the characters along their journey watching their backs for them! I found myself adoring Gabriella and her growth into real adulthood...and Jonathon was an assertive Alpha male that was so easy to fall in love with.
The story line is full of love, laughter, heartache, anger and overall personal growth. A wonderful story worth reading all the way to the end. I even sort of Hope that Ms Matthews has more to tell about these wonderful characters!
Fairy tales do come true... except in reality they do come at a price.
Gabriella and Jonathan fell in love at first sight, first touch, first kiss. Fate must have intervened, because here they were two strangers whose lives were about to intersect and change the course of their lives, thousands of miles from home.
Although we normally suspend our brains from disbelieving when we read a romance novel, it does take a bit more to turn off the skeptic in us to believe that two people could intersect like our characters do. Not only do they meet and fall in love, but their families have also intersected in an indirect manner and their pasts have also touched each others. Do not want to spoil the story for you, but just believe and you will find this to be an enjoyable uplifting story of a love that cannot be denied.
Renee Matthews has written for us a great first novel. It has tender characters full of innocence as well the evil souls that make for an interesting plot line. For a first novel, I am impressed. Her characters are well defined; writing style in descriptive and concise; and her imagination and plot line are enchanting.
The sequel to this novel is now published and available to all. I will be reading it next as I am curious as to what happens from Jonathan's POV as the story continues.
3.5 stars for me. I really enjoyed Her Soundtrack.. I was hooked from the beginning and enjoyed it the whole way through. I love a good HEA with some drama and excitement sprinkled throughout, and Her Soundtrack did not disappoint. I LOVED that each chapter was titled with a different song and artist ranging from Closer by Nine Inch Nails, Forever by The Beach Boys, to Hallelujah by Rufus Wainwright, and many more. For me, I would of liked to have seen the development of Ella and Jonathan's relationship in a bit more detail during the beginning of the book. It was clear Ella and Jonathan had an intense physical connection from the very start, but I wanted to read more about the emotional bond they formed. I also wanted to see more of David throughout the middle of the book. He seemed to have disappeared for a bit and I was left wondering if and when he would show back up. And when he did show back up, I was wondering why then, why to that location, and what caused him to do what he did. Overall, I am very impressed with R. Matthews debut novel. She knows how to tell a good story!! I will definitely be looking forward to more from this talented author.
I love this story!! Spoiler alert. I was given this story in exchange for an honest review. Thank you :) Ella is a good Italian and Irish catholic girl from an affluent family of hard working means. She dated David all through school but something never seemed right with him - even though he was always a complete gentlemen and everyone thought they fit together. While on a trip to Italy at a masquerade ball she meets a mysterious man and the chemistry between them is hot hot hot!! When she returns home she can't stop thinking of him and when she meets him at her work she thinks she dreaming and then she finds out that he is her father's rival...Readers: this is just the tip of the iceberg..this story is filled with events that will keep you wanting more and Jonathan is a masculine sexy man with just the right amount of alpha male with the most endearing heart for Ella. I didn't want the story to end. Highly recommended. This can be read as a stand alone story.. But I can't wait to read the sequel :)
A really truly enjoyable read with the right amount of love, loss, sex, religion and family moments. I really am looking forward to the second book in this series.
I really enjoyed this novel by newcomer, R. Matthews! The author creates an inst-love romance with two wonderfully memorable characters. This novel full of romance, heat, and high-intensive drama was quick to read and most impressive. Both main characters were likeable, strongly supportive, and protective in nature.
The scene where Ella and Jonathan first meet at the “masquerade” is my favorite with the romantic intrigue of who her dancing partner is with his deep blue eyes peaking out from behind his black eye mask. It was just so incredibly intimate (sigh). And, then after they’re done dancing he kisses her at the bottom of a narrow staircase along the ocean-side terrace whereby he declares his wanting to f**k her immediately. She just keeps kissing him until she’s breathless and a multitude of fireworks explode in the background. How explicitly intimate is that! Both characters question their own sanity because of the mysterious and unbelievable nature of the whole evening. Mind-boggling to say the least! I knew from that scene on, that I would not be disappointed in this newly released novel. The only problem I had, hence the awarding of only 4 stars, was the fact that Ella carried around rosaries all the time, but engaged in sexual relations before she was married. I just thought that was kind of hypocritical if one was so religious. Other than that the intrigue was there. Some mystery. A bastard of an ex-fiance’. A loving supportive family. And, a passionate romance.
They connected on a highly-intensive level that spoke volumes to their ease and comfortability with each other. So much more so than what Ella could ever think possible. And, this is how they were when only knowing each other for a short period of time. The author just made this couple so believable that one couldn’t help but care that they hopefully would achieve that “happily ever after”. Ella was a girl with many devotions, and Jonathan was quickly becoming one of those “devotions”. At first, I thought that Jonathan was bordering on obsessive, but then I realized that he was just a bit insecure. His past is full of sadness riddled with huge expectations that are anticipated from him. And, when current boyfriend, David, proclaims that Jonathan and him have a troubling past, he wants her to have nothing to do with him. “So that’s why a man like Jonathan would even look twice at a woman like me”, she concludes. He was just using her. She, therefore, cuts all ties with him. Poor Jonathan just doesn’t understand what happened between them, and tries to reach out to her. But, Ella won’t even speak to him. What will she do when she finds herself in a unexpected delicate situation? Go crawling back to Jonathan or take David up on his sudden reasonable offer? What happens next is darkly disturbing and abusive. Will Ella ever find her way out of this nightmare?
Moving Pictures Silent Films... I put it on repeat and cried until I was unconscious...
Oh is this the dream I’ve been saving? Oh where the heart beats slower and slower To almost nothing Almost nothing Almost nothing
I took it for love or At least something beautiful Out there in the spotlight I turned around suddenly Turned around squinting
And saw that it was headlights And then the truth The truth was bearable Oh and imminent Bearing down on these two shadowed animals...
Ella needed Jonathan in a way like no other now. He had to cleanse her of all the filth and disgust that remained inside her with David’s horrifying actions. So, he speeds her off to the one place in the world that they can be together to bask in their love – the place that they first meet...Italy. And, from there, their life takes on a whole new meaning. Whatever had happened in the past, would now stay in the past, and they were a team. A pair. A couple. Forever bound by their love and the amazing gift that they were given because of their devoted love and unselfish commitment to each other.
The novel was pretty erotic. Steamy. Intimately passionate. Especially the scene on their wedding night. Jonathan had a pretty seductively titillating imagination! He was definitely a unbelievable lover! And, he was patient with Ella even when he realized that she was an inexperienced sexual partner.
I also really liked the title of the book that was stimulated by each chapter being named after a song and its artist. I love a lot of those songs myself, and I love the song “Forever” written by Dennis Wilson and Gregg Jakobson, especially when actor John Stamos sings it – beautiful with such a romantic message.
Can’t wait to read the sequel written from Jonathan’s POV. He is definitely one of my male favorite characters that I have read about this year. One couldn’t help but just swoon when he was mentioned. Patiently waiting for 2014...
“Forever” ~ Beach Boys sung by John Stamos
“If every word I said, could make you laugh, I’d talk forever. I asked the sky just what we had, Oooo....it shone forever. If the song I sing to you, could fill your heart with joy, I’d sing forever. Let the love I have for you, live in your heart and beat forever.” (sigh)...
I quite literally JUST finished this book not more than a minute ago, so I thought...why not review while my emotions are still fresh?
Let me first start off by saying that this was the first romance novel I have ever read. That does not mean my review should be discredited...I am an avid reader with an affinity for suspense/thriller books and chick lit.
This is a book that kept getting better and better. You grow relationships with the characters. Your emotions ebb and flow WITH the characters.
In the first chapters, although entertaining, I started getting a sense of "ok, I see how this is going to end", due to the predictable nature of most romantic stories, whether it be in literature or cinema. But NOTHING could have prepared me for the twists and turns experienced along the way.
My favorite character in the book...well, that's a tie between Ella and Claudia. I would say it was Claudia hands down, but there isn't enough of her in the book for me to write a substantial review as to why she was the best. Ella, however, becomes your pseudo best friend. It's like she confides in you, and she is such a multifaceted character that she is bound to relate to everyone, one way or another. Claudia is a sweetheart, and you can feel her tenderness come alive through the pages of the book.
I disliked David from the beginning, his character is just fake and vapid. R. Matthews did an excellent job of conveying the superficial relationship led by Gabriella and David. Though I would NEVER condone cheating, I did in the case of Gabriella. But at the end of the novel, my hatred for David grew. I LOATHED David. David is where the majority of the suspense factor in the book comes in. You as the reader will find yourself wanting to be in Jonathan's shoes as he punches David in the face.
On the topic of David is where my one somewhat negative critique comes in. When it is revealed what the "beef" between David and Jonathan was in high school, I wished that the situation was a bit more sticky, not just over a girl. I would have liked to have seen more substance in the story of their feud. Though it is revealed later on what the REAL story is, if the original story was a bit more edgy and dangerous, the reader would have been able to connect more with Ella feeling as though Jonathan was using her to get back at David. That is the only place in the book where Ella lost me in terms of supporting her rationale.
But other than that...FABULOUS, FABULOUS, FABULOUS. The sex scenes were so vivid, it made me with I had my very own personal Jonathan di Luca kissing my feet at all times. You can just feel his hunky-ness.
I haven't talked much about the most important factor of the novel: the bond between the two main characters. From the start, can feel the love-at-first-site chemistry. You UNDERSTAND why they are saying "I love you" after just a couple of dates. You know they mean it, and that it is more than real. If the book didn't have that level of reality, it would have been ruined. But once again, R. Matthews was phenomenal in getting the reader to sense every element of the story.
As Ella's pregnancy progresses, you get just as excited to meet the baby as she is. At her ultrasound appointment, when they said they couldn't determine the sex, I was beyond bummed. It's just all too real.
The end of the novel left me wanting more. Correction: NEEDING more. The sequel-inviting ending was done with a purpose: the author is currently working on book number two, His Soundtrack.
In conclusion: R. Matthews is a truly gifted wordsmith who should continue her endeavors in writing, whether her body of work consist of solely the masquerade series, or other novels. If you are in doubt of whether or not to purchase...JUST DO IT! You will not be disappointed :)
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
The author very cleverly named her book, Her Soundtrack then entitled each chapter with the name of a different song from her eclectic taste in music. She begins the synopsis for this book by stating that “Fairy tales don’t exist” but she has proved that wrong with her first body of work. From the first time Ella and Jonathon meet the author makes you want them to be together. The characters display their emotions on their sleeves allowing the reader to experience their joy and pain as if it is first hand. Looking forward to see what will come next from R. Matthews. I only gave this book 3 stars because I only read the free excerpt. As soon as I read the book in its entirety I am sure it will be a 5 star…stay tuned for another review.
Updated Review: July 26, 2014
Renee Matthews is a new author on the scene and her debut novel, Her Soundtrack is not one to miss. Unlike many of her peers in this genre, Ms. Matthews draws the reader in using her storyline not a sexy cover. Her plot holds the reader’s attention, making you want to get involved in the story, become a part of it. Ella, the main character is one the reader can relate to, I wanted to call her up and ask her to be my friend. I immediately fell in love with Ella. She’s sweet and caring, innocent but not naïve. Jonathan, her love interest is domineering but not a jerk; he’s rich and powerful but doesn’t use that to his advantage with Ella. Ok, well maybe a little but not in a bad way. I would have liked to have experienced the story through more written dialogue and less narration. In many of the passages the "narrator" tells the reader what happened but we don't see it in actual written dialogue. Ms. Matthews does a superb job however with the characters interior monologue. Her use of character action and their thoughts all contribute to either the characters themselves or the plot. They are interspersed seamlessly throughout the scenes.
The author did a great job weaving in past history very quickly. It did not take over the story or distract from the main plot line. The development of the story moved at a rather fast pace to hold the reader's interest.
I applaud the author for picking and sticking to one POV, instead of moving from head to head or retelling each experience from both POVs as many authors are tempted to do these days. The author switched “language” and dialect seamlessly when having characters speaking. She also does great in the dialogue sections and does not fall into using all those common physical impossibilities: “he grimaced”, “she snarled”…like we so often see in this genre. I would recommend this book to readers. It was emotionally charged and thankfully, this series is not over - the next book is His Soundtrack and I hear there’s a possibility for more from this series in the future.
As the two books that comprise the Masquerade Series, these stories were simply beautiful and delight to read. Gabriella Kelly is the only daughter in an old fashioned and religious family. Raised to always do what is expected of her, she is dutifully in a passionless relationship with the son of a wealthy family, where it is expected that she will get married and settle into her life. But on a trip to Italy with her parents, Ella starts to question her life and relationships when she steps out of her normal routine and meets a handsome stranger at a masquerade party. The feelings that Jonathan di Luca elicits in Ella convince her that a marriage lacking in passion and depth of emotion is something she cannot endure, and she embarks on a tumultuous journey with Jonathan that tests them both and their love for one another. Her Soundtrack tells the story from Ella’s point of view. From their first chance meeting in Italy to their growing relationship in New York, this book is difficult to put down because it just sucks you in with the sweetness and passion that these two people feel for one another, and the obstacles that they are forced to endure to finally reach their happily ever after. What I found unexpectedly enjoyable is that His Soundtrack was not simply a continuation of their relationship. Rather, it was the truth about what happens in their “happily ever after”, and how much they both have to fight for their relationship to actually work. Their marriage was not sugarcoated, but the problems were raw and real and it was heartbreaking to get inside Jonathan’s head and watch him as he saw his life crumble before him. The lengths to which this man would go to save his family and fight for his marriage was purely touching. When we were first introduced to this couple, I was sure that this was going to be the typical story where the wealthy obsessive man stalks his innocent prey, because Jonathan did give off those Christian Gray/Gideon Cross type stalker vibes. But when we get to see what exactly is going on inside Jonathan’s head in His Soundtrack, the depths of his love for Ella and all that she is, the books become so much more. A few editing issues aside, these two books were just beautiful. I felt there may have been a story starting to develop between some of the siblings, but it appears that these two books comprise the entire series, so I am not sure where the author was going with that (or if it was just in my head). Full of sighs and heartbreak and even some laughs as an overwhelmed Jonathan tries to navigate through what I imagined to be a Walmart, these two stories were truly about an enduring romance and an absolute pleasure to read.
Let me first say that I love to read books from new authors. I feel that this is what writing is all about. Every new author has her or his own way of telling a story and in this book I loved the way R. Matthews wrote this fairy tale love story.
The main characters in this book are Gabriella Kelly and Jonathan diLuca, they meet at what else a masquerade ball in Italy while Gabriella in their on vacation with her parents. (Does this remind you of a certain fairy tale?) They meet, Jonanthan is smitten with Ella (Gariella's nickname) and then like the missing glass slipper she disappears only to later to have her prince see her again.
Jonathan is every women's fantasy if you are into the alpha male. He is handsome, rich, smart, controlling and domineering especially with Ella and so consume with his love for her that like I say "Who wouldn't want that". Ella who is young and naieve instanly falls for Jonathan and realizes that she is not in love with her boyfriend David Huntington, who may a say is a real creep. I had this guy pegged from the begining....Comes from years of reading these books to get a feel of certain characters and this guy I hated from the very begining of the book. Good riddance to him thanks to Jonathan.
What I also loved about this book was the way that the author incorporated a playlist of songs for each chapter's title. The songs went with what the chapter was about perfectly. I also loved the fact that she brought into the story Ella's heritage. Coming from an Italian/Catholic background myself I could understand exactly what Ella's family was like and how she grew up with such a warm surrounding of love and protection.
When doing review I don't generally like to give away too much of the story because I feel that the reader may bypass the book over without really giving the book a chance. I do feel that this book is so worth reading. It is such a sweet, sweet love story and you just want Ella and Jonathan to be together and be happy. I think that anyone who reads it will totally agree with me. I highly recommend this book to readers who belive in fairy tales!
I am looking forward to reading more from this author in the future.
Gabriella is from a very religious family. She has been with her boyfriend David for years and they haven't went beyond kissing and hugging. Gabriella likes to think that this is because she is so religious and she wants to save herself for marriage, but it's not that at all. She just doesn't feel sparks when David touches her and he's more of an acquaintance that you kiss sometimes when you feel like it rather than a boyfriend. There's just nothing there.
Gabriella and her parents go to Italy for her father's business. Gabriella's mother hears of a masquerade party and tells Ella. They were supposed to go together, but some problems came up which led to Ella going to the party on her own.
While she was there, she meets Jonathan. Jonathan was very forward with Ella and instead of feeling repulsed, she was aroused.
"At that moment I knew, there was no way I wasn't going to give in to Jonathan di Luca."
Jonathan led Ella down a staircase and proceeded to give Ella what she's never experienced with anyone before.
"The feeling of his touch on my skin, the emotion-everything was too much to handle. I had never felt like that before in my life."
Before things go too far, Ella pulls away from Jonathan and runs away from him. She couldn't believe that she almost gave in to a stranger. Ella goes back to New York. Ella is a nurse and she was supposed to be forgetting Jonathan di Luca, but it's kind of hard to do that when she sees him in the hospital she works at and he is introduced to her as the board member who donated the new wing for the hospital.
Ella tries so hard to stay away from Jonathan, but it just wasn't possible. They go through a lot of trials together and I got so frustrated with Ella when she pushed Jonathan away. I wanted to reach inside my kindle and slap some sense into her.
David.
I loved this book and I hope Jonathan's sister Claudia gets her own book. Pretty please R. Matthews. I love her and she deserves to be happy!
Let me start off by saying WOW and if you want to read a romance novel that will grab a hold of your attention and take you on an emotional/swooning joyride, READ THIS BOOK!!!
I have never been so grateful for a recommendation by an author so much in my life!
Let me tell you why. Two words. Jonathan di Luca! Holy cow! If there ever needs to a fictional character to come to life, it's him!! Damn that man can melt your heart because lord knows he did mine.
So, aside from the #1 reason to read this book being Jonathan, the story is wonderful! It really can capture your attention almost immediately and once you get to a particular part in the book (which I will not disclose in this review) it is almost literally impossible to put down!
Honestly, it is so hard to write this review without given too much away but let me say this. This book does not lack Romance, Drama, Suspense and Swoon!
I can't say enough how much I loved this book. I have a number of books that I buy in paperback in addition to buying the ebook. I do this because I love the stories and want to show further appreciation for the author. I don't know, it's a weird thing I do, but let me say, this book has made that category. I look forward to adding it to my home bookshelf in the near future.
Thank you R. Matthews for the outstanding story and the recommendation. It was an honor to read your book and I will certainly spread the word to all the bookworms I know. Congratulations on the wonderful work. I can't wait to read your next book!
This was a great romance book. Not only did it keep the reader interested, but it shows the change in a woman who goes from doing what others what to doing what she wants.
Gabriella is a devote daughter who does everything that her parents want of her to make them proud. She has also been a loyal girlfriend to David for four years. That was until her graduation trip with her parents.
Out of character for Ella, she goes to a party alone and meets Jonathan. While with Jonathan, she does things she's never done before. Before it can go too far, she quickly leaves not thinking that she'd ever see him again..but she was wrong.
Back home Ella is a nurse in the new cancer ward at the hospital a few blocks from her townhouse. She's still loyal to David, but somehow knows that it's not going to work. Just when she thinks that, Jonathan comes back in her life.
How does Jonathan take Ella from being the woman who does everything that she's told to a woman who thinks for herself and does what will make her happy? Does Ella stay with David, or does she leave him and go to Jonathan?
Pick up Her Soundtrack by R. Matthews to find out the answers...
It has all the key ingredients for a great romance: a hot couple that you can't help but root for, intense attraction, passion, a bit of mystery, heartbreak with a happy ending, & good supporting characters. At first I felt bad for David as the romance between Ella and Jonathan took flight. But you can't blame them with a great backdrop in the Amalfi Coast to lose your inhibitions. I just love Italy. Ah the romance. Early on Ella stood up to be her own strong person, but a little ways into the book she fell back on that strong woman. Her reasons made sense, but it was still tough to see. And without spoiling it, I'll just say, I really love how it turned out in the end. Oh, and that a certain someone got what was coming to him, and then some. Although I would have liked for there to be more dealing with said ass. I can't wait to read the continuation in Jonathan's voice. I like that the sequel will not just be a retelling of the original. Those rarely pull through to separate itself enough from the original telling.
I'd heard that 'Her Soundtrack' by R. Matthews was a good story but I didn't think it would suck me in the way it did. Despite many typos and an annoying 'reunion' with the villian, I can certainly understand why so many readers were recommending it. As the good, Catholic daughter of a wealthy, upstanding Irish-Italian family, Gabriella (Ella) Kelly seems to have the perfect life. Newly graduated from nursing school, she accompanies her parents to Italy for a short holiday while her father's there on business. There, she attends a charity event and meets the man of her dreams. The only problem with this, is that she's practically engaged to her boyfriend of four years. Realizing she doesn't love her boyfriend and that she can't continue in a relationship with him, even if the man she meets is in Italy, Ella breaks things off once she gets home to New York. Unfortunately, her boyfriend has an unknown dark side, and doesn't take to well to rejection. An absorbing tale of passion, mystery and romance, you'd be silly to pass this one up!
I received this book thru the author for an honest review. I loved this story and can't wait for book 2! I love Gabriella and I hate David (lmao) and I want a Johnathan for myself... Okay the story has a wonderful plot with a strong heart filled story. I loved the way the families stuck together. I don't wasn't to spoil it for those who haven't read the book. I wish I could of read it straight thru the author wrote this story wonderfully I had to know what was going to happen. There were times I loved Gabriella's attitude and what she was doing and there where times I wanted to slap her lol. It has sad parts, happy parts, sexy parts but not nasty erotic just sexy romance if you know what I mean & sweet parts. I absolutely loved this book I can't thank you enough for letting me review your book. If you love a good romance with heart in the story this book is for you!
