The Mill Creek: An Unnatural History of an Urban Stream

Rate this book
This book describes more than two hundred years of human misuse and abuse of an invaluable natural resource in Cincinnati, Ohio. This history of the creek documents, for the first time, how changes to the quality of the natural environment occur over time and how ignorant, careless and irresponsible human behavior can destroy and diminish the very resources that people rely on to sustain them.

This is such a great book on the history of the Mill Creek (not that there's many books written on the topic). It's fairly comprehensive, covering the developmental history of the creek, from its natural geologic ancient changes to recent human interventions, both harmful and restorative. Occasionally, Hedeen throws a bit of off-handed humor into his somewhat relaxed writing, and overall it's an easy read, even when he dives into number-oriented descriptions of events. Recommended for all readers interested in Cincinnati history. I thought I knew quite a bit about the Mill Creek, but this book provides so much more than I expected.
