She woke up cold, practically naked and in a stranger's bed. Sophie couldn't remember a thing…and she sure didn't recognize the brooding loner who was nursing her back to health. But still she felt drawn to the tempting mountain man….
The last thing Seth Brogan wanted in his cabin was a mysterious, sexy woman. Especially since he could tell she was running from something—or someone. But Seth wasn't as tough as he pretended, and he soon realized he couldn't refuse to help this damsel in distress.
Eileen Wilks’ first book, a Silhouette Desire published in 1996, hit the USA Today Bestseller List and was nominated for Romantic Times' Best First Short Contemporary award. Since then, her books have appeared consistently on national bestseller lists. With thirty two books in print and novellas in nine anthologies, she has been a finalist in the prestigious Rita Awards three times, as well as receiving several nominations from Romantic Times, including one for Career Achievement in Series Romantic Suspense.
Each book in her World of the Lupi series gains a larger audience. It was originally sold in the Romance section of bookstores, but more and more you will be able to find copies cross-shelved under Sci-Fi and Fantasy as the popularity of the series grows!
Eileen has lived in the West Texas town of Midland, TX for over 30 years--three years as a young teen, and the remaining years since she moved back here as an adult. When she first started writing over 10 years ago, it hit her like the first drink for an alcoholic . . . or the first kiss for Romeo and Juliet.
She came to writing romance in a roundabout way. Having read and loved science fiction for years, that’s where she first tried her hand when the writing bug bit. Somehow her stories always ended up having a strong romantic subplot, but she hadn’t read a romance since the early 80’s and didn’t think “those little books” were her kind of stories. But when a friend in her critique group began working on a romance novel, Wilks decided she needed to give the genre another try. She asked her friend to recommend some titles--and quicker than you can say “Jayne Ann Krentz,” she fell in love. The genre had been busy growing up while she wasn’t watching. These days, with romances comprising over 50% of the mass market books published in the U.S., there are romances to appeal to almost every taste--historicals, paranormals and contemporaries that range from romantic suspense to romantic comedy, from inspirational to sizzling.
Eileen covered a lot of territory before coming home to Midland, having lived in Canada and Venezuela as well as twelve U.S. cities in five states.

I really, really enjoyed the beginning of the story, when Seth rescued and nursed Sophie. I didn't like the bits when they were back in Houston all that much, because his personal insecurities (and of course her own tragic past) had this hot/cold vibe happening between them, and I thought they got past that even in the mountains.
I found Seth thinking of the two of them as Beauty and the Beast a bit smile-worthy. Tom Rasmussin's appearance (and the fact that Sophie doesn't realise how much he is attracted to her at all) was appropriate for his later portrayal in his own book, and the show was occasionally stolen by Rocky. Even Sophie's housekeeper seemed like a real person.
Also: for this being her first published book (if I understand that correctly) it already has signs of her particular strengths, so kudos.

3.5 stars I enjoyed this one, the hero is a recluse ever since he was left with burns after a fire rescue gone bad. The heroine actually runs into him, injured and needs tending. She of course has some sort of amnesia. This one was a typical category but I liked it. When the heroine found out who she was she didn't feel she deserved the hero while he wouldn't let her push him away.
this one got an extra star for surprising me. was not expecting a lot. consistent characterization, good supporting cast, and didn't let the plot be overwhelmed by the amnesia trope. plot itself is probably two to three stars, but was okay. the subplot with the cousin pleased me because of how minor it was. recommend.
Seth Brogan is a recluse, hiding away on his mountain after an accident in fire-fighting and dealing with his guilt. He's surprised when Sophie turns up injured and unable to remember anything about her life. There's a definite attraction between them, but once Sophie remembers what she's done, she immediately starts pushing Seth away. But she's already tamed him, so Seth will follow her back to her home in Houston to help her face her demons, the men who want to kill her and her own fears about love. He doesn't know about the future, but he does know he can't let her go.
This was a nice take on the recluse and the woman who shows up on his solitude trope. For once, the hero wasn't viciously suspicious of the heroine or even angry at her intrusion. He was nurturing, yet hard-headed and gruff and while he wondered about what had happened and her role in it, he didn't accuse her of anything. He was also clearly smitten from the start, and that always endears me to a hero. Sophie was great until she regained her memory, then she sort of lost my support. I couldn't understand or connect to her fears and insecurities, and so their bickering and disagreements later as she pushed him away felt contrived. They'd had such a connection earlier, pre-memory return, and to see them lose it and never really re-establish it again was rather disappointing. Also, I wish the steam factor had continued a bit further into the story. This had an initial love scene (that was very brief) and then all the rest were just fade to black.

What on earth was Harlequin thinking? Badly scanned and badly edited. The number one for the letter I is a dead give away. The head-hopping and poor time transitions made the story harder to follow. I know I got the book for free, but this needed more from the publisher..
An older romance written by Eileen Wilks. Its much better than some of the more current romance stories I've read recently with decent character development and an intersesting story.
