From fourth-grade storyteller to captivating romance author, CATHERINE MICHAELS has always been a word whisperer.

Her passion for learning led her to a master's degree in special education at the University of Kansas, where she nurtured young minds in classrooms. Later, she traded chalkboards for boardrooms, guiding organizational development and communication for a tech firm in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, all while holding onto her dream of becoming a full-time author.

In 2013, that dream took flight. Catherine embraced the pen name CAT MICHAELS and started weaving heartwarming children's stories that celebrated resilience, friendship, and the power of imagination. Her dedication paid off: awards like the Purple Dragonfly and Children's Literary Classics Book Award, plus a silver medal from Readers' Favorite, solidified her place as a talented storyteller. Her chapter book, Sweet T and the Turtle Team, even won the Wind Dancer Films competition and almost landed on the big screen!

Then came 2020, a year that had the world swirling in uncertainty. But amidst the chaos, Catherine found her anchor in a new genre: adult fiction. Inspired by the sun-kissed North Carolina coast and the enduring power of love, she embarked on a new chapter, launching the "Gull Island" romance series.

Slated for release in summer 2024, Sand, Sea, and Second Chances, whisks readers away to a charming coastal town where hearts mend and love blooms. And it's just the first in Catherine's Gull Island adventure. With a connected novella already written and the second novel mapped out, she's weaving tales of small-town romance and love's enduring power, one page-turning chapter at a time.

When not lost in the world of her characters, you can find Catherine planting a whimsical fairy garden for neighborhood kids, capturing moments with her camera, planning of her next beach trip, or walking city greenways. She lives near Raleigh, North Carolina, with her family, her heart forever anchored to the power of stories and the magic they bring to life.

A sweet read. I think this book can work for a good reminisce on happy times for adults, as much as be a good read for the kids.

"Sweet T" is a young girl with two little sisters. It is winter and she wants nothing more than to get out of the house on her scooter. Add some "North Wind Magic" and you get a wonderful adventure of the imagination. I had a nice time thinking of my one childhood summers and using my imagination to go places. A great way to encourage kids to utilize that ability more. Let their imagination take flight. So when they are couped up this winter, read this together at bedtime, and let their imagination take them through their dreams!

Now part of the book does take a bittersweet turn, but is a part of life many children must face. The illness of a loved one. Sad at parts but has a happy "life's mysteries" twist at the end.

While this is not a favorite of mine, I see some good merit in this book. There are some good questions at the end for discussion if you so choose. My only negative to this is I don't see this as a repeat read. Maybe once. After that I don't see a kid wanting to read it again.

Sweet T and the North Wind tells the story of Tara, a ten year old girl who is feeling bored because of the cold weather keeping her trapped indoors. Impatient to use the new scooter that she got for her birthday, she goes to the basement to visit it. The scooter speaks to her while she is there, and teaches her the power of her memory and using her imagination. While the memories are mostly happy, she also explores her feelings surrounding having a grandmother who is suffering with dementia.

I would recommend this story for children ages 7+. This is a great story to encourage discussion about dealing with the feelings that arise when an elderly family member falls ill. It is also a great story for encouraging children to reflect and remember happy times, and to use their imaginations to keep themselves entertained.

Sweet T and the North Star is a gentle story about a girl who misses the way her grandmother used to be. Grandma has dementia and is in a nursing home. Tara (Sweet T) has a winter birthday and was given a scooter--which she can't ride because of the snow. Wanting very much to ride her scooter-- Tara is given a special gift--an hour where she can feel all of her best memories--like they are happening in the moment.

Through this gift, Tara realizes that she has some wonderful memories of her grandmother--pre-dementia and those memories are priceless and comforting to her. Since many children & adults have loved ones in similar conditions, this book would be a great resource to bring comfort for those sharing a similar trial in their life.

This book was adorable. The illustrations were beautiful and fit perfectly with the story.

Tara, also known as T (or Sweet T after her grandma’s favorite beverage), is getting cabin fever being cooped up in the house. It’s Thanksgiving and the North Wind has already frozen the lake. The old-timers in the village not only are issuing warnings, but they believe the North Wind brings with it something magical.

Sweet T decides that if she can’t ride her scooter outside, she’ll makeshift ride around in the basement. She makes a heartfelt wish, and goes on a journey back in time to her memories. They are good memories, and memories of when her grandma got sick.

The North Wind does indeed bring some magic to town, and at the end of the day Tara’s day she receives some wonderful news.

I commend this book for broaching some of the touchy subjects that we sometimes try to avoid discussing in our culture. The subjects are brought into the story gently and are quite subtle. T describes things in language that kids can understand and would use. It is a great book for approaching this subject with children.

I really like this story, Great chapter book for kids just starting to read chapter books, and it has simple pictures as well. It is a great story, with a bike that comes alive and makes Tara use her imagination to go on a magical journey. This part of the book I loved, and for a fun read it is great. However if you are looking for a nice bed time story or a up lifting read this may or may not be it, there is some about her grandma that is in a home and she is dealing with that, and it is to me sad. I feel like this would be a amazing book for parents that are trying to teach there young kids about a family member that has a illness or something causing memory problems and health issues, My issue is if you are not aware of this part of the book and do have those things in your life it could cause sadness at a time you don't want or talking about it when you don't want to, yes it is a part of life, but I like to keep That kind of talk for when I am ready for it. I loved the story overall, I just wish it was more one way or the other. That is of course how I feel about this topic, If this does not bother you then the book is a great read and has a great story with great imagination.

Sweet T and the North Wind is a beautifully written and illustrated story about a little girl who experiences the wonderful enchantment of the North Wind.

It's winter and Sweet T (Tara) and her sisters are cooped up inside. That darn North Wind just keeps blowing and blowing. Longing to ride her new scooter, Sweet T pays it a visit in the basement and something magical happens.

Sweet T and the North Wind is a story to be cherished. After losing 3 of my grandparents in less than 3 years, I cling to the fond memories of special times spent with each of them. This story is a great reminder of just how important it is to remember the time we had with those we hold dear. Sweet T learns this lesson through magic, but later it is revealed that she has always had the ability and through the use her imagination she can bring fond memories to light.

The watercolor illustrations are simply amazing and work well to set the loving and gentle tone of the story.

Sweet T and the North Wind is certainly a story you won't want to miss. I high recommend picking up a copy.

This book starts with the inscription that wonderful things are possible when you use your imagination. Not only do I personally find this to be true, but a great focus for the story. Imagination and magic can make for an amazing adventure... and book.

Stuck inside on a cold wintery day, Tara busies herself with her scooter. With a little magic from the north wind, she's gifted with the power to boost her imagination. Tara takes advantage to remember the good times, and create new memories with those she loves. This is a touching story that not only teaches us a lesson about imagination, but the connections of family.

Sweet T and the North Wind is a sweet, fun, and slightly sentimental story. It's the simple tale of a girl and a scooter, with enough magic to delight children, and some very nice watercolor drawings thrown in. But it also has a sad side--as T must come to terms with the sickness of her loving grandmother.

This short, easy to read book reminds me very much of books I read when I was a kid. It's the kind of quick book that could be read as a bedtime story by adults, or read by kids themselves. The watercolor drawings add a touch of nostalgia to the story as well.

Sweet T and the North Wind is a book that teaches imaginative play. Being from the south, I loved the nickname Sweet T, but not as much as I enjoyed the story itself. Was T imagining while she rode, or was she really transported to the destinations she thought about? Cute book for younger children.

Wonderful things are possible when you dream big and use your imagination.

"When the North Wind blows cold across Kelly Lake, and a rider circles five times and makes a dearest wish that is close to the heart, it unlocks magic. That is why I can come into your world and grant you a special gift of memories for one hour.”

With this words Cat Michaels introduce us to the story. Tara can't wait to use her new scooter! She has a winter birthday, so she's got to wait until the cold and snow go away before she can use it. The North Wind is blowing and there is magic in the air. So when Tara goes down to visit her scooter, magical things happen. She begins to remember things from the past back when her grandma was not suffering from dementia. Her grandma would call her her Sweet T after her favorite beverage.

This is a story about how kids can and should use their imagination. About how to using it to remember days gone by and by this to entertain themselves. The North Wind brings magic to 10 year old Tara's scooter and her scooter helps her to remember things she had thought she had forgotten. Specifically those things she remembers about her grandma., like how her grandma would call her her Sweet T after her favorite beverage, or the black, pitted olives … the ones Jenna loved to slip onto her small fingertips, pretending she was an olive monster, so the cousins could nibble those black treats from her hand.

Sweet T's grandma has an Alzheimer disease that causes her not to remember the people around her or to remember them incorrectly. She's in a special home where they take care of her illness. Sweet T's grandpa and parents are sad about this and so is she.

The book is a beautiful way to help children better understand what is Alzheimer disease . And even things are sad right now it use to be different before... there had been love laugh and warm relationships. (http://sarityahalomi.blogspot.com/)

Sweet T and the North Wind is a thought provoking, , imaginative, well written story, it has a life of it's own, colorful pictures on each page, a magical mysterious event takes place, it is a good one. Girls and boys alike will enjoy this story.
Tara is a 10 year old girl named Sweet T. by her grandmother because it's her favorite drink and granddaughter. Tara has 2 sisters Kristen and Jenna and they live in a warm house on the shores of Kelly Lake. Tara and her middle sister Kristen are looking like penguins in the cold snap as they are waiting for the bus and the North wind has not stopped blowing for a week! Tara's mind is elsewhere on her brand new red scooter which she will not be able to ride until Spring, but maybe the North Wind will blow in some magic like the old-timers say if the lake freezes before Thanksgiving and the North Wind blows! Tara goes down to the basement before supper and spends a very memorable and life changing hour. Her sisters Kristen and Jenna wonder what she has been doing for an hour in the basement with her scooter. Tara has a magical life changing hour with her brand new scooter but it only happens for an hour but the memory lasts a lifetime for Sweet T.
The story contains a beautiful piece of information that children with old grandparents who are sick will find helpful but ALL children will love this story about a mystery and a new insight.
Contains extras at the end Mind Ticklers, the answers can be found in the book.
Brain Busters which helps them relate and think about the story and they can talk to friends about things in the book which is very good for them to talk about.

4 Stars out of 5, I enjoyed the story a great deal.

Well that was unexpected :) But in a VERY good way. Tara or Sweet T as her grandmother with Alzheimers calls her, wants so badly to ride her scooter but it is so cold and she can't ride outside in the cold weather. So she rides around the basement for a while until she starts to get itchy to go outside and suddenly she starts to hear someone talking to her telling her not to do that. She thinks it is her sister teasing her, but it turns out that the scooter is talking to her, and the scooter has magical powers from the North Wind that will allow her to use her memories and experiences to PRETEND that she is outside. Since her grandma went into a nursing home it has been hard on all of them, so Tara goes back to times before that were good and everyone was happy. Her journey through memories and thoughts are very descriptive and when young children read this they will learn to use their imagination in ways they didn't know they could. And also learn that imagination can take them to places they never dreamed! The illustrations in the book are simply amazing - they are watercolor but they are made to look like they have ran a little bit, like our memories fade if we don't use them :) At the end of the book there are brain teasers and questions about the book for kids to answer. I really loved this book, can't wait to read the others :)

I can't wait to introduce you to Sweet T and her family!

This tale is the first of my Sweet T Tales about the adventures of three sisters. In this stand-alone story, readers meet Tara, or Sweet T as Grandma calls her. They learn what happens to T one cold winter day as the North Wind blows sharp across the lakes.

Readers of my second book, Finding Fuzzy: a You-Decide Tale of a Lost Friend, will recognize T's sisters, Jenna and Kristen, who also take part in the story. But T has center stage in this one!

I added enough magic and whimsy to keep children turning the pages. And Irene A. Jahn's watercolors break up the text and help bring the stories to life for young readers.

I also incorporated bits of my own family's experience about dealing with the issues of aging. And so T must come to terms with the illness of a beloved family member. However, the story is gentle, light and uplifting. I added a fun quiz and thought questions at the back of the book, the latter to open discussions as appropriate, about the issue with aging and its impact on children.

I first published Sweet in print format in 2013. In November 2014, she'll be sailing into cyberspace as an e-reader for Kindles.

To learn more about Sweet T, please check out my Character Tour blog post on my Goodreads author site or on my website @ http://goo.gl/ZGgK1k.

Thanks for stopping by. All the best and happy tales!

Sweet T is the nickname given to ten year old Tara by her grandmother. Tara has recently celebrated her birthday and has been gifted with a new scooter by her parents. But the North Wind is howling over Kelly Lake; her parents tell Tara that she will have to wait till spring to ride it.

Tara and her two younger sisters are part of a close-knit family. Her grandmother suffers from dementia; and her grandfather has recently moved into the nursing home with her. Tara is experiencing “cabin fever” so she goes down to the basement to look at her scooter. All of a sudden the scooter begins talking with her. The scooter informs her that she has one hour to use her imagination to go outside on a spring day and enjoy her scooter. At first this seems impossible, but soon Tara is whizzing down hills with her sisters on the scooter. Then she goes back in time to imagine a better time with her grandparents in their house on Harriet Lane. A surprise ending makes the reader ask, “What if….?”

This story combines fantasy, whimsy and imagination to tough real life situations like a family dealing with Alzheimer’s disease. The author faces the challenges without belaboring the point. Short chapters and charming watercolors make the book a perfect beginning chapter reader for children in elementary grades. Look forward reading the other books in this series.

This is a great story about how kids can and should use their imagination. There are points in the story that are sad and might give you a topic to talk to your children about that you may or may not want to avoid. Sweet T (Tara) uses her imagination to remember days gone by and the entertain herself on a cold windy day. The North Wind brings magic to her scooter and her scooter helps her to remember things she had thought she had forgotten. Specifically she remembers things about her grandma. Now the idea of using her imagination and entertaining herself is a fantastic concept to try to help teach our kids, but the memories about Sweet T's grandma are a little rough. I don't mean that in a bad way. Sweet T's grandma has a disease that causes her not to remember the people around her or to remember them incorrectly. She's in a special home where they take care of her illness. Sweet T's grandpa and parents are sad about this and so is she. This is what you might not want to have to talk to you kids about. On the other hand, if you have a family member with Alzheimer's or something similar, this might be a great book for you to help you kids understand what that means and how to think about the good times instead.

The icy cold North wind can be magical and friendly too! In this story book the North Wind uses its magic and spins a tale of imagination and hope for little Tara.

The little girl Tara is trying to make the best of a cold winter day with nothing to do. The author has handled a lot of sensitive issues, old age, sickness, helping family and taking care of each other.

She also highlights the importance of listening to parents and elders. I enjoyed the story book as it allows the reader to understand the scope for life and growing up.

Tara as Sweet T is called not only spends a magical hour with her new scooter but learns that Imagination is the most important of our senses, transporting us to a beautiful world.

I found it to be a good for story engaging and teaching children. I only wish the story book had more pretty illustrations like the cover page. The ones in the book are a bit blurry and the children lose interest in the pictures.

Overall a very informative book, teaching and guiding little children and making it easy for kids to know about aging, changes and life.

This is a story about a young child who received a bike for a present. Anxiously wanting to ride her bike, but the weather isn't permitting this. Deciding to go look at her bike she goes down in the basement where she longingly admires her it. All of a sudden the bike comes to life and starts talking to her. The bike tells Sweet T that when North Wind is upon them this is the one day that it can speak. The bike tells Sweet T she can ride her bike using her imagination and memories. So Sweet T goes on a journey with her new bike. She has some good adventures and some bad . When the time comes Sweet T must stop riding and visiting her bike. She then goes to tell her family what a great time she had with her bike and her grandma.
The story is a great telling of a child using their imagination as well as reflecting on good and bad memories. It does contain some sadness when Sweet T's grandma is introduced since she must put in a hospital. All in all a great read for a child age ranging from 5-9 the illustrations are nice and spot on.

The North Wind is blowing, making it the coldest morning Tara, known as Sweet T to her family, can remember. All she wants to do is ride the red scooter she got for her birthday last week. But when she goes down to the basement to "visit" it, Sweet T finds more than just a scooter; she finds a bit of magic.

This short chapter book tells a simple tale of the power of imagination. As Sweet T learns, "Wonderful things are possible when you dream big and use your imagination!" The watercolor illustrations by Irene A. Jahns add a lovely touch to the story. It is followed by a quiz to test your children's comprehension of the story, as well as a couple of discussion questions to help you start a conversation with them about aging or ill relatives.

Especially recommended for children with a grandparent suffering from dementia.

I think it is safe to say that we have all been in situations where the weather has held us back from doing something that we really wanted to do. Such is the case for Sweet T in this charming chapter book for the early reader. I really struggled a bit with trying to figure which age group I would truly recommend this book to. It wouldn’t be a read that my 10 year old son would pick up, however neither would it be one that a 5 year old could read. It’s somewhat of a chapter book that would be great as a read aloud between a parent and child. There a lot of details in the story that I believe could’ve been captured more by the illustrations.

With all that said the showcase of this read is the storyline. Sweet T has a scooter that she can’t wait to ride, however the time isn’t right just yet. The story immediately turns to Sweet T’s imagination and the journey that she takes. Along the way there are some very soft moments that Sweet T deals with. Topics, that aren’t always captured in a children’s chapter book. Overall, a touching story worth reading.

Sweet T and the North Wind is such a sweet story about family and love.

I really liked this sweet story. It is a good story to share with children who may have grandparents or great-grandparents who are going through this same thing. Even though they may not remember them now, children will always have the memories of before.

Sweet T and the North Wind, is a simple tale of the hidden magic imagination offers to those willing to follow. The cold winter's weather has taken Tara hostage, keeping her housebound and away from riding her new shiny scooter. Both confined to boredom, they still manage to find adventure in the warmth and love of memories. Sweet T, as Tara is fondly called, learns the limitless wonder quiet moments can offer, as she lets imagination whisk to sunny days and happy thoughts.
The author has added additional interaction in the back of the book to reinforce the story. As a storyteller, I appreciated this. The storytime circle always included an active engagement with their memory. I always found it refreshing to see the depths and directions one story can take.

Sweet T and the North Wind would be a great tool for children who are dealing with the illness of a loved one. Sweet T is a little girl who has a grandmother with dementia. The book discusses the sadness of the family, especially the grandfather, but also focuses on the glimpses of happiness that are still to be found and treasured. The magical element to the story is intriguing for young ones and gives children a focus that is not centered around the illness, but on the wonderful times had before the illness started. The message here is that using your imagination to relive the past can make memories feel more alive, something that is vital for children who have a loved one with deteriorating health.

Sweet T and the North Wind is a heartwarming tale with a dash of magic. With it's wonderful watercolor illustrations & captivating details, I felt as if time froze while I was transported into Sweet T's world.

I would highly recommend this book to those whose children's grandparent(s) are experiencing dementia. This seems like a beautiful way to help children better understand what their grandparents are experiencing & why they may not seem themselves...

This tale also touches on the power and wonder of your imagination. As well as, the blessing of your memories.

Sweet T and the North Wind is a heartwarming story that flows (and ends) quite the unexpected way. While it does encourage children to use fantasy and imagination, real-life situations are also being tackled. Parents may have to prepare themselves to answer tough questions.

I love how it focuses on the special relationship between grandparents and grandkids (although I could not relate to it personally but my daughter surely can) and how the story ended to highlight just that. The watercolor images, although sparse, are also a great addition to the book and portrays the right scenes at just the right moments.

Recommended for middle graders.

I loved this gentle tale of Sweet T, the North Wind, and T's special hour with her magical scooter! Author Cat Michael's story wrapped around me like a warm, cozy blanket of love! Reading it felt like time slowed down, just for a tiny bit - like there was space between breaths. If you and your kids need a break from the hectic pace of life, Sweet T and the North Wind will give you that break and stoke your imaginations. I was impressed how Cat Michaels addressed the issue of grandparents with dementia. In a very endearing, gentle way, she gives the reader, and grandchildren, hope of recognition, at the end of the story. I loved this story and send kudos to the author!

I really enjoyed the story. I would have gladly read this to my daughter when she was a child if it had been available. The story is written so a child knows it is okay to let your imagination run free. The story about the grandmother was a little sad but it also would open up a conversation with your child on what can happen to some grandparents as they grow older.
The story was written in such a vivid way that you could feel yourself in the story and feel what was happening.
I absolutely loved the quiz at the end so you are able to know if the child was paying attention to the story.
Can't wait to get a copy for my granddaughter when it becomes available.

A virtual hug!

Tightly written, and easy to read, Sweet T and the North Wind brings me right back to my childhood! Main character Tara is well developed, coming alive on the pages of this wonderful story. Tara interacts with her family in a believable and age appropriate way, reminding the reader that even though sad things can happen in life, there is always a silver lining when ones imagination is used!
I would highly recommend this lovely book for ages 8+, as well as younger readers who might be living the realities of a chronically or terminally ill loved one, and have an older reader to help them with more advanced words. Excellent!

Sweet T and the North Wind is a short, cute book about a 10 year old girl, Tara, whose scooter becomes magical when the North Wind blows across Kelly Lake. It teaches her how to use her imagination and her afternoon becomes a memorable one rather than a boring one.

This book uses Tara and the scooter to explain how to use your imagination. It also has a few multiple choice questions at the end as well as questions just to make children think. It's a good tool for parents and teachers to help children to use their imaginations which is important in this digital age.
