I was born and raised in Northcentral Kansas. I'm a farmer's daughter, but I now make my home in the city of Wichita. I'm an RN. Neonatal nursing has been the main focus of my career. What can I say? I love babies. I was invited to the highschool graduation of a baby I took care of. Talk about making me feel old!

In June of 2011 I became a widow after my husband of 36 years and 11 months died from multiple brain tumors. It was a very sad time, but thanks to the three f's, my faith, my family and my friends, life is moving forward. I have four brothers, one daughter and two grandchildren who all work at making me feel loved.

I'm the author of more than 30 books and I'm currently writing a series called The Brides of Amish Country for Love Inspired.

Very sweet Amish romance. It's nice to read about such kind-hearted and caring characters. Lizzie, who was so strong and courageous trying to help her sisters out of a bad situation. Carl, who was very mysterious about his shunning from the Amish community, but he still held on strongly to his faith and was always looking out for others. And the members of the Amish community of Hope Springs who were always ready to lend a helping hand when one was needed. It was interesting learning about sheep farming, as well. A quick and enjoyable read.

My Review: The Shepherd's Bride by Patricia Davids

4 STARS

I really liked the character Lizzie. She risked so much for her sisters. To keep them safe and happy. She was a hard worker. Has
faith in what she believes in. Willing to give up her only possession of her mother's. To take the chance she had for her sister's freedom.

Carl King is to be admired. He failed to live up to his beliefs once and paid a high price. In the process he saved a young girl's life. Personally either way he went could have been the right choice. I liked the choice he made. Carl has been shunned from the Amish faith. He still believes and mostly keeps to their ways.

The setting takes place on a Amish sheep farm. It made the sheep seem so real to me. Makes me want to go and watch the fields of the lambs playing. Maybe I will in a couple of months.

I liked the Amish community that welcomed Lizzie and were willing to offer jobs to her sisters before they met them to help.

This is a clean read. It is not afraid to mention prayer, beliefs and forgiveness.

I want to know what happens next to Lizzie's three sisters. I look forward to reading more books by Patricia Davids.

I was given this ebook to read and in return asked to give honest review of it by Netgalley and Harlequin.

I'm a sucker for Amish romance! I love Patricia Davids' Brides Of Amish Country Series. She really brings real life to her stories. In this case the hero, Carl is under the Bann for a secret he won't share with the community. Its a pretty big secret too.

Lizzie is trying to save herself and her sister's from her nasty uncle and a bad marriage to an abusive man for her sister Carla. So she takes her savings and gets on a bus in search of her grandfather.

I liked that nothing was really easy for her, when it came to trying to bring her sisters to Hope Springs. You get to see how hardworking, loyal and loving Lizzie is and how strong and devoted Carl is. Lizzie proves her mettle when working with the sheep.

There's a lot of conflict between Lizzie and both her grandfather and Carl, but as things progress they smooth out more than a bit. It takes a coydog to really bring the two of them together and get his secret out in the open.

I loved Lizzie's granddad, who can only be described as an old codger. His nickname is Wooley Joe. He's a lot softer than he lets on. He's been through much in his life and lost his daughter, so it gives him some rights at being curmudgeonly.

This is a great read for lovers of Amish fiction and romance.

I'll admit, I wasn't expecting much from this book. I thought it was going to be cheesy, sloppily-written romance...but that's what I get for judging a book by its cover. I was soon proven wrong. This book is excellent - sweet, simple, and satisfying. The characters were complex and lovable, the plot was engaging and well-paced. Lizzie's quest to save Clara and the rest of her sisters from an arranged marriage and the tyrannical rule of their uncle was something I could get behind. That, and her forbidden love for Carl, an ex-Amish shepherd with a tortured past, had me completely hooked. The book was a little over 200 pages, which is short compared to what I normally read. Still, the story didn't feel crammed. It was a quick, but smooth, read - conveniently not too short and not too long. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a heart-warming, interesting, clean Christian romance to devour in one afternoon. All in all, The Shepherd's Bride definitely exceeded my expectations.
I received this book free through Goodreads First Reads in exchange for an honest review.

Lizzie is desperate to keep her sister from marrying a mean old man. In order to do this she sets out for her grandfathers house. The Grandfather she has had no contact with since she was a kid. At first he does not want her there and tells her to go back home. But the love for her sisters gives her the courage to stay and find a way to help them. She befriends a man who is working for her grandfather. He seems English at first but Lizzie soon realized Carl has an Amish background and worse yet he is under the Bann. Can she look past the rules and get to know him and maybe find away to save her sisters as well?

I really enjoyed this book. This is the third book in this series that I have read and I’m hoping there will be more to come.

What I liked: Lizzie loved her sisters and wanted to get them out of the bad situation they where in. She risked everything to got to her Grandfather for help. I really liked her and the courage she showed and her resilience in dealing with her grandfather. I also liked Carl. He had a bad situation that left him broken and he had to learn to rely on God and trust him again. I thought it was a great story. One anyone can relate to one way or another.

What I did not like: The only thing I did not like was how mean Lizzie’s Uncle was and how her Grandfather did not want to help at first. The story worked itself out but her uncle really rubbed me the wrong way.

This was a great book. I really enjoy this author and think she does a great job writing a well rounded and enjoyable plot. The characters were very likable for the most part. If you enjoy Amish Fiction you will love this book. I recommend going back and reading all her books in this series. I have only read three but hope to read the rest at some point. The books are easily stand alone but there are mentions of some of the past characters.

This Amish tale is inspirational fiction but without the preaching, more emphasis is on the practicalities of helping one another in the community.

The start reminded me of the sisters in 'Fiddler On The Roof' as four sisters on an Indiana farm worry over who they will marry. The Amish don't go for arranged marriages but respect for their elders means that they should obey the uncle who houses them in this Plain community. After all, maybe he is right and a stern widower thirty years older, who happens to be their uncle's landlord, would make a good husband for the eldest girl, Clara Barkman.

Second sister Lizzie is determined to travel to Hope Springs and seek her grandfather. He may have fallen out with their late parents, but maybe he could give them a home while they seek work and husbands. Arriving alone at her sheep-farming grandfather's house in Ohio she can see that there is plenty of work to be done in this home without a woman. Carl King the shepherd is first to meet her, and he doubts that elderly, gruff Joseph Shetler will be pleased with her arrival.

Sure enough Carl is asked to drive Lizzie back in the trap to the bus, only for Lizzie to discover that Carl has been shunned by those of their faith. Why would Joseph put her in this awkward position? And what could Carl possibly have done to merit shunning?

I was amused by the way that people easily get around restrictions to do with dealing with a shunned person. The two men eat together but technically at different tables, though covered by the same tablecloth. I particularly enjoyed the alpaca shearing scene while the later sheep shearing seems like harder work. Overall it's a pleasant read and I look forward to more of the Brides of Amish County series.

This is one of the Brides of Amish Country Series. I so enjoy Patricia's books, I'm sure you do too, so I was excited to get this book. The story is well written, humorous, and heart warming. A story about abuse and its hopelessness in the Amish World. Abuse is always close to my heart as a survivor myself. You need to get a copy of this book.
Carl King is shunned by the Amish community that he had grown up in. He has committed an unforgivable sin. With a broken heart he runs a way from his community. He is found by a shepherd that fed and cared for him and a little puppy that he had found. Years later now Carl works for the shepherd and has kept the laws of the Amish and kept to himself so that no one is compromised because of his bann. Carl lives each day begging God to forgive him.
Elizabeth Barkman and her three sisters live with their uncle and work for him. The man is lazy and abusive. They must do as he tells them or suffer the consequences. Lizzy is shocked to learn that her sister Clara is going to be forced to marry her uncle's boss. This old man is cruel and has already buried two wives. Clara is sweet and her spirit will be destroyed. Lizzie runs a way to their grandfather to find help for her sister. But grandfather refuses to help.
A journey of two broken hearts that cry out to each other. Aware of the bann that stands between them they struggle to please God and stay apart. God has a plan for these two and it's much greater than they could have imagined. God has a plan for you too. Unlike the Amish doctrine that believes God is always in control; you must accept Him and give Him control. Not always an easy thing but He will turn your life around. His plan is greater than you could possibly dream.

It's been a while since I read the previous book in this series, so I appreciated the little 'reintroductions' that took place when Lizzie would meet someone new in Hope Springs. Though, because these books can be read as stand-alone novels (or in whichever order you choose to read the series), I didn't really NEED them to understand what was going on.
Lizzie represents my favourite type of Amish character. She is very devoted to God, and to her religion, but at the same time, she's not afraid of doing what's right, even if it is not what's expected. I loved how she worked so hard to figure out a way to help her sisters.
Carl's been somewhat of a mystery for a few books now, and it was cool to figure out what was going on with him. My heart broke for the circumstances which placed him under the Bann, and I couldn't quite understand why he didn't seek forgiveness earlier, though, obviously I'm coming at this from the viewpoint of an Englischer, rather than an Amish person. Still, it was interesting to see how Carl desperately WANTED to believe that God would/had forgive him, and how his heart had never left the Gmay (community).

Lizzie flees in the middle of the night in an attempt to save her sisters from abusive uncle and her oldest sister from a marriage to a monster, her only hope is a grandfather named Joseph, she doesn't even remember him much. When she arrives in Hope Springs, she meets Carl King, her grandfather's handy-man and then her gruff grandfather, who immediately tells Carl to take her to the bus station and send her home.
Lizzie misses the bus, getting a short reprieve of 4 days and she makes the most of it, by cleaning, cooking and even helping to shear sheep. She also looks for a job, one that would allow her the money to send for her sisters...
Carl King has a secret, he's under the bann, but the reason why is even a mystery to the grandfather Joe.
Can Lizzie break down the walls Carl has spend nearly a lifetime putting up? Can she save her sisters?
One thing I love about Lizzie, while her feelings for Carl grow, she never once loses sight of her main goal of getting her sisters to safety.

Lizzie Barkman is full of spunk, faith and lots of love for her 3 sisters. The sisters live on a farm in Indiana with their Uncle Morris. He decides that Clara, Lizzie's sister, should marry a much older man Rufus, who owns the farm on which they live. Devising a plan to help Clara, Lizzie sneaks away on a bus to her Grandfather Joe's farm in Ohio. Lizzie meets Carl King who is helping her grandfather on his sheep farm. His constant companion is his dog Duncan. Little does Lizzie know that Carl has a secret that has caused him to be shunned from his Amish faith and family. Lizzie has strength and determination to win her grandfathers love, find a job and be reunited with her sisters. This book has many details about life on a sheep farm and all the work involved which I found really interesting. The story has a sweet ending and shows how much people are willing to sacrifice for faith, family and love.

Wonderful!! "The Shepherd's Bride" is filled with plenty of drama, faith, family, and love! It was a blast to learn so much about sheep, Llamas and Alpaca's. Did not know they required so much attention but the Shepherd Carl, did a fantastic job! I love Happy Endings and this one was tops! Loved and enjoyed every word! It is one of those books that is so hard to put down!! I highly recommend this novel, as well as any others in this series, "Brides of Amish Country", to all Amish book lovers!

This was another sweet read from Love Inspired. Patricia Davids has done a wonderful job with this Brides of Amish Country Series. The writing is clean and easily understood with bits of humor hear and there which I could use more of in most of my books. Carl and Lizzie's story is one to read. I really enjoyed the parts with Joe and Naomi; I wouldn't have minded more of them.

The Shepard's Bride is the 10th book written by Patricia Davids in her Brides of Amish Country series. This story is absolutely remarkable. I enjoyed the storyline very much.

The characters are very likeable and realistic and they are all great together. There is a very strongwilled young Amish lady, Lizzie, who will do almost anything to protect her three sisters. When Lizzie shows up on her cantankerous grandfather's doorstep she prays for a heartwarming welcome but she receives anything but that. The journey Lizzie takes to help her sisters escape from their abusive uncle is one you won't want to miss. Everything that can go wrong does. Lizzie, however, refuses to give up. When Lizzie earns the respect of a secretive Amish man will she convince him to help her?

I was not given a complimentary copy of this fantastic story to read and review. I was not approached by anyone to post a favorable review. I have rated this book with five stars for meeting my expectations of a wonderful story that I can highly recommend to others.

Congratulations to Patricia Davids for writing another amazing story for her readers to enjoy and I look forward to reading the next fantastic episode of this series.

After two hideous 'suspense' novels from my 'Love, Inspired' cache, I reached for an Amish book to make it all better. I love this series, but this was the one I was missing from my collection - and Elohim put it in a free library at our campground, end of the season, so... yay!!

This is an amazing story. It's about an Amish guy whose sister is a Mennonite missionary in Africa. He goes to visit, gets caught in a guerilla attack on the village, and takes up a gun to save the life of a young village girl... and kills a man. The Amish are absolutely non-violent, and so he sees himself as a murderer and unworthy of being Amish or forgiven by God... so he basically shuns himself, leaves home, and hides in a shepherd's hut, tending sheep for a crotchety old Amish man.

Until the old man's granddaughters - who live out of state with an abusive uncle - desperately need a place to escape to. Then everything changes.

Definitely a keeper - this is well written, the characterizations are wonderful (even though I winced when Joy showed up. Thank the LORD *that* was short-lived). But it was a nice visit to Hope Springs that made my day brighter.

I enjoyed learning all about the myriad details of raising sheep in Caleb and Lizzie’s story and empathized with Lizzie’s brave plan to rescue her sisters from her cruel uncle’s household before her sister was forced to marry a loathsome Amish man. Lizzie’s bravery and her love for the sheep illustrates what a wonderful woman she is and her empathy for Carl’s plight is endearing. I was very disappointed with the cruelty Carl exhibits when he shuns every attempt at forgiveness from his family including burning their letters without reading them. Yes, he eventually welcomes them back into his life but denying them any communication from him for four years because of his own actions didn’t sit well with me.

This book in the series is a great read and a wonderful reminder that He always is with us and forgives us, when we ask. Some days, we all punish ourselves and forget to rejoice in the daily good. Readers will love to meet the family and root for everyone's happiness.

I’ve never read a book set in an Amish community that I didn’t enjoy. This one was a bit different, and had some things in it that you don’t usually read in this type of book, but it was a very good story and I really enjoyed it.
