Chris Raschka is the illustrator of The Hello, Goodbye Window, which was awarded the Caldecott Medal. He is also the illustrator of the Caldecott Honor Book Yo! Yes?; Charlie Parker Played Be Bop; Mysterious Thelonious; John Coltrane’s Giant Steps; Can’t Sleep; and The Magic Flute. He lives with his wife and son in New York City.
This little 6 1/2 x 6 1/2 inch book is perfect for sharing with 0 - 3 year olds.
Clammy Clam behaves just like baby does when making a call to grandparents to show off saying a word. The humor is not lost on the adult and the baby gets to see the same illustration with various inflections of the same text on each page. Very fun.
The format is small for use in a group setting. Consider making flannel elements.
Clammy Clam is so shy we never even hear a simple "Hello!"
This is among the very simplest of the Thingy Things books. It makes it point of representing what it looks and feels like to be shy, but I'm not sure how to read the last page. It feels a little judgmental.
