Even though Thea Berg was born to “human” parents, she always knew she was part of the magical world. Having grown up in a small town without much to do, her imagination ran wild, and tales of bewitching adventures filling her head. Thea currently lives in the enchanted land of Los Angeles, CA. The Magical World of Sebella is her first children’s book.
(Morgan age 11) This book is a great book to read it is full of adventure, magic and ghost. It is a bigger book than I normally read. I got it done pretty fast. My neighbor got this in a giveaway and I thought it was interesting the more I read the story the more I wanted to be part of the book. I wish Sebella was my best friend.
Every child loves a story filled with magic and adventure. The Magical World of Sebella has it all, from witches, ghosts and dragons. Thea Berg has created a world that will lead to many more wonderful stories.
This book is the author’s first short novel. The plot moves along quickly with well developed characters and lots of twists and turns. Vocabulary in the book is not too difficult allowing most beginning chapter readers to access it without too much difficulty. The author provides a comprehensive list of questions which may be used as a guide to developing a discussion and comprehension of the tale. Sebella is a nine year old witch who is part of a “unique” family living in Skullvilla. On this particular rainy day, she is bored so she begs her mother to allow her to see who has just moved across the street. Her mother does not want to go out and get her hair wet, but Sebella manages to use her powers to suddenly end the rain and clear things up quickly. The neighbor turns out to be the witch Eloise, a former friend of her mother.
Sebella, the new neighbor’s daughter, Kendall, Sebella’s cousin, Prudence, and Sebella’s, brother, Drac are now playing a board game in the living room. Suddenly, Prudence drops a gargoyle statue and its red laser eyes bore a deep crack in the fireplace wall. So the adventure begins! The children crawl into the tunnel which opens to a castle. Dimitrius, the Lord of the Castle, informs them they must get rid of the Shadows, slay the dragons and eliminate the Villainous Mentalist (who used to own Sebella’s house). Certainly a tall order! Though it seems an insurmountable task, the children are ready and willing to attempt it. Their journey forces them to explore many rooms of the castle. Turns out they receive some unexpected help along the way. Will they succeed in all three tasks and find a way to escape and find their way home? If they are successful, will their lives be changed forever?
A delightful and exciting read for tweens and teens and/or adults. Looking forward to reading more adventures from this new and talented author.
My mother won this book through the first reads giveaway contest, and after she finished, she let me read it. I really liked the book, to be perfectly honest. In my mother's review of the book, she said that, even though it was a children's book, it didn't use patronizing language or "dumb down" things for the child reader, and she is absolutely right. I hate it when author's write children's books and use silly language because they believe a child incapable of understanding normal speech. It's insulting. This book doesn't do that.
When I get a new kid's book -- or in this case, when my mother gets it -- I always read it first before I give it to my son to read, just to make sure there is no objectionable content (because these days, you really can't be sure), and this book is a book that I am going to be very happy to let my son read. I'd like to go on more adventures with Sebella and Co. :-D
My seven year old really enjoyed reading this book. The day it arrived, she read nonstop until it was finished. For the first couple of weeks, she would not part with it long enough for me to read it!
Filled with humor, The Magical World of Sebella is a perfect selection for children who've just started reading chapter books. At 83 pages, the story is fast paced and adventure filled. If your primary grade child isn't reading chapter books yet, they'll enjoy this as a read aloud.
There's a few twists along the way {and in the end} to keep the story fresh. My daughter LOVED it and has reread the book several times.
Highly recommended for children who find Level Readers too easy and are transitioning to chapter books. It can be easily read in an afternoon.
I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway and am so glad I did! Thank you, Thea Berg, for such a fun read for my daughter and me :)
*I won this book through the First Reads Giveaway program*
This book was a very cute little children's book. I am a grown woman, of course, so a few of the "huge revelations" were easy to predict, but the book is made to be read by a child, and I don't think a child would figure out things before they actually happen. The characters are very lovable, and although it IS a children's book, it doesn't use patronizing language or "dumb down" things for the reader. It is very well written, and the magical world in which it is set is a lot of fun. I definitely recommend this book to others.
I admit, I'm not a common reader of children's/young adult books. However, this one stood out to me as interesting looking. It was really well done, and a good story, but I wonder if the story was meant to move so fast and cover so much ground. Maybe I'm just forgetting what it's like to read a book as a kid. I expected more drawing out of the story, perhaps covering half the adventures this one did. Pacing aside, it was well done, and I'd read it to my babysitting charges.
This book was pretty magical. Imagine having witch power and changing the weather if you don't want it to rain. Also, I like the big twist at the ende where Sebella, Drac, Kendall, and Prudence find out that the All-Powerful Maigician is Seblla's and Drac's father. Who would have known. Anyway, I really like the book and I truly am happy that I won this book on the Goodreads Giveaway Contest.
My almost 10 year old daughter loved this book. I won the book for her in a giveaway from goodreads and she is a "reluctant reader" but she read this one very quickly.
