K.H. Miller is the author of the J.D. Reiter Mysteries. Her lifelong love of mysteries and police investigation spawned her first published book, "Cold as a Wedge". The series centers around a perceptive, smart mouthed detective in the 1970's suburbs of Philadelphia. While Miller is a life long resident of Pennsylvania, her sojourns into Virginia have helped fuel her Civil War series, Lavender Lea, due out in late 2014. At times with nothing more than a tent in the trunk, her trusty black backpack and a bit of the old cold steel, she would whisk herself off to Virginia for adventure and research. She currently resides in Bucks County with her husband and young daughter.

Took a chance on this and I’m happy I did. This was a really great police procedural mystery, but the real star of the show was JD Reiter. Rough around the edges, I wasn’t sure I’d warm up to the brazen detective from the book’s start, but as the investigation went on, his one-liners had me bursting out laughing. The mystery starts straight away as we jump head-first into the investigation and it doesn’t slow down much thereafter. Don’t want to give much away, but I was pleasantly surprised at the ending (and hooked throughout the interrogations… ahem… I mean “interviews”).

Oh, and it’s set in the seventies, so it harkens back to a more “inventive” form of police investigation… which I LOVED.

Definitely worth my dollar! Hope more come out soon!

COLD AS A WEDGE is an engaging mystery with a commendable attention to detail. Centered around Detective JD Reiter and his investigation of a local homicide, COLD AS A WEDGE clearly illustrates the strategy and intricacies of police procedure without overwhelming you in descriptions. It's story and characters are intriguing. The author takes such care to ensure that the characters represent the attitudes and principles of small town America in the 1970's. JD is flawed and chauvinistic, but still likeable as a product of his time.

The close of COLD AS A WEDGE leaves unanswered questions about JD, so I anticipate more cases from Detective Reiter and look forward to continuing this series.
