Garrett, an apprentice necromancer, flees the tomb city of Wythr with the help of his friends, a ghoul who likes pies and the vampire girl he would follow anywhere. Can they find the lost necromancers and their army of the dead, rumored destroyed by the fanatical war priests of the Chadiri Empire? Garrett must face his greatest fears and escape the cleansing flames of the inquisition in the hope of forging a new alliance that might turn the tide of the war.
I like how the gory things happening around the main characters are considered normal day-to-day occurrences. The plot thickens, the mc goes through some experiences that make him grow a little, I like that.
The veil of mystery thrown on some of the races is lifted a bit and some of the other secondary characters get a little bit of backstory while new things about the world are revealed making it feel more real and making me wonder more about it. Again though, it has the same simple feeling to it, maybe with the growth of the mc will add some more complexity to the story, now that the glasses of naivety were taken of, at least in part.
As exciting as the first book, if not more! We learn more about the main characters, and discover some new life events about them. Building the characters life stories, even more. When i first started this series, I wasn't sure about it... now I find myself, craving the next book in line.
Enjoying the friendship between the three main characters and the dark / horrifying world they live in which seems so very normal to them (Eating human flesh? Yes, for breakfast. The corpses? Rezzed at lunch. The skeletts? Patroul the streets at night). I hope it stays this interesting. Al
