Ride with us back to "those thrilling days of yesteryear" but this time look deeper into the Old West the historians won't tell you about: the weird, haunted, eldritch, occult Old West of TEX ARCANA!
No one does weird west in graphic format like John Findley. From the pages of Heavy Metal magazine, Tex Arcana: A Saga of the Old West is now available in full online. The artwork is amazing, the story is as convoluted as you could possibly get, and the characters (especially my favorites, Herp and Sweaz) are multi-layered and full of meaningful motivations. Problem is, after being dosed on these since I was a teenager, I use this as the litmus test for all other weird west fiction, graphical or non. And I haven't found anything yet that quite measures up.
Engaging suspense with solid humor laced throughout... the DENSEST narrative I can think of! Jeeeeze it's a hearty read- The action all takes place in such a short amount of time that's populated with dozens of great characters. Very well written.
The art is fantastic and perfectly suited for the subject matter.
I'd fancy givin' this a solid re-view but I'm just plumb tuckered out from readin' this blamed doorstopper!
This is one of the seminal "Weird West" stories out there, and would be a wonderful source for a _Deadlands_ role-playing-game game master. The artwork is detailed and lush, the period details (as far as I could spot) correct, and the horror and humor are nicely mixed.
