The Legend of Ranger: The Reindeer Who Couldn't Fly

Rate this book
In "The Legend of Ranger," Alan Salisbury's words and Roberta Baird's whimsical artwork create the magic of the Christmas season with the tale of a young reindeer named Ranger who has a big dream--to be part of the reindeer team that pulls Santa's big sleigh. Ranger searches all over Santaland for someone who can teach him the secret of flying, but everyone he asks, including the oldest and wisest elves, Mrs. Claus, and even his brother Rudolph, gives him the same advice: "The secret lies within." Determined to fulfill his dream, Ranger must figure out the secret for himself. An emergency trip to Krystalwite to help the sick reindeer at the North Pole offers Ranger the opportunity to play a part in saving Christmas and, along the way, learn what it is that lies within. "The Legend of Ranger" contains a heartening and inspirational message about the power of believing in yourself no matter what challenges lie ahead.

Ranger, Rudolph's younger brother, watches the reindeer practice their Christmas Eve run. He wants desperately to pull Santa's sleigh on the BIG night. He finally reached the three year age mark recently, so he is now eligible to be on Santas Christmas Eve Reindeer Team. Unfortunately there is a small problem. Ranger can not fly. Ranger knows not all reindeer can fly, but his brother Rudolph can fly so he feels he should be able to fly as well. When he ask what the secret is all anyone will tell him is the secret to flying is within. He searches every building and asks everyone he can think of but to no avail.

Just as wonders where else he needs to look he learns there is another even bigger problem. The reindeer are getting sick and can not fly. The medicine they need is in a village far away and the hear caretaker of the reindeer send Ranger and an elf off to get it but they must hurry because they have only enough time to get to the village, return and treat the reindeer so that they will be well in time to fly Christmas Eve. If Ranger and Zarvett fail there will be no Christmas. The encounter problems along the way the keep delaying them. time is short and they must hurry if there is any hope for Christmas. Will they make in time to help the reindeer and save Christmas? Will Ranger ever learn the secret of how to fly?

This is a delightful story the shows reader that true strength comes from within. If they believe in themselves there is nothing outside of their reach. Raberta Baird's illustrations are beautiful and on target for the story. The young readers in my home loved the story and pictures. They found the reading level easy enough for them to be able to read the book for themselves.Enabling them to enjoy the book on their own or as a group for a bedtime story and believe this will be a book I will buying for them this Christmas. The Legend of Ranger will be loved by all your young readers as much as his older brother Rudolph's story.

A wonderful addition to your Christmas traditions, you will enjoy this story whether you are eight or eighty. All profits from the sales of this book and related Ranger products will be donated to the Antonia J Giallourakis Endowed Fund in Art Therapy for Children with Cancer at Massachusetts General Hospital.

The Legend of Ranger is the story of Ranger, Rudolph's brother. He wants to fly and be part of the Santa's Christmas Team, but he doesn't know how to. He looks everywhere for the secret of flying but can't find it until his help is needed to save Christmas and he decides he is going to prove he's a good reindeer.

I loved Ranger, he was sweet and cute, worked hard and never gave up. He is an inspiration for anyone to never give up and believe in yourself! The illustrations were pretty (although I read it on my b&w kindle), the elves and reindeer looked so cute. It's a 50 pages book with chapter and a few pictures, great for kids who are starting to read chapter books, and also perfect to be read as a bed time story for Christmas!

ARC provided by NetGalley:
Cute little beginning chapter book about Ranger the Reindeer, Rudolph's brother who can't fly. Ranger desperately wants to be part of Santa's Christmas Eve delivery team but he's unable to. He works to prove to Santa and the other reindeer that he's worthy of their trust. Good little story, short enough for those kiddos just beginning to read chapter books.
