Aphrodite despises Ares and when Zeus proposes a contest, the prize being the expulsion of her enemy from Olympus, Aphrodite cannot resist. The should Ares prevail, it is Aphrodite who must leave. Risks aside, she cannot refuse the possibility of a future without her former lover. The two mortals must fall in love. It is simple. However, the pawns could not be more ill-suited. Poetry, a free-spirited artist, and Adrian, a defense attorney would not normally choose one another. But when the gods interfere, anything is possible.
Donna Milward lives in Edmonton, Alberta in a tiny house with a huge yard. She’s been writing all her life, but decided to put writing on hold to get ‘a real job’ as a meatcutter and build a future with her beloved troll, Dan and her cat Freya. Twelve years later, an invitation to a Romance Writer’s Conference in Washington D.C. led not only to new friends and new knowledge, but to the inspiration to write again. Thoeba was completed the following year. Donna likes to mix her fascination with reincarnation and all things paranormal with her love of mythology in her work, and has even written her own myth ‘The Sacred Truth” (on earthtothoeba.blogspot.com) as the lore behind Thoeba and future novels to come. Donna enjoys fishing, gardening and canning. Despite these hobbies, she much prefers city life.
This book was given to me for an honest review by PRATR (Paranormal & Romance Authors That Rock) and the author. Aphrodite's War is a paranormal romance that centers around the Greek Gods. Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love is constantly at odds with her husband, Ares, Greek god of war. They constantly feud and argue much to the displeasure of everyone else on Olympus. Zeus, highest of all Greek gods decides to put an end to dealing with their constant bickering by proposing a contest, the winner is allowed to remain on Olympus with the loser being made to “fall” to earth for the term of 100 years. The contest is to have Aphrodite's champion fall in love with Are's champion. If they fall in love, Aphrodite wins, if not Ares wins. Aphrodite's pawn becomes Poetry, an unusual girl who colors her hair in various unnatural shades (pink, blue, red—with bingo markers) and has multiple piercings and tattoos. She is a part-time waitress at a coffee shop and practices her jewelry making metal-work trade on the side. She dreams of making jewelry as a profession and eventually moving to Greece, where she has ancestral roots. She is a good person but has made poor choices, just having broken up with a guy that she discovered was a drug addict after he became physically abusive. Are's pawn is Adrian, a successful defense attorney who drives a Bentley and lives in a nice uptown apartment. The two meet when Jenny, Poetry's roommate drags her to a club to meet a “decent, hard-working, suit-type.” Jenny lays eyes on a “suit” named Gary shortly after arriving and starts to sink her claws in him. He happens to have two friends who are with him, Ranjan and Adrian. Poetry is definitely NOT Adrian's normal type, but the two start talk and discover that they have nothing in common. With the gods intervening they eventually begin to see each other more and much to his surprise Adrian and Poetry begin to have feelings for each other regardless of all the gods and goddesses trying to intervene on both sides of the battle. The question is will “true” love win out in the end? Read and find out. I liked this book, although at first found the idea of the Gods and Goddesses playing with humans like pawns nerve racking, however it does lead to a satisfactory ending. This is a book that would be best enjoyed by those who like supernatural, mythological reads with a little bit of spice. There are a few sex scenes and a few violent scenes in this book that would make it best suited for an adult or at least young adult reader. I give this read 4 out of 5 fangs! I did enjoy reading it, however I felt it took a while for the book to really “take off.” I would recommend it!
wow just wow. Donna Millward You have done it Again.
this book had me hooked from start to finish. once again I'm impressed by the authors research skills. but I suppose that is part of the job.
Normally change of POV's confuse the hell out of me, but this was separated just enough that it felt like mini chapters within the chapter. the storyline flowed nicely and even with the change of POV's , it wasn't enough to distract from what was going on.
now to the story. Aphrodite and Ares were lovers once. but now they seem to bicker like a married couple. Zeus and the other gods are quite sick of this and set a challenge to make a couple of champions of their choosing with the aim to either make them fall in love or hate each other. easy enough right? wrong. Zeus imposes rules and the loser leaves Olympus for 100 years. Aphrodite chooses Poetry a young artist/part time waitress, and Ares chooses Adrian a young lawyer. Poetry and Adrian meet after her "best friend" Jenny meets his work colleague Gary while they were out for a few drinks after work. Jenny is a bit of a cow, And i really didn't warm up to her . fortunately we don't gets Jenny's POV during the book. Ares doesn't play fair of course and there are a few other players in this "Challenge". I really don't want to give too much away but I will say there are a few evil acts and evil characters to hate. with the perfect balance of loveable characters and romantic situations. will Poetry and Adrian fall in love? and what stands in their way?
As soon as I read that this book was up for review, I knew I wanted to read it as I love anything that touches base on the Greek Gods and Goddesses. In Aphrodite's War it seems that there is some trouble stirring up between the Gods and Goddesses and the only way it will be solved is with a little bit of mortal fun. So when Aphrodite and Aries - arch-enemies reach their final straw and arguments, the other Gods and Goddesses aren't very excited about it and so Zeus -being ruler over everything strikes up a plan. Aphrodite and Aries have to complete a task involving Mortals and the first one to complete the task will get to stay on Olympus, the other will be expelled. They say opposites do attract but will it be a simple task when the contestants to fall in love is Poetry- a free spirit whose name represents not only her namesake but also her personality and Adrian - a lawyer and we all know what male lawyers are like - all stuffy and by the book , rule followers. Can the two immortals help the mortals fall in love or will disasters and clashing personalities stand in the way of their happiness ? This book reminded me a bit of Staci Hart's Deer in the Headlights Series as it is along the same lines with the warring Gods and Goddesses and the getting the mortals to fall in love. If you love romance novels with a dash of Greek Mythology chucked into the mix, then Aphrodite's War is the read for you.

Aphrodite cast another glance at the lean and tanned Ares lounging on hos throne of bloodstone. He stroked his beard like a conceited cat. She loved him once, left Hephaestus for him. She came to regret following him, and wandered Olympus like a ghost, forever bored and lonely.
Little known fact about ME- I am fascinated with Greek Mythology and I get a bit obsessed with books and movies surrounding it so this this was a perfect fit for me or anyone else who feels the same way. I was completely drawn into the story right from the very beginning- I could not put it down, it was fascinating, exciting, action-packed, violent and surprising- simply put, it was everything I look forward to when surrounded by Greek Gods.
“The defeated will be banished from Olympus and must roam the earth as a human for one hundred years.”
Aphrodite loved her husband very much once upon a time, she left Eden for him- but the God he is now is nothing like the Ares she once fell in love with. What she is left with is discord, loneliness and a whole lot of bitterness. Fed up with the constant bickering between the two, Zeus proposes a challenge. It's quite simple really- each chooses a champion and it is Aphrodite's job to make sure they fall in love, all Ares has to do is prevent it. Loser gets banished to a mortal existence on Earth for 100 years. Sounds easy enough right? Aphrodite is confident that love will prevail, there is just one minor glitch- the chosen two couldn't be any less alike if they tried. A struggling Artist and a successful Attorney aren't likely to find common ground, so what are the chances the will fall in love? An when the God of War is set loose on Earth, can we really be sure defeating Aphrodite is all he's after? Can opposites really attract and in the end, does it even matter?
“Someone stole his mommy.” Amir must be worried sick. Adrian gave his head a shake. Amir the cat. Worried sick. This day went from bad to screwed-the-hell-up and it was only getting worse.
there was so much going on in this book and the POV jumps from character to character often enough that there really was no break from the action. At it's core, this is a love story, but it was so much more than that. The anticipation is kept at an all time high throughout and you never knew what was coming next, only that it would be different levels of bad. Ares turned out to be way more twisted than I anticipated, deception and destruction lay around every corner, I fell head over heals in love with Poetry but hated her best friend Jenny, and Adrian caused me quite a bit of conflict. I warmed up to him in the end, but it took some time. Some of his thoughts on Poetry (even if she isn't his normal type) just pissed me way the hell off- his 'slumming' comment had me fit to be tied. With so many different characters drawing so many different emotions out of me, I could hardly sit still. This author did a fine job of knocking me on my ass- just amazing work. I have very quickly become a bigtime fan and cannot wait to see what she brings us in the future.
Her future just changed for the better. This sunrise announced a new beginning with a great guy. Not a psycho. Lucky her.

*This book was given to me by the author in exchange for an honest review*
I love Greek mythology so I was so excited to read this. Up in Mount Olympus, Aphrodite and Ares have been bickering for a while so Zeus says they will have a contest and whoever loses has to live on Earth for 100 years. The contest rules are simple: both Gods get to choose their own person and Aphrodite has to make sure they fall in love in a week, where Ares has to make sure it doesn’t happen. Aphrodite chooses a girl named Poetry who is an artist and free spirit, and Ares chooses Adrian who is a lawyer and very by the book. Aphrodite makes Poetry and Adrian meet at a bar where Poetry and her friend Jenny are hanging out. They make small talk and don’t think they’ll become anything more then friends when Poetry’s ex boyfriend Kevin comes and starts harassing her. Adrian and the friends he’s with manage to kick Kevin out but Adrian takes Poetry home and makes sure that her and Jenny’s apartment is all clear just to be safe. To say thanks Poetry stops by Adrian’s office the next day and offers to take him on a picnic that she packed. They do start to hit it off but Ares, determined to win the challenge, sends his minion Strife to Earth to have her cause havoc. She’s messed up sometimes before and Ares has taken his aggression out on her sexually. Strife figures if she does what Ares wants then he’ll finally let her go and let her live the life she never had. I don’t want to give away the ending but it ends on a surprising note. You really want all the characters to have a happy and ending and some of them do…and some don’t. It was a good read and I enjoyed the story but the only thing I didn’t like all that well was when the author was describing the characters. She does describe them well, but you’re already pretty into the story before she tells you what they look like. I had a completely different look for Poetry when I was first reading. However the story was very well written and I really enjoyed it and I recommend anyone who also loves Greek mythology to check it out because there are a few different Gods that make a surprise appearance.

Review: Aphrodite's War by Donna Milward Looking through my reviews and you will find an abundance of mythology books that I have read and loved, but what I noticed after reading Aphrodite's War was the severe lack of adult reads in this genre. This book was such a refreshing step in the direction of the Gods that gave me everything from a myth lesson to hot and steamy scenes to a mixture of modern life with ancient principals. This crazy marital fight between Aphrodite and Ares leads to all sorts of messy situations....all the puns intended!
From Gods to humans, the cast of characters contained in this book was wild. You could feel the hatred coming off the page from Aphrodite and her resentment, almost smell Ares putrid stench and Poetry was funky chick that I'd love to hang out with. The human romance was organic, although clearly with divine intervention, but it felt like they didn't rush into things nor take it too slow. Along with the human minor characters, there was a great introduction to other Gods such as the Norse myths that mixed well into the story. Discord and inspiration hung on every other page and really sent these characters on quite the trip by the time we were done and I felt like they had been dragged through the ringer.
The only issue I had with this book was the amount of information contained within it's pages. Never a bad thing when it comes to be entertaining, however, some of the story lines seemed to get muddled because they were glanced over to move the story along. The whole Hephaestus/Poetry thing seemed awkward, Strife and her story got lost a bit but I wanted to know more and Jenny, Poetry's roommate, just needed to go. However, if my biggest complaint is too much going on then I clearly didn't have that hard a time reading it! I thought it was a hot and sexy romance with lots and lots of meddling which is what I have come to expect from the literary Gods and I wasn't disappointed!
I was given a copy of Aphrodite’s War by Donna Milward for an honest review. Now I will tell you up front, this is a new author for me. But I enjoyed this story, so this is an author who I very much look forward to reading more from in the future. This book happens to be a Paranormal Romance, but unlike most stories in the paranormal genre that I have read recently, it is not dealing with witches, warlocks, werewolves, shifters or even vampires. Nope! This book is dealing with Greek Mythology. It is very well written for a multi-person POV book and is so easy to read and the best thing is it kept my attention from beginning to end.
Aphrodite and Ares are constantly at each other’s throats with all of the fighting and bickering that they due. But considering the all mighty Zeus wants it to stop he makes a contest between the two. The catch is the one that loses this contest has to live with mere mortals for the term of 100 years. Now I know you wondering what the contest is. This is the best part, two mortals must be chosen and if the mortals fall in love then Aphrodite wins, if they don’t fall in love then Ares wins.
Now we meet the unknowing victims (hmm players should we call them) in game. Poetry and Adrian, they can be more different from each other, but hey they do say opposites attract. Poetry is a tattooed-jewelry making waitress and she does not like lawyers. And of course Adrian just happens to be a lawyer. They have nothing common, but even with interfering Gods can they possibly find their true love and live happily ever after is the question.
Now, as much as I want to go on and tell you every part about the book with Poetry and Adrian, I know can’t because of spoilers. Just know that this is a book worth reading and I can’t wait to see what the author comes up with next that I can read.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Aphrodite and Ares, once lovers, hate each other. Their constant bickering and fighting has caused Zeus to issue a challenge. They have two weeks and the loser will be forced to live on Earth as a human for 100 years. The challenge. Aphrodite must make two humans fall in love, Ares must prevent that from happening. Aphrodite chooses a human whose family line has always worshipped her. She chooses Poetry, a jewelry maker with tattoos and piercings. Ares chooses Adrian, a lawyer. Two very opposite people and they know it. Poetry doesn’t like stuffy lawyers. Adrian stereotypes Poetry because of her body art. They have very little in common. What happens when the Gods start playing with humans? Will they make it out alive and in love? Or will they succumb to a little Strife?
I really enjoyed this story. It was well-written and easy-to-read. It kept my attention from beginning to end. I was kind of leery before I started reading. I wasn’t sure what I was getting into with the mythology aspect. Fortunately, the mythology didn’t take away from the story. This was pretty much a love story between two people that are complete opposites. A stuffy lawyer and a free artist. I loved Poetry. I hated her best friend Jenny, she was just too self-centered. Adrian did make me want to throw my Kindle across the room a few times. I was very frustrated with his thoughts of Poetry. I didn’t really care for the ending. I would have liked a little more of an epilogue of Poetry and Adrian’s relationship. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by this book and would recommend it to anyone that loves romance with a dash of mythology.
Aphrodite and Aries can not get along. They have got so bad with their arguing the other gods are ready to separate them so Zeus has proposed a contest between them. Whoever loses is banned to live as a human for 100 years. Aphrodite must get two mortals to fall in love. Aries must stop them. The two people they pick don't seem like they will ever work but Aphrodite has high hopes. They aren't the only two messing with the lives of Poetry and Adrian.
I love stories with mythology in them. Aphrodite will do anything to get rid of Aries and he wants to get rid of her. They are both ruthless in gaining their goals but I will say Aries a little more so. Poetry has just broke up with her boyfriend and at a friend's request goes out with her. She meets Adrian who is a lawyer and much more different than she is. She has tattoos, different color hair and is a free spirit. Adrian is a defense lawyer who doesn't care for the people he defends. When Adrian's ex boyfriend approaches her Adrian rescues her and the two begin a friendship. They don't plan on dating but they keep getting together. The gods have started messing with the humans and the whole town is riled up from their actions. I personally didn't feel a real connection between Poetry and Adrian. Adrian was a good guy one minute and seem like a jerk the next minute. The one person that really kept all my interest was Strife. She did all kinds of things and you never saw them coming. I liked all the surprises the book had to offer and loved all the different gods and goddesses. If you enjoy stories with mythology you may enjoy this one.
Aphrodite and Ares are fighting again. Zeus and the rest of the Gods are tired of it so Aphrodite and Ares enter into a contest. Aphrodite has two weeks to get Poetry and Adrian to fall in love or live for 100 years on Earth as a mortal. Ares has to prevent that from happening.
Poetry works as a waitress but her passion is making jewelry. Fresh out of a relationship that's anything but over. Kevin her ex comes to the diner she works at starts causing a scene. This causes Adrian to interfere and stand up to Kevin.
Poetry is covered with tattoos and not what Adrian would normally be attracted to. After helping her with her out with her idiot ex-boyfriend, Adrian starts to spend some time getting to know her. She makes him laugh.
I loved all the characters in this story. I enjoyed the different perspective you got of the Gods in this book. I felt such sadness and happiness for Aphrodite at times during this book.
This book had it all. There was romance, action, hatred, and betrayal. Thank you Donna for such a great read. It was great to see the world through your eyes. I will be recommending this book to my friends.
I love all things related to mythology so I figured this book would be a good fit. I was kind of disappointed however. The story was well written I just struggled with all the characters. There were times when I honestly didn't know whose part of the story I was reading.
I loved how the author mixed multiple different dieties (i.e. - Norse, Greek, and Roman). I am still unsure of what Ares plan was in this book, was he trying to take over everything or just Earth? I am glad that Adrian and Poetry wound up together. Jenny and Gary kept throwing me for a loop. Then Ranjan falls for Sarah who ends up being a demi goddess.
There were just too many story plots to easily follow. It was however still a good book and I read it rather quickly. I guess I was looking for a little bit more clarity in some things. I would gladly recommend this book to others and I would read more books by Donna as well.
Aphrodite and Ares are at it again and the rest of the Gods have had it with the both of them. Zeus orders one of them leave Olympus. There will be a contest to decide which one will have to live on earth for the next hundred years. Aphrodite and Ares will each choose a person on earth. Aphrodite must make them fall in love. Ares must keep that from happening. They make their choices and it reminded me a bit of Dharma and Greg. Poetry is a free spirit, Adrian is a straight laced lawyer. This had the makings for a mindless sit-com, but Milward chose a wise path and turned this into a fast paced romantic/thriller. Two Gods are at war and humans are the pawns. There are strategies, sacrifices, and betrayals - people will die.
Aphrodite's War is a page-turner and the writing is solid. I'm no expert on Greek (or Norse) mythology, but it all sounded plausible and I'm guessing Milward did her research. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
This story was a multi-person POV and that did get confusing at first but once I got the hang of how the story rolled I was able to fly right threw the pages. The Characters are one of my favorite things about this story they each come from different worlds, different backgrounds and I really liked how they came together towards the end.
Must read if you love mythology!!!
***I received this story for free in exchange for an honest review, seem ore of my review @ http://jmhoward2007.blogspot.com on 3-14-14***
This book was good. The mythology was fun to read and the author writes extremely well. They mythology was unique at times following a different path than the most common of myths but it was also true to the old myths as well. Kind of a blend of the traditional beloved mythology and a new twist that kept the story unique making it one that hadn't been heard before. There were some parts I was rather grumbly about after reading them, parts I won't be able to mention because it would spoil things but when you read the book you should be able to figure out what I'm referring to (I can probably safely just say flower shop and very end, maybe that's enough?). Anyway it was a well written, enjoyable, unique tale.
I have a lot of things I want to say about this book, but I won't. All I will say is that it was nothing I ever want to see again. I really hated it. I don't often have such an adverse reaction to a book, but this one I DNF'd. The writing style wasn't something I enjoyed. It was a lot of things I don't enjoy.
Greek mythology is my thing, but this book was incredibly disappointing. I'd give it no stars if I could.
