Recently re-read this and liked it for what it is. However what it is is fantasy fulfillment. The 61 year old author writes of a 16 year old young man who's fascinated with history and falls for a gay 35 year old scion of a city who reads much older than 35.
Kevin, the young man who has been restored to his mother along with his younger brother when she gets out of the hospital following a long stay for an alcohol related illness. Also on the scene is a new step father.
Kevin's younger brother is more streetwise than Kevin but Kevin catches up quickly as the two kids are pretty much unsupervised; the parents diving back into the bottles that have caused their problems.
Kevin explores his interests in the seedier side of life but quickly realizes that what he really wants is a parental influence.
There's NOT a lot of in-depth character development here and this will never be a great novel but it is an interesting artifact of the period in which such things were written.

Of course, the central premise of the story (sexual relationships between underage teenagers and adults) is highly problematic. In fact, the book at one point actually lists the numerous ways in which the relationship between eponymous 15 year old Kevin and Bruce, 20 years his senior, is unquestionably illegal. Beyond this however, the book represents an interesting meditation on some aspects of gayness that are not usually broached.
Having just finished the recently published Find Me , which also deals with intergenerational love at first sight, it was interesting to come back to that theme from the perspective and with the sensibilities of a different era.
Kevin was published in 1980 and is ostensibly set contemporaneously but there is a timeless feel to the story and it could just as well be set 50 or even 100 years before. It is in any case much more gritty than Find Me, dealing as it does with the recognisable tropes of the rent boy, the vulnerable deprived youth and class differences.
No doubt trying to avoid possible accusations of exploitations, Hamilton turns Kevin into an empowered agent. Despite his difficult background, and the journey of self-discovery on which he finds himself, there is on the whole no sense that he is being exploited by the men who pay for his services. He feels very much in control in that respect. And it is in his dysfunctional relationships with his family and his peers that things get more difficult and unbalanced.
For Kevin, prostitution with older men becomes much more than a means to earn money (which, although a real need since his mother regularly squanders the state aid she receives on booze, feels very secondary). It is a way from him to discover his sexuality (the financial transaction being at first a get away card from accusations of gayness) and to learn about who he is. There is a sense that his various encounters with older men (the vast majority of those presented in the book being non-coersive and positive for Kevin) are a way from him to realise that he isn't alone, find kin and to take possession of his heritage as a gay man.
In that respect Hamilton places himself in line with the pederastic Greek tradition, whereby the older partner is a teacher for the younger one, making the point that, unlike their straight counterparts who blithely grow up in the right "cultural soup", each gay person has to discover and reconstruct the culture and roots of their kind by themselves.
It is thus clear what Kevin gets from those age-disparate relationships.
For the men he encounters, things are a lot murkier, though. Beyond the uncomplicated sexual release, there is companionship but Hamilton doesn't explore this at all. Even in the case of Bruce, who forms an immediate attachment for Kevin, although there are hazy hints at a patrician need for filiation, it is not clear what is the source of that attachment and what he may seek and gain from the relationship, other than sexual gratification.
This is I think the week point of the book, since the author chooses a controversial frame for his story, which would have worked just as well by making Kevin a few years older. The remains however well-written and engrossing.

Die Lambda Edition war 1980 in Hamburg als Verlag des sich sonst meistens Hans Eppendorfer nennenden Hans-Peter Reichelt und als Ableger von dessen Zeitschrift „him“ gegründet worden. „Der Ledermann“ schied jedoch im folgenden Jahr schon wieder aus. Der Buchverlag tauchte erst in der Mitte der neunziger Jahre wieder auf, brachte es auch da nur auf eine Handvoll kartonierter Schwulenbücher. Unter denen sich allerdings „Trapez“ von Marion Zimmer Bradley befand, ein veritabler Hit jener Jahre. Auf den seinerzeit schon verstorbenen Amerikaner Wallace Hamilton (1919 bis 1983, der Mann ist über 60 gewesen, als sein im Original schlicht „Kevin“ genannter Päderastenroman erschien) war man wohl über dessen dickeres, bekannteres Werk „Nie mehr im Schrank“ („Coming Out“, englisch 1977, deutsch 1986) gekommen, das vom Publikumsverlag Knaur im Taschenbuch verlegt worden war. Heute ist nun weithin vergessen, dass es auch mal eine deutsche Übersetzung von „Kevin“ gegeben hat, „Jäger der Nacht“ heißt sie.
Wallace Hamilton war New Yorker, er starb auch in New York, nach Verletzungen, die er sich selbst beigebracht hatte. Er war verheiratet, hatte drei Söhne gezeugt. „Kevin“ spielt in einer ungenannten Großstadt an der Ostküste, offenbar ein Mix aus Philadelphia und Boston, irgendwann in den siebziger Jahren, als Teenager angeblich noch für Mick Jagger schwärmten und von AIDS noch nichts ahnen konnten. Es ist die Liebesgeschichte zwischen einem allein lebenden Erben und Wertpapierverkäufer, Mitte 30, Bruce, und einem 15-jährigen Straßenjungen, der erst seit Kurzem wieder bei seinen Alkoholikereltern lebt und dem jüngeren Bruder als Stricher nachzufolgen begonnen hat. (Die Mutter war lange krank, hat noch mal geheiratet, die Jungen sind bei Pflegefamilien, also getrennt voneinander, aufgewachsen.)
Es ist, das sollte man klar artikulieren, keine der üblichen Coming-out-Romanzen mit jungen Schwulen, sondern eine päderastische Fantasie. Das „inter-generational“, was andere Rezensenten erwähnt und dann eher zu vergessen versucht haben, ist die Hauptsache des Buchs. Und es ist, was das anbelangt, nicht realistisch, sondern eher eine Zusammenstellung von Visionen eines wesentlich älteren Mannes, der sich rückblickend viel mehr Zeit an der Seite von schwulen Jugendlichen gewünscht hätte. Die Erzählperspektive wechselt von Kapitel zu Kapitel und große Teile des Buchs geben vor, direkt der Gedankenwelt des Jugendlichen, also Kevins, der beim Strichen seine eigene Homosexualität entdeckt, zu entspringen. Wobei wohl niemand diese Nachfühlung einer Figurenpsyche für restlos überzeugend halten wird. Der Aspekt „Wunschfantasie“ kann für dieses Buch kaum bestritten werden, wobei ich zum Beispiel finde, es gibt genug Wunschfantasien über die große Liebe von Frauen und Männern, dass es ruhig auch welche von Päderasten über die zu Halbwüchsigen geben darf.
Ich wage es, das Buch, dessen Schockmomente sich in Grenzen halten, sogar in die Rubrik „young adult“ einzusortieren, weil Hamilton sich unverkennbar um Aufrichtigkeit müht und sich konsequent pornografischem Voyeurismus verweigert.
Man erkennt, dass Hamilton für den von ihm angestrebten Plot über einen Coming-out-Jungen aus der Unterschicht, der über den Weg der homosexuellen Prostitution nicht etwa in ständig wachsende Schwierigkeiten abrutscht, sondern aus diesen befreit und zur großen Liebe geführt wird, eine ganze Latte von Voraussetzungen und Wendepunkte aufbietet, wie sie für jegliche „wahre“ Geschichte schlicht nicht mehr geglaubt werden könnten. Aber wieso sollten über Päderastie nur noch Sachbücher, Studien und Reports verfasst werden und nie mehr Fiktionen?
Wie dem auch sei, jedenfalls bekommen wir es mit einer Familie zu tun, in der beide Elternteile an der Flasche hängen, die Mutter ständig krank und der Vater irgendwo pädophil ist. In der die zwei Kinder männlich und alle beide schwul sind. Aber getrennt, auch von der Mutter, aufgewachsen, sodass Kevin, der Ältere, ein Unschuldsknabe ist, während der erst 13-jährige Bruder Dennis sich schon seit Jahren allerlei Drogen und Luxuswaren verschafft, indem er sich an ältere Männer verkauft. Dennis ist es, der Kevin in der elterlichen Wohnung zum Schnüffeln von Farben mittels Plastikbeuteln verleitet. Das ist doch schon ein bisschen viel. Aber noch nicht alles. Es braucht nur zwei Erfahrungen als Straßenstricher, bis Kevin gelernt hat, dass er es gerne hätte, wenn ältere Männern ihn oral verwöhnen, dass er jetzt aber auch mit der Gefahr lebt, von Freiern vergewaltigt zu werden. Und schon wird Kevin vom kleinen Bruder zu einer nächtlichen Orgie in einem Friedhof mitgenommen, wo nach reichlich Alkohol härtere Drogen wie LSD geschluckt werden, dann ein schwächerer, kleinerer Junge, weil er es angeblich mag, reihum anal vergewaltigt wird. Hamilton bringt das höchst effektiv, Schlag auf Schlag, das Buch ist sehr gut geschrieben. Aber wer an dieser Stelle nicht gemerkt hat, dass es eine Kolportagemär zur Unterhaltung einer bestimmten Abnehmerschicht ist, wer immer noch nach umfassendem und faktenbasierten Überblick über schwules Leben in den USA verlangt, der ist hier schief gewickelt.
Von einem gewissen Stadium an ist diese Figur Dennis (die für Liam Ostermann zu einer harschen Abwertung des Romans geführt hat) schlicht durch und abgehakt für den Roman, in dem sie so, wie sie ist und sich verhalten hat, immer war, weil sie zur Kevin-Geschichte eine beschleunigende Funktion beitrug. Bevor er seinen Bruce kennen lernt, was tatsächlich erst kurz vor Mitte der Erzählung geschieht, wir Leser kennen da Bruce schon längere Zeit, weil die Perspektiven der Kapitel gewechselt hatten und wir Bruces Vorgeschichte brauchten, soll Kevin erkannt haben, dass ihm schwuler Sex Spaß machen kann, soll er Analverkehr erprobt haben, soll er sich in einer Entwicklung befinden, die in die Drogenabhängigkeit führen könnte, soll er sein Heim als Hölle erfahren haben, in dem er niemandem trauen kann, soll er erlebt haben, dass er von den Lebenserfahrungen älterer Männer profitieren kann. Darum geht es und dabei ist Dennis dann nur noch eine Schachfigur. Mich störte da mehr, dass Wallace Hamilton zuerst die Figur der kessen, immer gut aufgelegten, immer geilen Jung-Tunte Lenny ins Buch holt und dann wieder rausschmeißt, als hätte sie nie eine Rolle gespielt.
Es gibt Stellen, die einen zu Tränen rühren können, vor allem wegen der Beiläufigkeit, in der Hamilton sie anbringt. So, wenn die Erfahrungen von Lust und Geborgenheit beim ersten Sex mit dem 20 Jahre älteren Bruce den 15-Jährigen schockartig überrollen, sodass Kevin sich ohne Hinterlassung einer Adresse oder Telefonnummer aus Bruces Wohnung flüchtet und schwört, wenn es so etwas gebe, könne er nicht mehr strichen. Oder, später im Buch, wenn Kevin erkennt, dass er selbst einer der Gewalttäter gewesen ist, die Bruces vormaligen Lebenspartner im Park schwer verletzt hatten. Jetzt muss er fürchten, auch Bruce hätte davon erfahren und erwägt, ihn zu verlassen, um nicht der Polizei übergeben zu werden. Dennoch schleicht er sich zu Bruces Haus, geht nur nicht hinein, wartet auf der Schwelle, um endlich sein Geständnis abzulegen. „Soll ich gehen?“, fragt er Bruce und als dieser nur „Ja“ sagt, geht er wortlos, bis Bruce hinter ihm her läuft, ihn festhält und seinerseits gesteht, dass er kürzlich noch mal in den Park gegangen ist und dort von der Polizei verhaftet wurde, sich jetzt vor Durchdringen dieser Affäre an seinem Arbeitsplatz zu fürchten hat.
Nett gemeint, aber doch etwas aufgesetzt fand ich Hamiltons Einfall, die Erotik zwischen Mann und Junge mit einer Art Serie von Unterrichtsstunden über die Geschichte der USA, gerade auch den Anteil schwuler Männer darin, zu verquicken. Es wird sehr deutlich darauf hingezeigt, dass Kevin in diesem Stadtviertel die einzige Person ist, die einen Sinn für Geschichte entwickelt hat. Und von wem kann der Hunger nach Wissen besser befriedigt werden als von entweder alten oder sehr gebildeten Schwulen? Lernt man nicht am leichtesten, schnellsten, meisten, wenn man liebt? Es ist alles nur ein Märchen, aber ein schönes.

Wallace Hamilton is an icon. Kevin was incredibly touching story of street boy who just happens to fall in love with an older man. It's beautifully written with unexpected twists, heart breaking moments, and a fantastic HEA.
This book shows what older/younger relationships looked like in the early days of the gay movement and a must read for any fan of mm romance.

I presume, for the purposes of this review, that anyone wishing to reading it will know the basic story outline.
I want to begin by saying it is impossible to conceive of this book's publication today by a mainstream publisher (as it was) any more then one can imagine, if it was, that it would carry carry the imprimatur of the NAMBLA (which I don't imagine as a campaigning organisation still exists - legally). Having said this I do not believe that it is a 'bad' book in the moral sense - all that matters is whether whether a book is well or badly written - not an original observation of mine, but of Oscar Wilde. This book is badly written and I will try and explain why.
Kevin and his brother Dennis are separated when they are 5 and 3 respectively by their mother's alcoholism and sent to different foster homes - Kevin to a relatively middle class, suburban homes and Dennis to slatternly and abusive inner city homes near the docks. They do not meet again for 10 years - though Kevin has apparently seen his mother a few times in the intervening years. The two boys are both reunited with their mother, who has a new husband, in an inner city area near where Dennis has been living but a far cry from the sylvan suburban world of Kevin. The family is brought together by Social Services who seem totally blind to the inadequacies of the boys' mother. Social Services as inefficient and corrupt and fostering as a nightmare of poor care and sexual abuse is a cliché in American books, film and TV stories.
Upon being reunited Kevin is quickly introduced to drinking, drugs and prostitution by Dennis and, in the peculiar morality of American 'B' movies storylines, Kevin as the corrupted remains pure and unaffected, while Dennis as the corruptor is written as not simply unredeemable but of unworthy of redemption. Kevin, who is struggling to understand his sexuality, is not a real person but a representation of a good young gay person who needs help and understanding to mature. In fact as a 'good' gay boy he resembles all those 'good' black men played by Sidney Poitier (culminating in his apogee of impossible goodness in 'Guess Who's Coming to Dinner') in the films of the 50's and 60's, they were not real characters, they had no flaws or failings and never responded to the slings and arrows that fate, or prejudice throw at them. Poitier's characters are clichés who justify tolerance and acceptance for black people as a whole. Kevin can thus be the worthy partner of the 'good' gay, older man, who falls in love with, feels a responsibility towards, and wants to settle down with Kevin. Poor Dennis is last seen, after the mother is taken back into hospital again, permanently we later learn, flirting in an increasingly sexual way with his step father in a search for affection and safety.
It is for all these reasons that I call this a bad book but most particularly because of the way the younger brother Dennis is treated. He receives no sympathy from the author or his brother - he is 'unworthy' he has been 'spoilt', very much like the 'fallen' women in Victorian fiction or those girls who get murdered in slasher films after they have sex. There is no redemption for him. It is a ridiculous tart-with-a-heart-of-gold story and one that was, and still has a powerful draw (see 'In the Closet of the Vatican' and closeted gay priests in Rome who fall in love with and want to save their rent-boys).
In reality this is a story of two deeply damaged boys, Kevin and Dennis, who use their bodies to get affection, attention, love, etc. because they have nothing else, power is with others, they have none. It is particularly repulsive that only one is seen as worthy of sympathy or help.
I want to stress that my objections and condemnation of this as a bad book have nothing to do with the pros or cons of intergenerational sex. I have read recently 'A crocodile of Choirboys' and 'When Jonathan Died' and enjoyed them both and would recommend them and have no problem regarded both as works of literature.
I want to begin by saying it is impossible to conceive of this book's publication today by a mainstream publisher (as it was) any more then one can imagine, if it was, that it would carry carry the imprimatur of the NAMBLA (which I don't imagine as a campaigning organisation still exists - legally). Having said this I do not believe that it is a 'bad' book in the moral sense - all that matters is whether whether a book is well or badly written - not an original observation of mine, but of Oscar Wilde. This book is badly written and I will try and explain why.

I read this over 20 years ago and so can't remember anything other than how the young man struggled with his homosexual feelings until he found a lover who helped him accept himself and presumably live "happily ever after."

This was an interesting coming of age story, but it seriously lost me by the end
