5 Elephants (1)

Winner of the 2016 Skipping Stones Honor Award in the Nature and Ecology category. Starred selection on the International Literacy Association's Teachers' Choice list for 2015. It's a delicate balance, given the author's obvious passion for elephants and his zeal to protect them, to present the information in such a way that it inspires activism rather than alienates with proselytizing, and for the most part, he succeeds. Part of this success is due to the book's upbeat design, it's full of color photos and includes featurettes titled 'Good News for Elephants.' A worthy book that encourages ethical thinking about elephants. -- Kirkus Reviews Elephants are truly remarkable, unmistakable animals. Their huge size, giant ears, amazing trunk and incredible intelligence make them unique in the natural world. They are highly active, complex, wide-ranging animals who play a key role in the ecosystems they inhabit. 5 Elephants will provide young readers with fascinating elephant facts and figures, as well as introduce them to some of the serious challenges that wild and captive elephants face. To truly understand elephants, though, we must also get to know them as individuals. We must learn their stories.

Elephants are graceful and beautiful creatures. They have a huge capacity to love and nurture. The author has chosen five famous elephants and told their stories in this book. There is also a chapter filled with interesting facts about elephants. The book also has tips on how to become an elephant guardian, a list of elephant welfare organizations, and a glossary.

I love elephants so this was a really neat book for me. The photography was wonderfully done and really shows the elephants at their best. The author is a biologist, but the book was written for us laymen to understand. I read the book to my children (8 yrs and 5 yrs) and they loved it. The writing style is simple, but tugs at your heartstrings. I could definitely see this book becoming a great resource in a school setting.

I received this book free of charge from Goodreads in exchange for my honest review.

This title is nominated for the 2016 hackmatack award in the non-fiction category.

I really enjoyed this one! I liked the way the author focused in on the five specific elephants, personalizing the issue. The information was presented in such a way that I was learning a lot about elephants & their plight, but it didn't feel like I was being preached at. My only real beef with the book is the self promotion at the end - I understand that authors have to promote their work to support themselves, but the full page of praise for the book that I just read was a bit much (see page 82 'praise for 5 elephants'). All in all, a real contender!
