Rate this book

Attending an elite high school turns my life around... until I sleep with my teacher.

A fun girl's night out takes a dark turn when I'm stupefied and stolen from the nightclub by a sexy stranger. A mistake that bites even deeper when I meet the dominating man again... in his new role as my high school English teacher.

What happened between us can never happen again.
His job is on the line.
I could lose my scholarship.

But everyone in Kingswood College hides a secret and my teacher is no exception.

Conner isn't the mild-mannered man he makes himself out to be. He doesn't let consequences stop him from taking what he wants and the more I try to be good...

... the more he wants me as his good girl.

This is a DARK student/teacher M/F romance with an eight-year age gap and links to organized crime. The story contains graphic scenes, mature content, and elements that may be triggering. Please read at your discretion and check the warning in the preface of the book.

Lesson Learned by Layla Simon, follows the relationship between a student named Paisley and her English teacher, Conner. As someone who enjoys reading dark romances, I prefer morally ambiguous villains over the nice guy, but this story surprised even me with its kinky shenanigans!

Conner is a member of a mafia family and is assigned to uncover secrets at Paisley's school while posing as the new English teacher. They first meet at a nightclub, sharing a moment of passion, and are later surprised to cross paths again in the classroom.

I was shocked to find myself liking Conner and Paisley; I even enjoyed their developing romance. I was eager to see how things would play out.

Layla Simon does an excellent job of pushing the boundaries of her readers. While this story is taboo and may make some readers uncomfortable with explicit scenes of dubious and non-consensual sex, you come to care for these flawed characters who are dealing with past trauma.

Lesson Learned is perfect for readers of dark romance who enjoy emotionally damaged protagonists with unconventional kink.

Initial afterthoughts: Huh. I can read the one I wanted now.

Read in two sittings. Picked because the second book was in my recs and I needed to get through this one. Student/teacher romances are in that hit or miss area for me, same with huge age gaps. After a certain extent they creep me out. For this one I was glad he wasn't actually the teacher. I liked Paisley and Connor. Together they were simple and uncomplicated. It was James and Marnie that threw the spanner in the works and made things really uncomfortable.

There was the bartender drugging and initial take me home, but other than that Connor was doing as he was told and was sweet to Paisley, although the initial thoughts about her dress...meh.

James was vile. Gross. Gross. Gross. Ick. A shame he didn't suffer more. Nice HEA. But yeah, James. Controlling, abusive and ugh.

This book had a hold on me! I read it in one sitting! Before you start reading make sure you check the tw/cw! This is a student/teacher, age gap, forbidden romance, noncon/dubcon and somnophilia.

Paisley was out one night at a club and ended up 💊ed. Connor was there and he ended up taking care of her that night. When Paisley goes back to school, guess who is her teacher? Connor!

After a night at the club and seeing Paisley in his classroom, will Connor stay away from her? You will have to read the book to find out what happens with Connor and Paisley!

Not really sure with this book. Did I love some parts of it? Absolutely! Did I hate some parts of it? Absolutely! Did I almost dnf this book? Yup did I power through, also yup.

Things I loved:

❤️ I loved the fact it was student/teacher.

❤️ I loved the fact the spice started quickly.

❤️ I loved the fact that the spicy scenes were hot, detailed and plentiful.

Things I hated:

👎 I didnt like the “friends”. Just no

👎 James. Just hell no. The almost dnf part. I have no triggers, I will read anything. Just look at my bookshelf to see that’s a fact. I feel the book could have been better without the detail of the events. I have read other books with his actions and didn’t feel the need to dnf, there was just something about him and the event description that made me want to dnf.

👎. Overall, the plot was kinda boring.

It was hard to rate. I wanted to give it 4 stars just for the spicy scenes but the story wasn’t entertaining.

I received the ARC for free in return for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this taboo teacher/student novel. I've read several other books by this author and have like them all so far. The only criticism I have is I would've liked to see a bit more of the crime family involvement. It's talked about a ton but not really involved in the story. It think it would've given it a bit more storyline action. However I still really liked the direction this novel took. I smiled, laughed , got sad and at one point almost threw my phone in rage.I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I received this book as an arc. I was excited to read it because student/teacher is my favorite trope and this book did not disappoint! Paisley and Connor were so cute together and the spice was on point. I highly recommend Lesson Learned if you're looking for raunchy taboo!

Very taboo teacher student romance

First and foremost heed the trigger warnings the author provides at the start of the book. This is a dark romance with a morally grey/black hero and a young woman who goes through a lot of triggering things, at his hands and others.

The main female character is 17 and using a fake ID that says she's 23, she goes to a night club with her friends the weekend before her senior year of high school as one last hurrah before school is back in session. While there someone slips a drug into her drink and the gorgeous guy she's been flirting with isn't aware of it until after he's had sex with her. The whole experience gets brushed off as a one night stand until *surprise* first thing Monday morning she finds out her one night stand is her teacher.

There are a number of taboo or forbidden aspects at play in this story-

There is an age gap, she turns 18 days after the incident and he is 26.

She is a high school student and he is a teacher.

He is connected to an organized crime family and she is not.

He has...kinks...the kind that are generally illegal.

Beyond all that, the story was well written, the editing was solid, the spicy scenes, while triggering at times, were very detailed and interesting. (In a good way).

I loved how despite being a manipulative, predatory, morally grey/black guy...he was unfailingly sweet to the heroine. A lot of times in dark romances it can be hard to root for a couple, because of how toxic and abusive the men are. In this case, this guy straddled the line between toxic and sweet beautifully. My opinion of course.

All in all I loved it. Looking forward to reading more books by this author.

✅Dark Romance
✅Professor/Student taboo

Paisley and Conner first need at a nightclub and share a moment 😏 little do they know that they’ll soon be seeing each other in a professional setting!

I loved the banter between Paisley and Conner and how their relationship developed. The only thing I would have liked to see more of what Conners family crime involvement. It felt like it was just thrown in there

Another yummy read by Layla Simon!

This is only my 2nd? Maybe 3rd?? book by her and boy oh boy can’t I wait to read more. Left a few loose ends but I’m guessing/hoping those get tied up in the next book.
All in all a nâughty stëamy novel with sprinkles of a thriller thrown in for fun. The triggers are REAL and brutal people so if you have any please proceed with caution.

ARC REVIEW!!!
⭐⭐⭐⭐✨
🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

CHECK TW BEFORE READING!!!

This story was a rollercoaster.. it took me a lil bit to get into this story, the MMC hit it off from the first meet but the FMC had to reign herself in as she wasn't that person anymore and the MMC was consumed by the fact that the FMC looked so much like his ex-wife.

This story is about a student/teacher forbidden dark romance with a mafia twist. The FMC is from a poor family whilst attending an elite school that she got into on her high grades and the MMC becomes her English teacher after their first encounter. This book won't be for everyone due to the TW content but for everyone who loves a good forbidden dark romance with TW this story will be for you.

Short review but I don't want to drop spoilers! Highly recommend

Killer cover but that’s about the most positive thing I can say here. They can’t all be winners. This was an all around total miss for me. Age gap isn’t my favorite and neither is student/teacher stuff.

The h is sexually assaulted by her friends villainous boyfriend a few times on page. That really made me dislike the entire story.

I can’t really recommend this one.

I love Laylas writing so when I saw she had a age gap book I had to read it.

Paisley goes on a night out with her friends, in the nightclub she meets a gorgeous man-Connor, after an unfortunate incident she ends up in his care…
Back to school she walks into her classroom to discover Connor is the teacher.
Vowing to stay away to protect him and herself from their secret.
Connor has more secrets then I’ve had hot dinners. BIG secrets.
Despite the consequences that will happen, Connor isn’t taking no for an answer.

This book, whoah. Dark, steamy, age gap, praise I loved it.
The regular shock of events throughout the book left me page turning too.
Layla smashed it again and this is why she is a one click author for me.

This book is insta-lust and Connor and Paisley can’t stop thinking about each other from the very beginning.

Connor and Paisley are supposed to ignore what happened, and yet they never even try because as soon as an opportunity presents itself, they immediately risk everything. I didn’t understand that because they both have very good reasons to at least try to avoid each other. Paisley is trying to change her circumstances in life and if they are caught, she will lose that chance. Connor stands to lose even more if he messes up, but he doesn’t seem to care.

The writing annoyed me too. Something will be hinted at without revealing anything, then the next time it’s mentioned, a little bit more will be added onto what was previously mentioned and so on. It felt like they were unfinished sentences and while I understand that the author wanted to create intrigue, it just annoyed me. This happened with

None of the side characters were likeable either. I didn’t like Floss at the beginning, but then something happens and it’s unfair that she’s the only one that gets blamed. In the first few chapters I liked Marnie, but when her behaviour starts changing, I started hating her because she’s quick to butt into other people’s business but won’t listen when valid observations are made when it comes to her own situation.

I don’t care to carry on because I don’t like any of the characters, which is making the plot annoying. I probably won’t read any other books in this series.

I liked the book. Connor definitely had some questionable actions. I understood some of them, but didn't necessarily agree. Especially the 2nd time. He didn't even get the answers he set out for not that he tried that hard but he for sure took advantage another way. Just check your triggers. There were times he was sure of himself and his role despite not wanting to be immersed in the family crime, he still grew up in it. Sometimes it seemed like it, othertimes he came off like a low level newbie grunt who needed someone else to tell him what to do and how. I kind of understood Paisley and her trying to keep her drama away from Connor, but after she found out about him and his family and she knew she was in over her head, I didn't get keeping it secret and letting things keep going from bad to worse. I was kind of hoping for a surprise baby resulting from the 1st time. I know it was already alot going on and hurdles to get through but it would have added another interesting layer, especially after he was disappointed to find out she was on BC. I also would have liked more resolve for both their traumas. Them to see these people and confront them or something. Him with his ex, her moreso, with her family and past, but also, there was only minor lingering feelings after James. I liked brook and Harrison as side characters, he was like a protective big brother which helped with some of what was happening. I also hope to see more of Patrick and maybe see if he ends up with floss or what his story is. Marnie tried to be a good friend but was caught up, not sure how deep it went but hopefully she gets a hea as well. Things got kind of muddled and chaotic towards the end and the mfc wasn't the only one a bit confused. Overall good read. Paisley is a scholarship student at Kingswood Queens High School. She has a few friends (Floss, Brooke and Marnie) who she tries to keep up with, but has to do a few “not so legal” things to get some extra money. Going out before the new semester starts, the girls end up at a bar and the entrance fee is too much for Paisley to pay, so Connor (who is in line behind her) offers to pay. Once inside the club, Paisley and Connor flirt, and end up out in the alley behind the club. What a time these two had – only to realize the bartender had roofied Paisley. Connor gets to be a bit protective of Paisley and takes her back to his place while he goes and takes care of the bartender. Paisley awakes and leaves before he gets back.

To everyone’s surprise when they walk into class and who is the new teacher – none other than Connor. What no one knows is that Connor is not who he says he is, and is looking for information. However, he can’t stop thinking about Paisley and how she is everything he wants! Buckle up, the fun is just starting. Marnie has a boyfriend (James) who Paisley doesn’t feel right about. When James starts using knowledge about Paisley against her, Paisley does the only thing she can – ask Connor for help.

Will Connor and Paisley be able to stay away from each other? Or will Connor find a way to manipulate this into his favor? There are some twists and turns, suspense, violence, blackmail, passion, trauma, and some kink! I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series!

Wow. This book.
So many possible TRIGGERS.
(Please read warnings on author’s website if you have limits.)
Taboo age-gap/teacher-student romance with all sorts of dark; noncon, dubcon, roofies, abuse, blackmail, forced situations, murder, you name it… BUT told in a way that infuses and moves the plot, not just for sensationalism. This author knows what she’s doing and spins a web you can’t escape from, until the very last page.
Paisley escapes her abusive family with a scholarship to an elite boarding school. She sells fake IDs and essays to get money for extra living expenses. Everything is going smoothly until she goes to a club with her friends. Not having enough money for the cover, the hot guy in line behind her, helps her out. Seeing him watching her while she dances, sends heat through her but she’s sworn off guys. Meeting a hot guy is the least of her problems, though as things start to spiral out of control.
What a ride! Not overly dramatic, just a good story! The writing is fantastic. The surroundings and situations are described so vividly, you swear you can see them. The characters are realistic and could be someone you know. You actually care about these characters and worry what’s going to happen. I couldn’t wait to get back to it! I do wish the ending plot twist would have wrapped up with more information (no spoilers here) but the epilogue was very satisfying. I’ll definitely be reading more books by Layla Simon.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Conner, the enigmatic and complex antihero, stole my heart with his intriguing personality. His journey throughout the book kept me hooked, and I couldn't help but be drawn to his mysterious charm. The exploration of unconventional desires added an exciting twist to the story, making it an unforgettable reading experience.

Paisley, the strong and determined female lead, brought depth and authenticity to the narrative. Her resilience in the face of challenges made her a compelling character, and I found myself rooting for her throughout the book. While some of her reactions felt slightly unrealistic, it didn't diminish the overall impact of her character.

The chemistry between Conner and Paisley was undeniable, and their forbidden romance was filled with passion and tension.

Layla's writing style is engaging and immersive, allowing me to lose myself in the world she created. However, there were moments when certain sentences, particularly those using slang, required a bit more effort to read and understand.

The storyline itself was captivating, with its focus on the illicit relationship between teacher and student. However, I must admit that I would have loved to see a bit more exploration of the crime family involvement, which was mentioned frequently but not fully integrated into the plot.

Huge fan of Layla Simon. Huge.

This one gave me whiplash and bags under my eyes as I sat up into the early hours unable to put it down.

When the poor girl and a rich kid's school - Paisley - meets hotter than a GQ model, Conner at a club the trajectory of her life changes forever.

There are some deeply disturbing triggers throughout this book so heed the author's very transparent warnings.

Convinced her night was a once in a lifetime hook up Paisley is floored when she discovers that her unforgettable white knight ,Conner, is now her new English teacher.

This is far from a taboo college student/professor romance though. This is a Layla Simon book and Conner has secrets... oh does Conner have secrets.

This is a plot rich, steamy as hell read with shocks at every turn. The latter part of the book literally gave me a headache as I battled to keep up.

There are some amazingly crafted side characters whom I presume will get their own stories too.

My one beef is that I found Conner an enigma throughout and never felt I fully engaged with him but the book, as always by this author, is so well written I almost didn't care.

Addictive stuff.

Heat: 3.5/5

**Mind your TWs because there is noncon/dubcon in this!!** YOU’VE BEEN WARNED.

Paisley is a super smart girl from the wrong side of the tracks at Kingswood College, and Connor is the hot guy behind her in line for the club. A one night stand. A hazy, drugged memory. A walk of shame the morning after. Turns out, Connor is the new English teacher. HER English teacher. Oops?

Age gap, forbidden, and teacher/student are a few of my favorite tropes. Throw them together with a dash of blackmail, a sprinkle of Dubcon/noncon, and a hint of somno - I’m set to drooling.

Layla Simon quite possibly writes some of the best spice I’ve read. Her writing never fails to get me super hot and bothered. There are plenty of spicy moments in the story: the unexpected ones were my favorites🤤😅 While the story starts slow, things quickly heat up between Paisley and Connor, and despite the age gap, they are so cute together.

Paisley’s got a few other things going on in the background that come to a thrilling head, which I was not expecting and loved. The author knows how to ratchet up the plot tension and keep things interesting.

Layla has this gift of giving you all these emotions to be felt in just one book. I got angry, frustrated, sad, happy, giddy, heartbroken, in love, and so much more. I don't know how she does it, but she does every single book and this one is no exception.

The story line is amazing as always, it's not just spice. It has so much more, it just sucks you in. I didn't want to put it down, I didn't wanna stop reading and so I didn't. I finished it in one go. And I absolutely loved it from start to finish. Her characters are always so much more complex then what you first get to know about them. Their character growth is phenomenal. She doesn't give you a chance, you just automatically fall in love with them.

Always check trigger warnings because it again deals with real and raw stuff that can be very triggering but that is also the beauty of her writing.

Paisley has a one night stand, that it so much more than just that but then she finds out it's her new teacher. The tension between them is so strong that they can't stay away from each other. It's such a great story from beginning till end. Absolutely beautiful.

It took me a little bit to get into this book, but once I did it got really good- and quick! I loved Connor and Paisley. And oh my gosh did they burn the sheets up!
At first I was a little put off that Connor still had all his ex wife’s stuff in his house, even after he started developing feelings for Paisley. And I was shocked when he offered her his ex’s clothes for her to wear and she took them! I was like no Paisley! Connor definitely had a few kinks that I thought were hot!
I enjoyed the side characters and am really surprised that Brooke and Harrison might not be together in the next book. He seemed so protective and caring with Brooke, and even great with Paisley. What I am crossing my fingers for is Floss and Patrick getting a story! I sensed a little attraction in the end and am curious to see what happens.
One thing I was hoping for by the end was a surprise pregnancy. After all those wild and steamy scenes I was certain Paisley would be pregnant. So I was a little disappointed she wasn’t.
I enjoyed this book, and although there are some dark elements, I didn’t find it to be really dark. But definitely check TW’s at the beginning.

This book has some good parts and some weird parts. Paisley and Conner meet at a night club when she can't get in because she doesn't have enough funds to get in . A few days later she finds out he is her new English teacher ,and things go from shocker to hot within minutes. Conner has been told by his uncle that he needs to take a job as a teacher to get dirt on some people so he can repay a debt ,but when he find out that paisley is a student there he find that might not be as easy as he thought ,and may not be able to go through with that plan. Conner love affair with paisley goes unnoticed for a while ,and then we jump a few weeks ahead when paisley friends boyfriend comes into the picture and blackmailed her things start to go from bad to worse before they get better .Conner finds out what is going on and that is when the book really gets some action where you want to find out what will happen next the only problem is after this we jump again .. I will read the next book to see if it jumps like this one . Conner and Paisley book was a good read and one to look at .

I love forbidden romance books, and this one is no exception! Paisley attends an elite private school, with a bunch of rich kids, she happened to win a scholarship. Before school starts again, Paisley’s friend convince her to go out to a club. Paisley and a friend make a bet on who can get a beautiful stranger. Paisley ends up going home with the stranger, never expecting to see him again, so imagine the surprise when she finds out the stranger is her new teacher…..

This book had twists and turns I didn’t expect. I was hooked from chapter one. Paisley is strong, and sassy! Connor is an alphahole and I loved it.

Paisley uses a fake ID to sneak into a bar with her friends - Marnie, Brooke, and Floss - where she meets Conner and the two have sex together. It turns out the next day that Conner is her English teacher, but he actually goes by Ivan. He manipulates Paisley into keeping their encounter at the bar a secret and they continue their relationship. Other things happen that cause Paisley to be in danger.

I liked the forbidden teacher-student aspect of the story, but with the mafia plot and the separate stalking plot, it was just too much. I also thought it was a little stupid of Paisley to not tell a member of the mafia about the stalking, but her reasoning made sense with who she was as a character. Nevertheless, I did like the book and the next book looks interesting, but I can't wait for Floss' story, especially if it's with her stepbrother.

DEFINITELY read the trigger warnings before reading this book. It is intense.

If you have a praise, kink read this book like rn. The smut was amazing but the plot not so much. It is a very good book to get you out of a reading slump, but there was zero climax or a plateau. It was just a steady line of plot that you could’ve seen a mile away and the ending was deeply unsatisfying. The man was drool worthy, but there was zero grovel or any kind of slow burn. I like that he fell at first sight, but I felt like it was a little too much. I feel like you either have to be that guy or not be that guy and he didn’t know which one he wanted to do and that was not really my thing, but he was very hot!!!. The teacherxstudent trope was not really a trope in this book. I don’t really know how to categorize the trope in this book whatsoever and that says a lot. I also did not really like the authors writing but she was spectacular at writing smut and I admire that. Very mid read. Craving a gothic dark romance slow burn after this.

I thought this book was so good! I definitely liked the spice in the book! I definitely recommend to read! This story starts off with Paisley and her friends going out before school starts with fake ID’s to get into a club! On the way into the club she didn’t have enough money for the club a guy behind paid for her it was the guy she was talking about! As the night went on she talked to the guy after her friends leave the club. As they leave they sleep together and she goes back to his place and she wakes up and she goes home. When they go back to school she sees him again only to find out he is her teacher and he finds out her age and she also has a different name. I love how they got together and the problems they had to go through but through everything they both fell in love and now they are happy living their life!

I saw a lot of people hyping this book up on Facebook, so I decided to take it for a spin... Overall, I did enjoy the book. However, there are several things that I saw as "flaws."
First, I am not a fan of insta-love. I get sexual attraction but to be possessive after one hook up and then in love by week 5, maybe 6??? *gag*
Next, I didn't like Paisley's character... She was just super naive and kinda whiney, in my opinion. She was soooo happy about Conner putting a bartender in the hospital after trying to roofie her; yet Conner takes advantage of her while on said drug and she finds that appealing because Conner "trusts her to do what he really wants to make his fantasies come to life." Psssst, why is the bartender a predator but Conner is *swoon*. It just rubbed me the wrong way.
It was a quick little read that had a few spicy sex scenes, but overall, not my favorite.
