About the author

Leopold von Ranke was a German historian, considered one of the founders of modern source-based history. Ranke set the tone for much of later historical writing, introducing such ideas as reliance on primary sources (Empiricism), an emphasis on narrative history and especially international politics (Aussenpolitik).

This is a very good book if you want to find out about the deeds or misdeeds of the Renaissance Popes.

The copy I found was 2 volumes of narrative with a third of relevant documents.

The popes in question are the Renaissance popes, mainly of the 16th and 17th centuries, but the important 15th century popes also have their place. The history of the counter reformation is woven throughout the book, and includes an excellent (and very interesting) short history of the Jesuits, and all their missions to the far east.

I did not find exactly what I was looking for here, but it's very well written, and I shall certainly use it again whenever I need to look up a pope.
