Massive thanks to the author, publisher, and Hidden Gems for the advanced read. Below are my honest opinions.
Do yourself a favor and skip to the last couple pages of this book. There should be a family tree - study it and commit it to memory and then start reading.
A renowned fingerprint analyst, Toma, is tasked with aiding in a Russian (possible) murder case, that inadvertently ties in with her own family history. Toma must then decide how to move forward with the new information she has regarding her family, and her case.
What makes this book stand out is the fact that the plot is incredibly far-fetched, without crossing over into magic/fantasy territory. The odds of being assigned to a case that ends up answering most of the questions someone has surrounding their family's history is wild. But the author made it work.
Similar to other readers, I struggled to grasp the "who's who" in the beginning of the story. There are quite a few time jumps and characters do change names. And with the time jumps not being chronological, I became incredibly confused within the first couple chapters.
But as you read on, characters become more familiar and thus, easier to place. And a reader is left with a fascinating tale of love, revenge, friendship, and betrayal. I wasn't a fan of how certain aspects of the story that seemed incredibly important - the resolution to the case - were just skimmed over. Nevertheless, I was intrigued to read how Toma resolved not just the case, but the pending questions she had in her personal life.
Overall, a decent read.

The black seagull is a captivating story about a Russian family and its close friends. Although I expected to read a mystery story or a detective story, this book is actually about unfolding the mystery of the history of heroine's family. Each story has several points of view, and one must choose which angle to believe.
The story ties together Russian and Israeli culture, in a way which is familiar to new immigrants from the Soviet Union on the one hand, and opens an accessible window to people from the west, on the other. Psychology also plays a role in the mysteries of history.

A novel that explores how family secrets impact not only those who keep the secrets but others in the family as well. Told in two timelines and multiple viewpoints, the story tells of discrimination against Jews in post-WWII Russia and their lives as immigrants in Israel. It will keep you guessing about what really happened until the very end.

תמרה הייתה נשואה לאיתן, אך היא הייתה זאת שבחרה להתגרש. היא אף הכירה לאיתן את החברה שלה. תמרה ואיתן על אף שהם גרושים עדיין חברים.
בין לבין בספר יש מעבר חוץ מישראל ורוסיה גם שיקגו.
פרופסור ג'פרי ליברסון, היה לאחד מראשי המחלקה הצעירים ביותר באוניברסיטת שיקגו. תמרה אטיאס סיימה התשלמות אצלו שנה קודם.
כאשר משטרת רוסיה מבקשת את עזרתו בחקירת רצח של אשתו של קצין בכיר בצי הרוסי, הוא מפנה את התיק לגידי קוהנר.
תמרה אטיאס היא גרושה עם ילד, ומהלת רומן עם השכן שלה, אפרים בעוד הוא נשוי.
אפרים נותן לה זמן לחשוב אם היא עדיין רוצה אותו או לא מתי שהיא תהיה ברוסיה.
תמרה אטיאס היא מומחית לזיהוי פלילי. כבר בגיל 27 היא הפכה להיות מפקדת מעבדה תחת פיקודו של גידי.
כאשר גידי מביא לה משימה בעלת סיווג גבוה. בעקבות ידיעת השפה הרוסית היא קיבלה את התיק.

מקרה הרצח שהיא הולכת לחקור ברוסיה זה חקירת רצח בעלת חשיבות עליונה ברוסיה; תת אדמירל הוא החשוד המרכזי כאשר אישתו נמצאת בנהר ועל גופה מכתב התאבדות. מכיוון שעבודת המז"פ הייתה רשלנית ולא נלקחו טביעת אצבע תמרה אמורה לנסוע לרוסיה ולחקור את המקרה וגם לפתור את עניין זיהוי של טביעת אצבע.
במהלך שהותה ברוסיה, תמרה נזכרת בעבר, ואף נזכרת באירוע שהדחיקה מזכרונה.
היא מגלה סודות שקשורים לקרוביה ולמשפחתה, דברים שלא נחשפה אליהם בכלל, ויש משהו שהיא כן נחשפה אליו "שחף שחור" שהוסבר לה ברוסיה מה ההקשר לזה.
הפרקים הם קצרים, והכריכה מדהימה. בין לבין יש מכתבים בין רעיה וגליה, האחיות; בין רוסיה וישראל.

It was a bit hard to follow the timeline since it kept bouncing between one and another. There were too many characters to keep track of. I often found myself losing track of family association. Some occasions, I couldn’t tell if certain characters were related to each other. I feel there was really no climax in the story. I feel as if though the author did not have anything to offer in the story. Maybe a second go at it will yield better appreciation of the story. Maybe some note taking, too. I will update review when I reread it.

both the mystery and the family drama aspects of the book work very well. The juggling of the romance and crime-solving never felt sudden or awkward, and even though the two timelines were sometimes confusing, It was easily solved.
The conflicts, interactions, and the character writing overall is fantastic, and it all feels very real.
The concept of an old family mystery slowly revealed is intriguing, I felt as if my eyes were glued to the paper.
Overall, I enjoyed reading it, and it even left me with some questions I'd like to ask my own family, about our history and story.

I enjoyed this book so much, even though it's not strictly speaking my genre, which only tells you just how good it is. It has everything you can wish for, a bit of suspense, a bit of romance, and a lot of "I can't put this book down". It's the author's first book, and I can't wait for the next one!

I was disappointed. The writing was poor; it would have been better to read a translation from the original Hebrew by a native English speaker. I found the narrative switching between so many characters moving back and forth in time was confusing and distracting,
