Rate this book
Exploring the globe since 1888: A journey through time with the world&;s favorite magazine   Limited edition of 125,000 copies worldwide!
For five generations,  National Geographic magazine has dazzled and educated people with its incredible photographs, illustrations, and gripping stories from the four corners of the earth. Combining travel, wildlife, science, history, culture, and conservation, the National Geographic Society&;s trailblazing magazine has inspired millions of readers to explore and take an interest in the planet we inhabit. Now, in celebration of its 125th anniversary, National Geographic has given TASCHEN complete access to its archives to distill the journey of a lifetime into three prodigious volumes featuring photographs&;many unpublished&;almost as rich, deep, and colorful as the world itself .

Our trans-continental trip starts in the Americas and Antarctica (Volume 1); we then cross the Atlantic to Europe and Africa (Volume 2); and finally sail the Indian Ocean to Asia and Oceania (Volume 3). From evocative early black-and-white pictures to autochromes, from the golden age of Kodachromes to digital, National Geographic invented the aesthetic of the photo essay, while pushing the technical boundaries of the medium. Readers will discover how the magazine evolved from presenting a romantic view of the world&;subjects posed and smiling&;to edgier stories reflecting political turmoil, social issues, and environmental threats. Of course, the journey would not be complete without prime examples of the magazine&;s revered groundbreaking underwater and wildlife photography, so we&;ve included plenty of such treasures as well. This world class set is a cultural investment to be cherished, shared, and passed down to future generations.

My physical book buying has taken a dramatic shift. I prefer to read on a Kindle because I don't like piles of read books in my place. I thought they'd look nice on a bookshelf, but they really don't because I was buying remainders mostly. Kindles are really crappy for photography though, or anything visual outside of text. I sold about 7 boxes of books in 2014 to lighten my load.

I now look for books that actually look nice on a bookshelf, plus they have great visual content. I have been buying Library of America for 5 years and might still pick up a few more. I have about 15 or 20 classic titles and these all look nice, are great content and the price is right.

This is my first book by Tachen though. My intention is to pass it down through generations. It's $500 at retail, but I think I got it for $270 by using a 20% off coupon at Barnes and Noble and it was already discounted from retail.

I really, really like them. My kids have spent time with them. My daughter had the set on her Christmas list, though I gave it to the family. I know that I appreciate them more at 47 though than I would at other ages because of the context I can understand the pictures in. The picture of the Italian New York City Deli in 1982, "Foggaccaria" is an example, plus pictures from the 70's, 60's and 50's with the clothes, hairdo and hats are all things my 12 years old's aren't going to appreciate in the same way. There's an amazing picture of a native Indian in an Ecuadorean jungle over an open fire looking half crazed and drugged. It's amazing because you'd think it was from 1908, but it's from 2008.

The books seem to weigh about 75 pounds together.

I'll probably look at more Tachen books now. Maybe I'll get into collecting more valuable physical books for fun and keep reading literature on my Kindle.

Wanted some eye candy and found this collection.
For quiet times when you just want to sit down and turn some pages, taking imaginary journeys through a world that is not just fiction.

The book represents the best of the TASCHEN tradition.
Lovingly created/curated, with both the physical attributes and the content matching my expectations.

Warning: heavy. Like you-need-to-have-a-big-male-of-the-species-around-to-handle-the-box heavy. Not something you just casually walk out with from a bookstore.
