19-year-old Emily desperately wants a name for what she is. For what is consuming and torturing her. For what is changing her.

But she’s not crazy like her mother. She’s not.

Emily may not be as crazy as she thinks, because her body is no longer her own. Something is stirring inside her. It is soft, seductive, and tells her what to do to survive. As Emily learns that her world has been infected by demons that consume human souls and fit seamlessly into the bodies they empty, she must also accept that she is one of them. Yet, she is different from the rest, because her darkness didn’t inhabit her, it was awakened.

And Emily must choose a side.

Great start to a series. Ketley Allison has a great debut novel here! The main character, Emily, is a young woman trying to make it on her own in the big city. While her best friend, Macy (who seems a bit shallow at first but grow on you), is living an easier life of college, parties, etc, Emily is stuck working two jobs just to struggle still to make ends meet.

One day, Emily's life is flipped upside down when Macy's boyfriend transforms into a monster and attacks her. Yet something inside Emily knows how to handle it and soon he is dead. When Macy friends Emily she is alone. No body, no blood...nothing. Emily soon finds herself in a world full of demons. One such demon tells her she is one of them. Or is she? For Emily can do more than other demons...

Emily also meets Asher, who she is drawn to, an his sister Gwyn. These two have secrets of there own. I must say, I could not stand Gwyn. She is just plain cruel and nasty! Asher on the other hand I couldn't decide one way or another. Being the book was all from Emily's perspective it was a little jaded. While there is a romantic element, there is no major romance in this book which was nice. While I wanted them to try and be together, it was sweet to see nothing was rushed for it, especially with everything else going on.

I felt really bad for Emily. Certain people knew more than they were sharing with her as she tries to learn about herself. I could not imagine going through what she goes through all alone. Although this is partly her own fault as she too is not truthful with others. Guess honesty is a two-way street here.

The book started off a bit slow for me and it took awhile until I could get into it. Yet once the pace picks up it doesn't slow down again even for a minute. It keeps you guessing who or what Emily is, dropping partial hints throughout the book. It was a fun thing to do while reading. Yet none of the hints give everything away, so you aren't stuck fully knowing what is going on until Emily herself learns the truth.

The ending left me sitting still, starting at the book, willing there to be more. While the book answers the questions needed to finish, it easily leaves things open enough for a second book. This is a great book for older teens and adults alike.

You’re crazy, Em. You’re going crazy. Just like your mother.

Everything began with a party.Emily has a friend Macy. She's lunatic. But they are best friends.Emily things she's going to be crazy like her mother but she's not crazy. She's just seen things not everyone seen it.The things she can see is her Kind.In so many book we can't see deep down Demons. But because of Ketley we allow to see what real demons are.

First she find out her power, she like it. She use it on Macy and the other humans. When she made a eye contact and thinking what she'll going to do,exactly she do it on the time. It's like a trance.Demon trance. Her soul like the demon power. But there's a one thing...if she going to use her power all the time on humans she can caught to Hunter.

I was no longer me.
I was the darkness.
I was evil.

Honestly I hope there's second coming up because I do not wanna be insane too...

OK, so I will admit this book has taken me a long time to read - like a few months- as certain things have got in the way and I had to put it to one side for a while. However I have finally been able to finish it over the last two days.

When the author contacted me about reviewing this book I was intrigued as she told me it was a NA paranormal novel. As most NA around right now include romance, it caught my interest. I'm also a big fan of darker novels and this is what Dark Souls seemed to promise with both the blurb and the title. It was definitely at the darker end of the paranormal scale but now that I have read it, I would say it would better classed as a book aimed at the upper YA market.

The start of this book intrigued me. It built up questions nicely that developed the suspense and tension about who and what everyone was. It also created a good relationship between Emily and Macy. I liked their friendship and I could relate to Emily's situation when being dragged out by friends. It was believable and set the book up well.

I read the first 30% with no problems at all and I found myself wanting to read on. However, after that I felt the book didn't hook me as well and, unlike other books, I know exactly why: the secrets were left hanging too long. Most of the problems I had with this book stemmed from that reason as rather than receive answers to move the story on quicker, I felt things dragged a little and I just grew to dislike Emily. For me she didn't do enough to find anything out for herself and I just couldn't sympathise with her in any way as she fought a the battle with her demon. I found her to be too isolated and shut off which, for me, created a cold character that you don't want to vouch for.

Saying that Dark Souls did pick up again but it wasn't until the 80% mark did I find myself wanting to read more. Once Emily found out what she was everything started to become better as there was another element to the story than just "what am I?" However, once Emily's character is revealed, everything else became kind of obvious as to who Asher and Gwyn were and what was going to happen.

Personally, I would have liked the reveal to come earlier and then learn about Emily's demon side even more as things like the powers were a little underdeveloped. I feel that if this had happened then there would have been more depth to the book and allowed for a more climatic ending.

Overall though, although Dark Souls didn't connect with me, paranormal fans might enjoy this, especially if you're into darker fiction. The relationships are believable, the start is tense and I liked the different take on demons that aren't related to Hell. I thought the way the author portrayed them was interesting. Dark Souls shows the potential this author has but I feel the structure and pacing of the book needs a bit of work to develop certain aspects and add more depth so it can be a great read.

Whoa ... whoa ... whoa ... Stop the presses ... No, start those babies up!

I'm not even certain where to begin. Do I begin with the awesome idea of this unknown entity ... the mystery of the Hunter ... the pain and agony Ems goes through. But this isn''t your normal run of the mill fantasy. It stands out, bringing to light the internal struggles of this young woman trying to survive after a life of torment. Ems grasps a hold of the light in her life even as she spirals into this unknown world.

The world is based upon our modern world. There's different forms or abilities that each type of monster seems to wield. Entwined into this is the Tribune (Chaser, Catcher, Hunter) who hunt them down. The idea of this living amongst us is quite fascinating and Ketley Allison did a wonderful job at bringing it too life without the dreaded info dumps typically witnessed in the genre.

Emily (Ems) gosh, I fell in love with her. Her pain and ache became real, and I felt it ripple through me. She could be any one of us or anyone we know. She survived a very trying childhood and embraces her friend, boss, and her aunt. The human side of her is a mirror of how most of us would react. Well done on her -both sides- of her, and I hope her story continues. Asher ... He's not your average "book boyfriend" in fact he's not anyone's boyfriend. He gets under my skin though, but I'm a no spoilers type of gal. But he's pretty darn real with how men tend to react in the real world. He'll make nice eye candy, and at times you almost think he cares, but then he becomes the ice king. I understand why he does this but I can't tell you. He's still a very intriguing and complex character that I can't wait to see develop.

This isn't a love story, although the series may develop into one in the future, but it really doesn't need it. The tension between Asher and Ems is enough to fuel your inner rumor mill and to draw some conclusions - which I love. This is also a darker themed fantasy, but completely suitable for YA, NA, and of course adult readers.

Ketley Allison's writing is a fresh and welcome change. She wasn't afraid to delve into the darker depths of humanity. I enjoy fearless writing, because it's an art form that needs to breathe and mold as the author sees fit. Can't wait to read more.

" I am not crazy I am not crazy I am not crazy"

Emily refuses to be crazy like her mother. But after a strange encounter with her best friend's boyfriend and finding out the next day that he does not exist makes her question her sanity. From then on things go from strange to bad really quickly. Emily has to face her inner demons and figure out just what is going on with her world.

"I'm not my darkness. I'm me, I'm Emily."

Wow this book is so fantastic I had to put a clapping gif for it. Unique, fun and interesting. This book really had me hooked from page one. I loved how different this book was, from the way the demons interact, the concept of the Trinity. I loved that there was enough mystery to keep me guessing what's going to happen next, but still a little predictable where I was able to guess right in one or two things. I love Ems characters, she is strong and when things got bad for her rather then cower she made smart choices, chose to remain strong, she didn't want to be weak. I loved that she fought the darkness to remain true to herself. I had a love hate relationship with Asher, his hot and cold moods just annoyed me. I loved the tension and connection between Asher and Emily. This book is fast paced and there was never a dull moment.

Trust me when I say this is a must read. So put this on your TBR list and put it towards the top, you'll be glad you did. With that being said I highly recommend this book and its worth the 5 of 5 stars!

I was provided with a free copy of this book for the blog tour. Thank you!

When I read the synopsis of the ‘Dark Souls’ I was immediately attracted by the premise of this book. An unkown entity? It sounds awesome, right?

I had a lot of expectations from this book. In some ways, it has exceeded my expectations. In other ways, it disappointed me.

The best thing about this book is the mysery. Even from the start, there’s one question that makes you turn the page: ‘What is going on with Emily?’ This question made me go crazy sometimes. I was soooooooooo curious!

I say it again, the idea of this book is amazing! An unkown entity stirring inside of you? It’s very original, even though it made me think of ‘The Host’ sometimes. But oh my, I say it again, I loved this idea!! I would’ve liked to find out more about all the monsters ior entities that Ketley created.

Emily…. Amazing character! Her power and determination and her personality amazed me and made me love her. I felt sorry for her sometimes. But my my, she is one hell of a character! You’ll see, you’ll love her!

Asher annoyed the hell outta me sometimes. He was so cold, yet so hot! He’s one of those guys that are hot, but untouchable.

The tension between Asher and Emily was palpable. I loved the fact that this isn’t a love story. It’s a myserty story about a girl that tries to find herself and to find out what she truly is.

My biggest problem with this book was that sometimes it bored me. Too many long description that made me tired.

Oh, another thing that I loved was Ketley ability to delve into the darker depths of humanity without being ridiculous or without making me cringe.

Overall, ‘Dark Souls’ is a read that I enjoyed. It has many great things and it’s a book that YA, NA and adul readers can enjoy. I definitely recommend it!

I rate this book with 4 stars. I wanna mention that the GoodReads rating was a mistake. I didn’t actually mean to rate it with 3 stars. My finger slipped on the pad and I saw it just now.

I love new fun books! Especially when the keep me interested from the start. You’ve got demons attacking, and the supposed to be human girl they attack all of a sudden attack back, and all kinda crazy, all the while not even knowing what she is. With some excellent plotting and a wonderfully intriguing cover to add to it’s appeal, I am definitely now a new fan of this author and her debut.

Poor Emily, she really does think she’s going crazy, like her mom. This are just not supposed to be like this, as she’s fought so hard to hold on to what little she has left. She really does have a lot to deal with, especially when the hot guy shows up. Emily talks about her self as having both good and evil inside her, and that’s made for such an interesting look into a main character. I think this is what I loved about her. I felt that she was so engaged and it made you, the reader, engage in the story even more.

Asher is pretty hot. He’s mysterious, he’s the new guy who just shows up, and he’s got secrets of his own, and he’s got a twin :) I would love to tell you so many things about him, but the author did such an excellent job at keeping the secrets and letting thing be revealed that I would totally ruin the book if I did that. Let me just say that you’ll either love him or hate him, and I won’t tell you which I feel :) Heh, me and my teasers!

In the moment of plot twists and total shock value, this book is excellent! I am well amazed right now. I am also not sure how to describe it. I think I would go with a fantasy mystery, as there is paranormal, but not really romance, there’s fantasy, but not too outrageous, and there’s a lot to figure out as you go. But I will label it as almost any age because I have a feeling that a LOT of readers would enjoy this book! I am really excited to learn so much more and I really can’t wait for book two. PLEASE tell me book two won’t make me wait too long!!! 5 EXCELLENTLY MYSTERIOUS PAWS!

Emily must decide what to do with this newfound strength and powers of hers after discovering that she has a Demon inside of her. She learns that the Demon inside of her was always there to begin with and that its evil, yea, but it is also helping her to survive. Now she must choose what side she is on for something more evil that Demons are stirring.

Emily is one tough cookie. Frustrating at times because she is just full force ahead and doesn’t think things through but who wouldn’t when no one will tell her what she is. Asher on the other hand is full on mysterious, sexy, and alluring. Makes you wonder what makes him tick and what he is thinking. Another amazing character, which doesn’t get enough credit, is Derek, he helps Emily when she has no one else to turn to and someone that brings some lightheartedness into the story.

At times the book is a little slow going and you are constantly trying to find out what Emily really is and who is the mysterious Hunter. It feels like it takes FOREVER to get the answers we so desperately seek but not till we are close to the end do we get them and when we do it’s BAM! BAM! BAM! Right in a row! There are epic battle/fight scenes, inner struggles, and a forlorn love. You get a couple of amazing twists that have you going WHAT?! and an ending that leaves you needing to know what happens next.

This is a good read for those that enjoy Paranormal / Demon stories and would like a new take on them. I will most defiantly be grabbing the next installment to see what happens.

***Spoilers***
In Dark Souls Emily struggles with coming to terms with the fact that she lives in a world with Demons. And that she is one. One night at a party that her best friend Macy forces her to go to, Emily is attacked by a Demon that is in the body of Macy's boyfriend. When his skin comes in contact with hers they both get burned, literally, as Emily's own demon awakens. Throughout the entire book Emily tries to find someone that can tell her what she is, meanwhile she has hopes that she is hunter.

Towards the beginning I was kinda confused and thought this might be a book about vampires, because of the was Emily kept staring at Asher's neck. Glad I was wrong. I loved this book. Emily is an awesome character and not just because she has a great name :) I was sucked into this book from the first page and couldn't put it down. I loved the children demons, also known as a Leiche. They were awesomely creepy. Derek was diffidently untrustworthy from the start, I understand that he was Emily's only source of information, but it was still frustrating that she trusts him and then he turns her over to the Leiches. The only thing I would add to this story would be more romance, if I had more I would've given it all 5 stars. Can't wait to read book 2!

I didn't quite connected with this book, I thought the story processed very slow. At one point E will finally learning about her identity, we had to read through this old demon going around circle, and pretty much repeating herself for a while till she finally spit out. (And boy I was really losing patient there)

There really aren't much of romance so when E bagged what's his face, I didn't feel anything either.

Beside I found it odd that E was alive after one situation, and the siblings didn't questioned it?? If they suspected she was something else, weren't they saw the proof at that time? It was kind of odd.

I got a free copy of this on ohfb and didn't expect such a good read. It's a solid 4 star read, more accurately 4.25 . The book has a unique storyline and superb pacing and I am at a complete loss as to why a few reviewers found it slow as I would say the pacing was very even throughout and I would describe it as steady in the best sense of the word. At the very end I was left a bit confused and am wondering where the author can go next. Is it a series or was it stand alone? Very definitely worth reading and suitable for adults and teens alike as it is very much PG rated apart from a certain amount of violence.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I don't want to give too much away because there are many surprises throughout the book. In Dark Souls, the characters felt so real. They would be friends you might have hung out with and you could really connect with many of the struggles that the main character goes through. I love that the main character is a strong woman and is determined to find out about herself. This book is full of suspense and fantastic action scenes. The potential romance between two of the main characters made me eager to read the next one. Can't wait to get my hands on it!

This was definitely a unique book. The thought that you're going crazy, because things like this just don't happen is exactly what I would think if I were in Emily's shoes. Strange things happening all around her. This book is full of the unexpected happening. From Emily trying to figure out who and what she is, to Asher and his sizzling hotness and how they react to each other. Then there's all the action. Fantastic! Ketley does a great job with this book, and I can't wait to see what's in store next. 4 1/2 stars.

I was given a copy of this book in return for an honest review.

Wow!!!

I thought this novel was outstanding!! I love the conflict used between Emily and the Cambion inside of her, and the use of suspense during battle scenes. I highly recommend others read this novel if you want a great suspense novel.
