Há muito tempo eu não lia um livro que me prendia de tal forma, como aconteceu com o Ruby in the Dust - O amor numa xícara de chá . Ele é o típico livro onde nada é exatamente como parece ser. Primeiro que Alex é o bad boy menos bad que eu já vi. hahahhahaha Confesso, que no inicío, eu o achei metido, prepotente e fiquei com raiva dele. Mas a cada página, Alex vai desnudando sua alma para nós, mostrando que por baixo de toda aquela beleza (sim, ele é MTO lindo) e prepotência, existe uma mente brilhante, cheia de medos e inseguranças; um cara super fofo que só precisava encontrar algo que o inspirasse e que se tornasse a razão da vida dele. Boa parte do livro é focada em Alex, e com isso a gente consegue ter um panorama do cara fofo (já disse o quanto ele é fofo?) e engraçado ele é.

 



Com o decorrer da leitura, vamos conhecendo Nicky, uma alemã de ótimo coração, que tem no seu café um ideal de vida: fazer o bem às pessoas. A Nicky foi para o Reino Unido aos 15 anos, fugida da Alemanha, e lá ela assume uma nova identidade como forma de esconder o seu segredo. Ela supera as dificuldades(do idioma, do preconceito por ser estrangeira, por não ter estudo) e com muita leitura e um "espírito" iluminado, Nicky consegue ser a luz do Ruby in the Dust e transformá-lo num local onde as pessoas passam momentos realmente felizes.

Por falar em segredo, ( não eu não vou contar! ) o segredo de Nicky é realmente chocante. E no momento que eu comecei a entender a complexidade do segredo dela, eu comecei a me desesperar. E chorei. Chorei muito. Por ela, pelo passado, pelos seus medos, por tudo que ela teve que enfrentar para ser a mulher que ela é hoje. A cena em que ela conta a ele a verdade, foi uma das mais bonitas e sutis que eu já li na vida. Eu consegui "ver" os dois ali na minha frente, enquanto ela se abria como uma flor, pétala por pétala, para que Alex entendesse o por que eles não poderiam ficar juntos.

Quando chegamos no momento fatídico do segredo, é que entendemos que o livro é, na verdade, muito mais sobre Nicky, do que Alex, já que ele consegue chegar a um equilíbrio no meio do livro. E é a partir desse momento que Ruby in the Dust deixa de ser um livro fofo e divertido, para se tornar inesquecível.


 

O livro é repleto de mensagens positivas, de amor ao próximo e a si próprio. Ele nos faz refletir sobre nosso papel no mundo, a forma como tratamos as pessoas ao nosso redor e no quanto praticar o bem nos deixa mais próximos da felicidade. Além isso, Julie Farrell nos faz refletir muito sobre o preconceito, já que apenas quase no final do livro é que descobrimos o segredo de Nicky, e então já estamos apaixonados e é impossível não ser solidário a dor dela e não torcer para que ela consiga passar por cima dos seus medos para ficar com o seu amor.

 

Com personagens cativantes, inclusive os secundários, Ruby in the Dust é a certeza garantida de muitas risadas, devido o famoso humor britânico afiado que aparece tão bem na escrita da autora.

Terminei o livro com o coração triste, por que tinha acabado, já sentindo falta de Alex e Nicky.  <3

Eu recomendo esse livro para aquelas pessoas que gostam de ler histórias que fogem do padrão, já que o segredo de Nicky é algo que nos choca um pouco. Mas, mais do que isso, ele é um livro para se ler com o coração aberto, sem preconceitos, sem medo de entrar de cabeça e se apaixonar.

This debut novel from Julie Farrell is fun, fast-paced & inspiring, & also comes with a very unexpected twist which I certainly won't be revealing here!

Ruby in the Dust is a rather run-down café in a drab English town full of faceless corporate coffee shops, pound shops, & not much else. But its owner, Nicky, has turned this unlikely venue into something rather special, & it takes on a personality of its own as it becomes as central to this story as the leading characters themselves.

When the unsuspecting professional drop-out Alex wanders in one day (recovering from his nasty motorbike accident the night before) both their lives change overnight for the better as they discover who they really are - & both get to uncover & face up to their deepest fears & insecurities.

With her beloved Ruby in the Dust threatened by greedy developers, can Nicky let down her defences & finally discover her true self? Can Alex finally make something of his life, & show his pushy parents that he's not the waster they think he is? And can they save the café?

Julie has certainly written a gem of a novel here, & really knows how to create an inspiring & very original story. Her wonderful wordplay & descriptive language are a real hallmark & highlight of her writing - she's definitely found her own unique style of storytelling.

This is an excellent book with wide appeal, & certainly one to inspire any reader who picks it up to look at their life in a new way.
All I can say is, get yourself down to Ruby in the Dust café & drink it in, & I'm sure you'll enjoy every sip of this heart-warming story!

I recieved a copy free in exchange for an honest review. Nicky has a secret she fled Germany at fifteen and found safety in Maidenhead a sleepy English town. Her cafe Ruby in the Dust is a success. But now Maidenhead is modernizing and Corporista coffee is engulfing the town, Nicky is facing eviction because she has fallen behind on her rent. She isn't looking for love. So when Alex crashes into her life with promises to help turn her business around, she is sceptical. But there is more to Alex than Nicky knows when her nasty landlord challenges Alex to save the cafe in three months, he can't resist and they lay a bet that could cost Alex a fortune. The beginning was half dragged, I cost a little to engage in reading, but gradually the story and the characters were conquering me and began to flow better.
Ruby in the Dust has brought me good reflections, a lot of cuteness and the certainty that if life is not working, it is because we are not looking for the right prism!

Nothing like finishing a book, with that good feeling of knowing that your characters will populate my thoughts for a long time! I really enjoyed the way the author knew how to work on such an unusual and complicated subject in a light, humorous and captivating way! Highly recommend.

O livro Ruby In The Dust: O Amor Numa Xícara de Café é bem gostoso de ler, entretanto sinto que faltou algo. Algumas explicações da história dos personagens e trabalhar melhor a parte do amadurecimento do Alex foram os principais pontos que eu senti falta.
Acho válido ressaltar que se você procura uma história erótica, não encontrará neste livro. Antes de qualquer crítica que você venha fazer sobre este livro, é válido lembrar que a história retrata outros temas de uma forma simples e ao mesmo tempo gostosa, sem necessariamente focar em sexo, palavras de baixo calão ou triângulo amoroso.
Neste livro encontramos um homem perdido, não sabe o que quer para a vida e nem o que fará com ela. Pensando somente na bebida e tentando descobrir o que quer, Alex é um homem lindo e inteligente, porém sem um rumo definido na vida. Mesmo tendo cursado medicina, descobriu que não era aquilo que queria e acabou dependente dos pais e não usando realmente sua inteligência para nada, apenas se afogando em álcool.
Já Nicky é uma mulher forte, batalhadora, além de ser carismática e ótima conselheira, mas com um segredo que ela cresceu ouvindo ser abominável e começou a julgar realmente ser algo horrível demais, por isso escolheu viver sem um companheiro, apenas cuidando de seu sobrinho e tocando o seu café, Ruby In The Dust.
A forma como Alex e Nicky se encontram é um tanto bobo, para ser sincera. Se conhecem no café dela, enquanto ela tenta negociar os pagamentos atrasados do aluguel com David, um corretor rico e idiota. Apesar do encontro deles ser bobo as consequências deram um rumo na vida do Alex e uma chama de esperança quanto ao seu café para a Nicky.
Creio que a partir daqui a história desenrola de uma forma meio lenta, mas ao mesmo tempo gostosa. A cada encontro deles era uma briga, mas ao mesmo tempo uma forma de aproximação para o casal. Aceitar Alex em sua vida foi um enorme sacrifício para Nicky, principalmente quando ela começou a entender que seu sentimento pelo Alex estava deixando de ser somente atração e transformando-se em paixão, mas com a barreira do seu segredo entre eles, a assombrando e afastando qualquer chance de um relacionamento com Alex. Porém ele foi insistente e quando o segredo é descoberto, foi simplesmente maravilhoso a atitude dele quanto ao que ela escondia. Mesmo que o segredo não tenha sido bem abordado, houveram pistas, usando flashes do passado para auxiliar a descoberta, mas não houve um cuidado em abordar melhor o assunto.
O livro retrata de algo que poucos abordam, além de apresentar que há um forte preconceito não só vindo da sociedade, mas também como dos próprios familiares, causando falta de auto-estima e um preconceito contra si mesmo. E também mostra que existem perdas e ganhos, que nem tudo acaba com felizes para sempre, que é necessário recomeços e que as pessoas estão cada vez mais gananciosas, passando por cima do bem-estar da população pelo dinheiro. Eu gostei de isso ser abordado de forma evidente.

A capa do livro, apesar de ser linda, faltou algo que remetesse ao tema principal do livro, o café. A imagem do casal é linda, a tipografia, apesar de ser bonita, ficou meio apagada em meio ao contraste com as cores usadas na imagem, além das linhas serem finas demais, o que tornou a leitura um pouco difícil. Mas em si, a capa é bonita, só senti falta de algo que falasse do café.
Entretanto a história é linda e gostosa de ler, com um final lindo e com a dose certa de romantismo e amadurecimento dos personagens. Ela te motiva a ler para descobrir o segredo que cerca o casal e como eles terminam, ainda querer saber o que o destino reservou para os “vilões” deste livro.
É uma leitura para se ler quando a ressaca de excesso de romances eróticos bate e você quer algo mais leve. Eu aconselho a leitura para estes momentos, principalmente.

A well written 'by the numbers' chicklet, with an unusual quirk and a positive message.

This isn't my usual sort of read. In fact, it's likely to be one of the very few books of its type that I review on the site. However the author, Julie Farrell, is been very kind in advising me on the quirks of self publishing in the run up to releasing my own novel later in the year, so buying and reading one of her novels seemed the least I could do. Thankfully, I enjoyed it. I would have felt awful if my payback for Julie's help had been writing an unfavourable review.

As you’ll see from the blurb (click the button that says ‘read author’s description’ to read it) we appear to be in the familiar realms of romantic melodrama, a term that often has bad connotations, but here I use it with respect. Julie works the genre well and adds enough twist to make it stand out from many of its contemporaries. A romance develops against the backdrop of financial troubles and an evil landlord, but as you would expect our heroes (Nicky and Alex) deal with their adversities with the right mix of emotions, humour and romance to keep us reading until the book’s end.

Stylistically the novel is light hearted and welcoming. This style, coupled with its well realised pacing, make it very easy to read. As I mentioned, this isn’t my sort of read and thus, had there been any parts in the book that I had struggled to get through I suspect I may committed the cardinal sin of stopping before the last page. Julie’s writing meant that was never an issue.

To my eye, Julie’s strength is in her characters and in particular the supporting cast. Nicky and Alex themselves are well realised and believable, as you would expect from the leads in a story, but the characters around them (in particular Alex’s mother and the staff and customers of ‘Ruby In The Dust’) are also very well thought out. More so than the physical settings of the chapters, they really flesh out the novel.

What sets this story apart from the other occasional novels in this genre I have read is the theme. This is actually where I had an issue, though not with the theme itself. Julie’s book has a message and it’s a positive one; the characters must overcome their own self doubts in order to thrive. How? By finding their own spirituality and philosophy to do so (and I stress spirituality rather than religion for those of you suddenly feeling a bit threatened). If you visit Julie’s website and watch her videos you will see (as she explains) that she herself has overcome some adversities. This understandably makes her want to pass on her message and methodology to other people, and it is within the theme where she does so. To my eye there are just a couple of occasions when the message (as channelled through Nicky’s character) is a tad heavy handed, which for a moment has the effect of making itself too noticeable and thus drawing you out of the story. The moment passes quickly, but it was at these moments that I found the myself looking up and thinking ‘I’ll go make a tea’ or similar.

The only other issue I had was the fact that the twist (or to be honest ‘quirk’ would be more accurate) of the plot is laid out a little early and with a few too many clues so that its eventual reveal has less dramatic impact than it could. That does not spoil however, as it is not a quirk that the plot hinges on.

However, these really are minor observations and certainly not ones that detract from the read as a whole. If this genre of book is your cup of tea, then do get a copy. You will enjoy the time you devote to it.

Os news adults (ou Novo Adulto em português) estão na mesma vibe de Distopia, você não quer ler, mas praticamente só esse tema tem sido publicado pelas editoras =/, a vantagem do livro de hoje é que ele não é série (outro erro desse gênero) hoje em dia são poucos livros que tem histórias para seguir séries grandes e aí acabam se tornando repetitivos.

A sinopse me encantou, mistérios, café e uma vibe mais interessante e logo fui tentar ler, mas a sinopse realmente foi escrita a dedo, porque a história fica e muito a desejar. Os personagens são bem chatinhos, contraditórios e de certa forma rasos, a autora pegou Alex seu bad boy (que de bad boy não tem nada) e o transformou em um cara chato, bêbado e irritante, chegou a um ponto que toda vez que ele aparecia eu queria que aquele capítulo terminasse logo.

Outra coisa chatinha foi o fato deles querem ser engraçadinhos, eu não tenho nada contra, adoro inclusive essas piadinhas que algumas pessoas acham que são bobas ou ‘escrotas’, mas é preciso saber escrever. E quando isso não acontece, seu personagem apenas parece aquele famoso ‘wanna be’, ou seja, aqueles que querem ser algo, mas nunca chegam lá ou conseguem.

Em termos de história, a mesma é enorme, mas não tem foco. O livro fala de um segredo, que realmente só aparece em 3/4 capítulos no máximo e isso de forma espaçada, parece que a autora tinha isso em mente, mas infelizmente não levou a história por aí e até que o tal segredo é bom, mas ficou mal posicionado e quando de fato ele aprece, você acaba não sentindo o impacto desejado por ela, ficou uma coisa corriqueira, sem graça.

O outro item interessante era o café ser minimalista e de repente a gente ter uma grande cadeia de café na cidade, esse assunto (que aparece na sinopse logo de cara), só apareceu em mais de 60% de leitura (li no kindle), ou seja, depois de mais da metade do livro falando de mil outras coisas, ela puxou o assunto que estava na sinopse e achei que iria aparecer logo. Faltou foco!

A narrativa da autora não me agradou muito, achei bem cansativa de ler, mas a ideia geral da história era boa e continuei, talvez o ritmo lento de leitura tenha sido devido as coisas mencionadas anteriormente, e com certeza isso prejudicou bastante a leitura, tem muitos pontos soltos irritantes que por mais que a gente faça vista grossa, fica difícil seguir em frente amando.

Resolvi deixar esse item por último, porque não tem a ver com erros/revisão, mas influencia na forma da leitura, sabe quando você lê aquilo em voz alta (alguma cena/passagem) e vê que a pontuação está estranha? Era para ser exclamação e está ponto final, interrogação e tem uma vírgula e coisas assim? Isso foi algo que me fez ficar em duvidas em varias cenas, tipo não entender se os personagens estavam gritando, se emocionando, perguntando e por aí vai e olha, essa coisa de pontuação trocada faz uma diferença danada na hora da leitura.

It was ok. It was too G rated for me. There was plenty of cussing, but no sex between the H & h. The heroine had a HUGE secret. When she finally told the hero, in like the last few chapters, the hero just acted like it was no big deal. It was awesome that he was okay with it, but it was just glossed over. I would have like it if she would have told him earlier in the book & they work through some things together that had to do with the secret.

It's hard to say what I really want to say because I don't want to give things away.
They only share a few kisses. I wish they would have had sex & dealt with the serious issues that were involved with the h's problem. Instead it was handled very G rated.
The way the H handled it, didn't ring true. It's like she revealed that she stole a piece of candy, when she was five. She had a HUGE secret. It effected her BIG TIME!!! This is not a secret that you wouldn't discuss & explore for hours. There is no way that a man, after being told a secret like this one, would just say, "ok, no problem, baby".

I never read a book that had a secret like this. I like when authors do that. Just wish it had more part of the story. The hero didn't find out until almost the end. They have one small discussion about it when she revealed the truth, & that's it.

First of all I have to say that this book had me laughing out loud. The things that came out of Alex's mouth were never dull; sometimes they were serious, mostly they hilarious, but definitely never dull.

Alex is a bored genius who has lost his way in life. Nicky is someone who can tell everyone else how to fix themselves, but doesn't know how to fix herself. Together, through much hesitance on Nicky's part and an overabundance of determination on Alex's part, they learn they bring out the best in each other. Alex discovers that he can succeed at something that doesn't come naturally to him; all he had to do was put in the effort. And Nicky learns that the wall of fortitude she'd placed around her heart could come crashing down; all she needed was to find that one person who loved her the way God made her…flaws and all.

This is a sweet romance and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys chick lit.

I love her books, they has it's own warm athmosphere, it's funny and heart warming.

It's an easy read, I was enjoying every minutes of it.

After the second books of her, I think I can tell that Julie has an unique way of writing, something refreshening, well depicted.

This book is, in many very important ways, very different than the other books by Julie Farrell that I've read. It is very poignant, and in places, difficult to read. Ms. Farrell makes extremely good use of the "flashback phenomenon" to put in just a few of the details of one character (at first, quite unidentified, and unidentifiable), to add an important, tantalizing bit of flesh. Ultimately, literally.
Julie Farrell is an author who is not afraid to take on some social issues in her writing. She has touched on the issues of mental illness in other books. In this book, which is an almost sweet book, with virtually no sexual content, she lets her characters bring out a few other issues, including bullying and its eventual repercussions.
I found myself crying, and unable to put the book down as it approached the end. I am hoping against hope that these characters find themselves in an additional story, because I have a very strong need to know what happens next.

What a wonderful, heart-warming and realistic (in the best way) book! It takes place in Maidenhead, UK and some of the descriptions just of that had me sniggering to myself.

This is a romance book, a self-help book, full of humour, situations, trials and tribulations and friendship. And don't forget tea or coffee with cake! This book will make you laugh and will also make you cry. There was one bit (that I won't ruin) that came as a shock to me and what followed had me snuffling into my tissues. The very human characters in this book face their inner (and sometimes outer) demons and do it with the love and friendship of others and their own strengths that they don't even realise that they have.

Wonderful writing, with a twist, that completely drew me in. Made me laugh, made me cry and gave me more than a few good self-help quotes.

this was a good story. the only thing for me that was hard was some of the wording. I didn't understand what some of the terms for certain things were. Nicky fled germany when she was only 15. As she got older she acquired a old coffeeshop which she rented from a mean man. Enter Alex. Alex is a doctor but doesn't practice anymore. He wants to find a purpose for his life and he is drifting. He enters the coffee shop one day and sees Nicky. He is really attracted to her but she doesn't want any relationship. She is hiding a secret which she feels no one will understand. Alex lends his time to the shop and starts to spend time there to be close to Nicky. There is so much more to this story you will have to read to find out. Find out Nicky's secret and if she will let Alex in and let him love her.

Ms. Farrell has a knack for humor that keeps you reading even if you're a little confused at first about what the heck is happening. This is the second book of hers that I've read, and I have to admit that I liked the first one even better, but I'm still glad I read this one.

The main female character, who seems at times to be a multiple personality, and the main male character, whose motivations for his disaffection with life are a little unclear, still managed to have some very real interactions. At times sad, at times hilarious, and with a twist you won't see coming unless you pay close attention. Ms. Farrell has the ability to design a complex character and infuse her with a philosophy that she herself espouses. Well worth the read.

I would give this book 3.5 stars.

It took a little bit for the confusion to clear but it was a lovely read. I certainly wasn't expecting Nicky's secret at all, the revelation of her secret was handled nicely. I would love to read more about Nicky's background though and her struggle after running away from Germany.

Maybe the author was too convincing but I absolutely hated Alex in the beginning and saw no possibility for redemption at all. I felt that Alex did come a long way as the story went along, however I would love to have seen more development of Alex.

Overall, it is a lovely read, with some decent substance and isn't as clichéd as most novels out there. This book has potential, although it didn't quite reach its full potential.

i recieved an author's copy of this for a fair and honest review, so here it is!

i thoroughly enjoyed this engaging tale of Alex and Nicky, and Nicky's coffee shop, that lends its name to the title of the book. it tells of the fight to keep the coffee shop, and each other, whilst battling their inner demons. a twist in the tale, that i thought i saw coming, but NOT that twist!

a lovely tale of love, romance, friendship, of growing up, and fighting for what YOU want.
