The Selective Mutism Resource Manual

Rate this book
Selectively mute children are at a significant disadvantage personally, socially and educationally. This unique manual emphasises practical assessment and treatment and provides advice and information, filling a significant gap in the availability of suitable resources in this field. It uses an approach based on behavioural principles and a hierarchy of stages of confident speaking originally conceived by Anthony Glassberg. It summarizes relevant literature and theory and provides detailed ideas on assessment and management. It includes case examples, photocopiable material, and a discussion about progress, transfer and discharge. It is written for teachers, clinical and educational psychologists, speech language therapists, child psychiatrists and parents.

I have a new child on my caseload with this anxiety disorder, and not having had any training in this during graduate school I needed to do my own research on how to create a treatment plan. This manual is incredibly comprehensive and offers so many practical plans to implement in therapy. I have four or five books on the topic and this one by far the most useful.

This has been a really informative book, I suffered from Selective Mutism from the age of 4 to about 16. It then shifted to Social Anxiety, in my early 20s I began expanding my social circle and made significant progress. In my late 20s I moved to a different country and my SM came back.

I've been trying to go through this book slowly so I can absorb what I'm reading and I'm glad I did. It has made me realize that my SM started before going to school and what my triggers were.

Although the book is geared towards parents and helping their child I feel like adults who also suffer from SM can benefit from the resources listed inside.
