George Mikes wrote in 'How To Be Decadent', 'You can keep a dog; but it is the cat who keeps people, because cats find humans useful domestic animals.' How true is that? Cats generally do as they please and when they sit besides their owner, or should I say living companion as cats do not really have an owner, and purr, human hearts melt instantly.

This collection of over 75 delightful images, complete with apposite and amusing captions, are sure to act as a tonic for anyone feeling down or tired if for no other reason than that person will wonder at the photographer's skill and patience in producing such comic, quirky and, particularly in the case of the cat, dignified photographs. Whatever they are doing, the cats never seem to lose their cool!

This is admirably summed up by William (the cat, that is) who as 'Crown Prince' complete with crown, is pictured finding it 'exhausting practising for the day he will be King' - as if he wasn't already! Meanwhile Blackie and Brownie take advantage of a farmer who is obviously an expert at milking his cows for, with the two cats stood on hind legs alongside, he manages to squirt milk straight from the cow's udder into each cat's mouth in turn - and they love it!

And the cat obviously knows where his food comes from as a photograph from the turn of the 19th century reveals. A mobile street butcher is offering his wares and the wording on the end of his cart states, 'Cats and Dogs meat'; the cats can obviously read for there they are in the street awaiting the production of such goodies.

Suki obviously doesn't like competition for under a caption 'Keep a Lid On It' she is determined to close the lid of a basket into which another kitten is being squashed and thus (almost) kept out of the picture. And Custard is an unusual little kitten for she enjoys two 15-minute swimming sessions each week and, would you believe it, her favourite stroke is, tongue in cheek, the doggy paddle!

Minnie and Mickey enjoy a ride in the slow lane as they play along on the back of their tortoise pal and speaking of pals, Benny doesn't realise that one of his, a budgerigar, regularly perches on his back when he is asleep - he just won't budge!

There are plenty more amusing images that are sure to amuse the reader and there is an informative introduction that, for instance, tells us that there are around 60,000 hairs per square inch on a cat's back and double that on its underside and that cats will sleep an average of 16 hours each day - don't we just know that latter fact!
