USA Today bestselling author Heidi Betts is the daughter of an Arabian sheik and a Las Vegas showgirl, as well as the heiress to the Chocolate is Better Than Sex Candy Company fortune. Because of this, she eats chocolate in all its many delicious forms for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and in-between snacks . . . without ever gaining an ounce on her perfect five-foot-nine, size zero figure.
Each and every one of her breathtaking, award-winning novels has been adapted to film and gone on to become a phenomenal box office smash, featuring such mega-stars as Hugh Jackman and Sandra Bullock, Tom Cruise and Julia Roberts, and Harrison Ford and Charlize Theron.
Heidi readily admits that she is only able to write such passionate love stories because of her real-life happily-ever-after romance with superstar actor Dwayne Johnson, who makes every day a fairy tale. When she’s not writing or making hot, toe-curling love with her “Rock” of a husband, Heidi can often be found riding naked on horseback (a la Lady Godiva) along the beaches of Malibu or hobnobbing with the rich and famous on Martha’s Vineyard.
If you’d like to experience your own perfect, idyllic life just like Heidi Betts, be sure to take the little purple pill. (Not the red one. Never the red one.)

This was a decent book and had a whirlwind romance. The heroine is an even planner & has been planning her sister's wedding to the hero, who is a childhood friend and a man she has had feelings for a long time, not that she would act on it and then her sister calls of the wedding.
The hero isn't hurt by the wedding being called off, her and Laurel never shared that kind of a relationship and now that he looks back they didn't even have enough passion to sleep together, they just respected each other and wanting to settle down gravitated towards each other. The hero soon awakens to the fact that he has had feelings for the heroine and knowing how selfless she is and won't get involved with him, he sets out to change that, he just doesn't want her in bed but permanently.
Of course the heroine doesn't know all of that and there is some drama but all in all a decent read.
Events planner Kara Kincaid has had her hands full organizing her sister's wedding, a situation made even more difficult due to her crush on the groom, hotel magnate Eli Houghton. But now Laurel has called off the wedding, and Kara and Eli realize that their casual affection conceals a fierce attraction. Would a relationship between them work or drive a wedge between Kara and her family?
The premise is entertaining and the couple is engaging.
Betts manages to handle the elephant in the room, i.e. Eli's engagement to Kara's sister, Laurel, with aplomb as their relationship was one of convenience rather than true love. In contrast, Eli and Kara have sizzling chemistry, and their interactions are sweet and sexy. The only issue is the conflict at the end. Not only does it feel contrived, but Kara's reaction is very immature. Thankfully, it isn't too drawn out and all's well that ends well.
The most disappointing aspect of the book is the lack of development in the ongoing mystery. What little information is provided happens off page, and the reader is told rather than shown the details. Hopefully the next book will do better in the arena.
“I’ve been in love with you forever, Eli. Since the first time we met…all through high school, college, our adult lives… It broke my heart when you started dating Laurel. When the two of you started talking about marriage and asked me to plan the wedding.” Her voice cracked and her eyes glistened with moisture. Any anger or frustration he’d been feeling only seconds before washed away, replaced by keen remorse and the sudden understanding that he was a jackass. A complete and utter fool.”
Ummm....no. Just NO, He WOULD have married the sister if SHE hadn’t dumped him. Then what? And he had the audacity to claim he always loved her? Because nothing screams love louder than asking her to plan your wedding to her sister. You fucking jackass!
Safety note: the engagement to the sister was a platonic one.
I felt ON THE VERGE OF I DO was a nice change of what you would normally expect. For once it was the male character that was ready to settle down, who wasn’t a power hungry, ego flying male who felt women were beneath him.
Eli Houghton was just dumped by his bride to be a month before the wedding. Although he wanted a family, he can’t say that he’s disappointed with the break-up. When he stops by his wedding planners house, who happens to be the bride’s sister, his eyes are suddenly opened and he’s aware he was marrying the wrong sister.
For years Kara Kincaid has had feelings for the boy who was always around while growing up. She kept her mouth shut as Eli and Laurel advanced their relationship, but planning their wedding was crushing.
When Eli comes over and delivers a soul crushing kiss and then invites her to his most enchanted resorts to give her opinion and suggestions on his event planner she can’t help but be swept away. Of course she has misgiving about being with her sister ex-fiancé and at first as to what he’s planning, but as their time goes on he’s upfront when she questions him on his motives and even after getting her into bed, still goes above and beyond with her needs.
Eli’s plan to convince her to make them permanent is blown to bits when the coordinator lies about an affair they are having. Locking herself in her house for a week, she doesn’t venture out until her sis comes with updates about their father’s murder. There she breaks down and lays out everything that went on with Eli.
Her sister gives her blessing and advises her to talk to Eli and get the true story. Doing just that, she not only lets Eli know about her long time feelings for him, but learns just how deep her loves her also.
Her family takes the news well and they plan to wed on their previous wedding date.
Let me first say that reading a Harlequin Desire, for that matter any Harlequin, is like coming home. Harlequins are what started my love affair with the romance genre at the age of twelve and has kept me in its folds ever since. Heidi Betts welcomed me home with a warm embrace, otherwise known as her novel, “On The Verge of I Do“.
Kara and Eli grew up together and Kara has always crushed on Eli, so you can only imagine how hard it is for her to plan her sister’s marriage to him. Yet, she loves them both enough to want them to be happy, so she pushes past her secret feelings. Then Kara's sister calls off her wedding and Eli realizes he doesn’t feel bad that she did at all. If anything, he realizes that he might have been with the wrong sister. With one kiss, he sees that Kara was the sister he was meant for and the plans of seduction go into play. Kara feels guilty about wanting Eli. Sure, she has always loved him, but acting on it is sure to cause not only guilt, but gossip. Eli, however, won't give her time to think too much before he turns up the heat to get what he wants.
This is book four in this series, but it can be read as a stand alone. I loved how they grew up together and Kara harbored feelings for Eli that she was scared to act on until it was too late. Eli was scrumptious and you have to love a guy who goes after what he wants until he gets it, even if he is a little late on figuring it out. Kara is sweet, caring and very likable as a leading lady. She is basically your every day, girl next door. When Kara and Eli finally give in the passionate, tender romance between them is pretty hot in bed. Betts has captured every element in “On The Verge of Saying I Do” that made me fall in the with Harlequins and romance.
Very good book. I could see in the earlier books that the relationship between Eli and Laurel wasn't the strongest, so the end of their engagement wasn't a surprise. It was something of a surprise to me that Eli fixated on Kara so quickly, but he was surprised by the flare of attraction he felt that night he went to her house. Once he realized that the feelings he had for Kara were far stronger than those he had felt for Laurel, he set out to convince her that they belonged together. He had some great ways to do it (besides the obvious) and I loved their picnic on the beach. Kara had been in love with Eli for years, and wasn't convinced that his pursuit of her wasn't just some sort of rebound thing. I loved the ending when she went to him at the park, and again at the dinner with her family. I'm really looking forward to the next two books in the series - I think I know who the bad guy is, but I'm not positive.
Kara has been in love with Eli all her life, she had crushed on him through high school, college and even after when he started dating her sister Laurel. When Laurel broke off Eli and her engagement, Eli realized that he was and had been wasting time with the wrong sister. He was actually in love with Kara and seem to have been blind to the fact that he has loved her since he has known her. When Eli steals her away for a vacation of love, Kara feels guilty that she is doing it behind her sisters back but when a troublesome woman named Diane says Eli's been having an affair with her, Kara runs.
It was so romantic and beautiful. I really liked reading this novel and was impressed with it for sure! I enjoyed the love, characters and common sense in the book.
I had a love hate relationship with this book. Too much in bed between Eli and Kara. Not enough background story of who they really are. Kara is a smart talented women but she bolts after Diane’s story without confronting Eli. I was disappointed she did that. She is a strong women, she should not have been so weak. At least all worked out. Also strong Laurel does not love Eli but still kept planning to marry him even though she could care less about wedding plans. What is with that. As far as Nikki and Jack part IV they are ticking me off. I know Jack has a beef with the Kincaids but come on, the kids are not at fault for what their dad did. We will see where the next story goes b
I Would Have Enjoyed This Book More If The Leading Male Character (no way can I refer to him as a hero) Wasn’t Introduced As A Manipulative Ass. This Story Comes Across As A Piece Of Trash. I Thought The Concept Was Original And It Could Have Been A Five Star Story; But I Couldn’t Get Beyond How Sleazy Eli And What A Weak Minded h Kara Comes Across As. I Couldn’t Help Think She Could Show Some Self Respect And Get Her Own Room, She Has Money And Didn’t See That She Even Thought Of It. Really. This Doesn’t Come Across To Me As A Romance Novel, But A Cheap Hook Up Novel, Set In An Expensive Setting.
I am a fan of Heidi Betts blog. http://heidibetts.com/wipsandchains/ and while she may never forgive me for getting the title of the last book of hers I reviewed wrong (in my defense there were a lot of similarly titled books out at the same time) she is responsible for me coming back to read Harlequin’s short and sweets.
On the Verge of I Do is the fourth in a series and I’ve not read the others. It does well as a stand-alone but would probably be better if you’ve read them all. On the Verge of I Do tells the tale of Kara and Eli. Eli is to marry Laurel, Kara’s older sister. Kara is an event planner and has been in love with Eli forever. Planning Lauren and Eli’s wedding has been a little slice of hell for Kara. When Laurel breaks off the engagement Eli discovers that he is relieved and when he next sees Kara he figures out why.
I really enjoyed this one!! It is the fourth in a Harlequin series by other authors and I haven't read any of the other books, but I feel I was still able to follow along. I thought the premise was very interesting and the author did a great job with it. Even though the relationship seem very preciptious, we are able to see that Kara and Eli actually had long-standing feelings for one another. It would have been easy to dislike Lauren, but instead she came across as honest and likeable. I really liked both Kara and Eli a lot.
Gah. Avoid unless you find near-date-rape scenarios entertaining. I didn't. This book had a lot of the elements of a classic escapist romance read, and I started with pretty good expectations. But it went downhill quickly and those different elements never gelled -- instead of being passionately forceful, the hero came across as manipulative and self-centered. And the heroine was nothing but a genteel southern marshmallow. Lots of details about ladylike clothes, hot sex, and a fancy hotel couldn't save this one.

This is suppose to be a continuation of the Kincaids Saga..,all the main characters have their own input and storyline. This book did not encourage me to want to read the others.this is a total letdown for such a great series..not even her letter was read in this book, which is a major part of the storyline. I'm so disappointed..Big letdown.
For all those who have been following the Kincaids series you'll know that Betts did a wonderful job with Kara and Eli's story. I enjoyed the way they figured out how much in love with each other. It was a sweet story with the happy ending you were hoping for.
