Outlines a self-therapy program which describes what the person who stutters can and should do to tackle the problem and control stuttering. Often used as a supplement to clinical treatment. This exciting revised 11th edition is written to and for the many adults and teens who stutter. It states confidently that as a person who stutters, you do not need to surrender helplessly to your speech difficulty because you can change the way you talk. You can learn to communicate with ease rather than with effort. There is no quick and easy way to tackle the problem, but with the right approach, self-therapy can be effective. Revised 11th edition 2010. 192 pages
- THIS BOOK IS GOING TO BE A LIFE CHANGER-I HAVE STUTTERED FOR 45 YEARS. AND HAVE HAD YEARS OF TRAINING FROM EXPERTS. IT HAS BEEN SUCCESSFUL, BUT BEING TO CONFIDENT THAT I DIDN'T NEED THE PRACTICE HAS BEEN A NIGHTMARE WHEN THE SEASON OF FLUENT SPEECH BECAME STUTTERING AGAIN AT AN INTENSIFIED VERSION. BEING A STUTTERER HAS BEEN AN ADVANTAGE, BUT ALSO A VERY BIG DISASTER. I MEAN THAT I HAVE BEEN IN FRONT OF HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE AT A TIME AND STUTTERED, BUT ALSO WAS FLUENT. THERE WAS A LOT OF WOWS AND A FEW LAUGHTER. The rest of the population that has a similar experience can relate. THE LAUGHTER FROM CHILDREN ALONG WITH ADULTS HAS BEEN A MAJOR STRUGGLE TO GET AWAY FROM. ( THIS BOOK IS A BLESSING FOR US WHO I GUESS WANT TO BE NORMAL FLUENT PEOPLE. Take away from this book the knowledge that we have to use it to our advantage and everyone of us who stutter is different, but the same. THIS DISEASE DOES NOT MAKE US IDIOTS. WE CAN LEARN TO TALK, BUT IN A DIFFERENT WAY. IT IS PERCEIVED BY OTHERS WHO DON'T UNDERSTAND THAT WE ARE DUMB. Give them a chance ALONG WITH YOU TO BE AMAZED AT HOW IT FEELS GREAT TO COMMUNICATE. STUTTERING IS AS UNIQUE OF A PROBLEM AS THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE IT. USE THIS BOOK TO HELP CONQUER THE BEAST. I AM STILL READING IT SO I WILL KEEP YOU INFORMED. There is 195 pages to this book.
This is a great book that I highly recommend for anybody with a stutter or if you are supporting and wanting to help someone living with a stutter.
Many of the young people and their families I supported as a Career and Life Coach struggled with various disabilities from mild to severe and this included certain speech and language difficulties. This sometimes included having a stutter.
Just to be clear though a person can have a stutter (sometimes called a stammer) and NOT have any disabilities or learning developmental delays at all. Some people are born with it, it’s obvious from early speech but for others it can develop a bit later in childhood or beyond.
Stuttering (also called stammering) is a speech disorder that affects the flow of speaking. A person who stutters may know exactly what they want to say but has trouble saying it smoothly.
Typical signs include:
Repetitions – repeating sounds, syllables, or words (e.g., “b-b-b-ball” or “can-can-can I go?”)
Prolongations – stretching out sounds (e.g., “ssssssun”)
Blocks – pauses where no sound comes out even though the person is trying to speak
I’ve seen the pain it brings to the stutterer. Utter frustration at struggling to get words out and free flow express themselves. Children and teenagers can be especially vulnerable to bullying which can compound low self-esteem and low self-confidence.
If you can get help from a speech language therapist it’s a great way to go! People DO completely overcome stuttering or get it down to a low manageable level. So don’t give up if you are trying to overcome this in yourself.
The book is great! It has techniques and methods to practice to help you on your road to your end goal. I found the Author to be very authentic in obvious empathy towards others.
It’s packed with so much good information, usable advice and it provides daily exercises to practice. There is no fast fix with this but with commitment and effort I know people have stopped stuttering totally.
I found this an educational and informative read and I feel I’ve gained good insight into understanding those I support if stuttering is a challenge they are wanting to overcome. I feel more equipped to know how I can help even a little bit. I’d definitely recommend this to anyone. 4 solid stars for this!

The books message hits home. 'fear feeds stuttering'
Many techniques mentioned in this book takes a lot of practice. It is a good one to understand how a stutterer can navigate and accept their voice. But it's no pill and the hard work is still ahead for the person who chooses to use techniques outlined here.
