Hart Ducaine was the love of Kate Miller's life, but he hadn't been interested in a long-term relationship with her fifteen years before. So why should she trust him now? There is no way he will ever be her knight in shining . . . she can't remember the word . . . knight in shining whatever! A professional bull rider turned rancher, Hart only has eyes for Kate, but she is one sassy piece of baggage -- even more so than back when she was a teenager and she'd first caught his eye. Trust is hard to regain once it's been broken, and neither of them are willing to take chances with matters of the heart -- not anymore. And then Kate's Cajun grandmother, Maw Maw, and some of her other relatives set a plan into motion to abandon the two on a primitive island in the bayou. No cell phones. No electricity. No running water. And no one to talk to except each other. Will they figure out what Maw Maw already knows: that fate is drawing them together and they need to learn to trust their hearts?
Hi! I'm twenty five years old and movie star gorgeous. The camera added thirty plus years and a few wrinkles. Can't trust those cameras or mirrors either. Along with bathroom scales they are notorious liars! Honestly, I am the mother of three fantastic grown children who've made me laugh and given me more story ideas than I could ever write. My husband, Charles, is my strongest supporter and my best friend. He's even willing to eat fast food and help with the laundry while I finish one more chapter! Life is good and I am blessed!
Reading has been a passion since I was five years old and figured out those were words on book pages. As soon as my chubby little fingers found they could put words on a Big Chief tablet with a fat pencil, I was on my way. Writing joined reading in my list of passions. I will read anything from the back of the Cheerio's box to Faulkner and love every bit of it. In addition to reading I enjoy cooking, my family and the ocean. I love the Florida beaches. Listening to the ocean waves puts my writing brain into high gear.
I love writing romance because it's about emotions and relationships. Human nature hasn't changed a bit since Eve coveted the fruit in the Garden of Eden. Settings change. Plots change. Names change. Times change. But love is love and men and women have been falling in and out of it forever. Romance is about emotions: love, hate, anger, laughter... all of it. If I can make you laugh until your sides ache or grab a tissue then I've touched your emotions and accomplished what every writer sets out to do.
I got serious about writing when my third child was born and had her days and nights mixed up. I had to stay up all night anyway and it was very quiet so I invested in a spiral back notebook and sharpened a few pencils. The story that emerged has never sold but it's brought in enough rejection slips to put the Redwood Forest on the endangered list. In 1997 Kensington bought two books for their Precious Gems line. Two years and six books later the line died with only four of those books seeing publication. But by then Avalon had bought a book and another, and another. Ten years later the list has grown to thirty nine. Last year Sourcebooks bought the Lucky Series which is in the bookstores now. They've also bought The Honky Tonk Series which will debut with I LOVE THIS BAR in June and will be followed by HELL, YEAH, MY GIVE A DAMN'S BUSTED, and HONKY TONK CHRISTMAS.
Folks ask me where I get my ideas. Three kids, fifteen grandchildren, two great grandchildren. Note: I was a very young grandmother! Life is a zoo around here when they all come home. In one Sunday afternoon there's enough ideas to keep me writing for years and years. Seriously, ideas pop up at the craziest times. When one sinks its roots into my mind, I have no choice but to write the story. And while I'm writing the characters peek over my shoulder and make sure I'm telling it right and not exaggerating too much. Pesky little devils, they are!
I have a wonderful agent, Erin Niumata, who continues to work magic and sell my work. I'm very lucky to have her and my editors who continue to believe in me.
This book was better than the first one in this series. I'm glad I didn't let the mediocre reviews persuade me to pass on it.
Hart and Kate dated briefly in high school, and she's never gotten over their breakup. When Fate gives them a second chance at love, they cautiously (perhaps too cautiously and slowly) consider getting back together. The book was sweet and, unfortunately, a clean read.
My number one complaint is the book needed a bit more sizzle. These were two adults, not teens. Passion can be expressed without being explicit. These two were trapped alone TWICE during two natural disasters- the perfect moment to take things to the next level and explore their physical attraction. Their hesitation and constant overthinking became annoying. It shouldn't take two adults that long to figure out what they want. The childish games cost one star from this reader. For about 70% of this book, I was ready to give it a four-star review. The "test" and thinking about hooking up with other characters spoiled the romance. The proposal seemed unnatural because IMO, these two really didn't "date" as adults.
I got through the book but it was difficult. I'm confused as to when the characters fell in love or what they even liked about each other. They had no chemistry and the female lead treated her counterpart terribly through-out. Just no passion, no real storyline, unlikeable main characters, and fairly bad dialogue. I hate leaving a series unfinished but I just cant bring myself to read the third book, and it's free!
I don’t think I have ever read a book with less likeable characters. My god, these are the biggest group of “poor me” women I have ever had the displeasure of reading about. You will be cheering for all of them to get eaten by an alligator in the swamp by the end.
Yes I loved this book...I’m a romantic mush head but not on every romantic novel. I gave it 4 ✨ because the beginning was a bit all over the place. As a reviewer I’m not one to give the whole story away or spoilers...if I do I believe one can read into what I’m saying and read the book. ‘In Shining Whatever’ is not your average romantic saga. It deals with 2 people that honestly at different times I’d love to shake the both of them and tell them “GROW UP! That was years ago let the thing go already!” You’ll understand when you read.
I didn’t like the beginning because it started with a death that brought 2 people back together, but at the same time, one of those 2 didn’t want to be brought together. In fact the person who was essentially murdered, which totally had nothing to do with anything, was not liked by anyone? So I just felt maybe another way could have been written, but that’s why I’m not the author & just a wanna be one who can review, read & listen.
It gets extremely worrying towards the end, but of all my favorite characters ever written about, Maw Maw was my most favorite & most knowledgeable about life in general. You’ll see what I mean when you read.
Other than a few things & a bit wordy at times..I loved it and highly recommend for all! Please read and before you download take this beautiful quote to heart ❤️
“When we are old and have loved for many years, if you should go first, wait for me outside the pearly gates, because I'll join you as soon as I can. I don't want to live a single day without you."
Boy...I wished I had written that many years ago...plus
“I am your knight in shining whatever.....
He said he wanted to be your whatever and didn't know how.”
03-04-2025 I didn't realize I had read this book before until I was getting ready to review it. 9 years later and it is equally as ridiculous and irritating as it was originally. In fact, I think I disliked Kate more than I did the first time.

Irrational
After the last book, I started this one with some hope. But Kate started out in the first chapter with irrational anger.
You can't seriously tell me that she was still pissed off 15 years later for a relationship of a few weeks when she was a teenager.
Hart really hung in there to try and build a relationship with Kate. Even the small glimmers of hope she showed Hart were so miniscule, they were not worth much.
Even after everything was explained regarding Kate's feelings about Hart, it was still so ridiculous, it left me irritated. My advice: Read it and judge for yourself.
I am not a fan of romance, but I wanted to challenge myself and read more so I went to the library and randomly selected this book. The cover nor the title gives you an idea of what the story is about. I do not want to spoil it for you, but as always in the end the guy gets the girl, but the fun of the read is to figure out how he gets her. Every chapter (like a Lifetime movie) presents a twist and turn to the story and you wonder if it'll end with an unhappily ever after. The murder mystery in the beginning tricked me into thinking the whole book was a murder mystery, but it soon gets solved and you realize you are indeed reading a romance (not to mention its on the cover). All in all I have always been a fan of reading or watching a story where each part is a mystery until you get to the end. if you like romance or even mysteries this is a nice easy read (I think so) for you.
I have read the Longhorn Canyon series and Spikes and Spurs—they are so good! I am sorry I read the first two books in this series and I don’t want to waste my time reading the third! Kate is a mean hateful girl hung up on 15 year old crush. What is a 17 year old boy suppose to give to a 15 year old? She is supposedly a 31 year old mature person with a big grudge. She doesn’t even let the guy talk to her little alone have any interaction. So they are put on an island for two days—not much chemistry there either. Then wham they get married. Did they even have a date? I didn’t like Theron in the first book. He also is a grudge full, very uncomplimentary user. “I can’t live with you but I can’t live without you more.” How romantic! No chemistry in these books. Why should I want to read about hateful fights between Sophie and Elijah?
I struggled with this book. I just couldn't like the heroine at all. I found her very abrasive throughout the story, and what I love about Ms. Brown's novels are the amusing secondary characters and they are not as strong in this one. Also, the chemistry is just not there between the hero and the heroine. They are constantly fighting with each, and then at the end suddenly they are madly in love. That did not work for me.
Nonetheless, I will still read the next one in the series, since I find Sophie intriguing. Happy ☺reading 📚!
First Carolyn Brown book I didn't like. The main character, Kate, acted like a brat, and treated Hart like dirt. Why he didn't put her in the rear-view mirror and hit the road is a mystery to me. I get that she was afraid of getting hurt, but she didn't have to be so hateful and talk so ugly to him. Very unlikable character!
In Shining Whatever: Three Magic Words Romance is by Caroline Brown. Caroline Brown takes the slightest idea and turns it into a spectacular romance. Three girls, Fancy, Sophia, and Kate decided that the three best words in the world were not, “I love you.” Each of them had their own set of words which resonated with them as their careers took over. Fancy’s words were ‘ a forever thing’; Sophie’s were ‘life after wife’; and Kates’s were ‘ the shining whatever’. Now to find a guy would say them. Kate and Hart had been on different pages since they were in high school. Each of them loved the other one but neither could come out and tell the other. Maybe it was time for someone to step in. Before anyone could, Kate left Texas and went back to her Maw Maw’s house in Louisiana to think over a job opportunity. She had been offered her old job as detective here in Louisiana. Did she want to take it and leave Texas and Hart for good? Hart wasn’t leaving anything to chance and followed her to Louisiana. If she was going to think things over, he was going to be around to remind her of him. Would he be able to convince her to return to Texas with him or would she decide to stay in Louisiana? Perhaps a little interference by Maw Maw was in order!
For office Kate Miller, rodeo rider turned rancher Jethro Hart Ducaine is the yardstick to measure any man she thought she might be serious about. As teenagers, they shared a kiss. At their friends, Fancy and Theron’s wedding reception Hart seemed to have no idea who Kate was but her sassy sneer at Hart’s poor memory obviously said ‘chase me!’
Of course, that’s not the end of the story because Hart gets himself arrested for murdering his high school sweetheart and Kate’s conscious won’t let her not give him the truthful alibi she needs. Though by doing that, she’s ending not only her career but her good reputation in their small town. Luckily, Kate’s support system has a cure for that!
For my taste, Kate was a lively secondary character in the first outing, it’s unfortunate she comes across so flat during her own star turn. Hart is fine but (also for my taste) the two don’t have chemistry giving the outing a feeling that I’s filler but in any event this reader was a bit disappointed. Rating: 3.25stars
Kate- sassy, independent, brash, and still in love with her first and only love Hart.
Hart- let the one girl slip through his fingers when he was young not realizing the impact, but life gave him another chance to bad she’s biting like the mosquitos.
These two just needed to sort out their past and stop bickering long enough to talk it out. Stubbornness supreme with them. More stubborn then the first books couple.
I like Maw Maw. Smart, funny, tactical, if she was real and in my life I’d listen straight up.
I liked this story, but sometimes felt it dragged with too much filler-like what they ate (really do not need the play by play).
And sometimes those two just jumped and assumed way too much. I was always told that just made an ass out of you and me when you assume.
Clean book, would make it better with some steamy parts, but still enjoyable. Felt like I was in Louisiana with the language and dialogue.
Audio Version - Having listened to A Forever Thing, which I rated 5*'s, it was inevitable that I continue on with the series. There are three books in total, this was the second. I was sadly disappointed as felt it was just a repeat of the first book. The only real difference being the characters involved. This one also had a very far fetched story line in my opinion. When listening to any fictional novel, I understand that anything goes, but sometimes the author can stretch it a bit too far, which I believe was the case with this book. I think this could have been one book about three friend's, instead of three books about each one individually. I won't be listening to the third book as believe I already know what will transpire. I am disappointed as I initially felt the series had potential and I honestly take no pleasure in not writing a glowing review. If you are a die hard romantic fan then you may enjoy it more than I did.
Kate and Hart loved each other when they were young. But, as most young loves, it wasn’t meant to be then. Fast forward 15 years, and Kate still thinks of Hart. More often than she would like but he was the perfect man for her. When she sees him again, is this their 2nd chance? Hart has also been thinking of Kate for 15 years but mainly with regret because he knew it was a mistake to leave her behind. He’s been on the rodeo circuit all these years but knows that Kate is it for him. Can he get her to think of him as a man and not as the stupid boy he was? This was a lovely second chance romance with an expected HEA. I enjoyed it all and it makes me want to visit Texas!
If you love a romantic story you have to read this book..........and be patient! It's like a cat chasing its tail! Kate has been in love with Hart Ducaine since she was 15, but is convinced that he didn't feel anything towards her! Now here they are 15 years later, trying to find their way back to each other, and instead fight their own demons in their heads! It seems all is lost until Kate's Cajun maw maw takes things into her own hands to make them figure out what they really want! However, Kate doesn't just want the words "I love you" she wants him to also be her knight in shining.......whatever! Will he be the one or is there someone in Louisiana who has her heart?
I liked this one better than the first of the series. Nice and cheesy always melts my heart. Brittany Pressley has such a great voice for audio books - but I especially love her Louisiana accent. I could listen to that all day long! Kate Miller is a tough woman. She doesn't put up with any crap. She also gets really mean when she is hungry, which I found hilarious because I can relate to those feelings. Her long-lost love, Hart Ducaine is back in her life and he is very much the same as she is, stubborn and bull-headed. It was a fun, light read and I love Kate's Cajun grandmother, Maw Maw. Carolyn Brown didn't disappoint me with these characters.
I am enjoying In Shining Whatever. Characters are interesting although I do agree with some of the other reviews that I wonder what do Kate and Hart actually have in common and I wish the author had researched the Cajun culture more as I am finding that she misuses some of the words and phrases incorrectly. However it is the audio reader that is ruining the book for me. I am from Louisiana and her accent is horrible and she didn't learn to pronounce a lot of the words correctly.
That being said I do want to say that I am enjoying the book and would recommend it to others who want a light read that is pleasant.
I really wondered where this story was going a couple of times. It certainly kept me guessing. I loved that. There were a few moments where I thought, well, that's that, the end. So, I looked to see how much I'd read, only to find I was barely half way (45%) through the book. That was a surprise. But even more pleasing, was that this romance, wasn't predictable. Loved the setting. Texas and then, the Bayou. Read it. You'll love it. And! the other two in the series as well.
I love this book way more than I thought I would. It was more of an adult romance book than a teen romance book (which I usually read). But I’m glad that I decided to read this one (well listen 🎧 to it). The story was too cute, I loved that there were two different locations for the story and we got to see a different part of her life in Texas and down in Louisiana. The cajun accents were wonderful, Britney Presley is a wonderful audio reader so hearing the different voices was amazing. Definitely loved this book, on to read the other two!!
The second book in the series, A Three. Magic Words Romance by Carolyn Brown. loved this story as much as the first book. Kate and Hart fell in love whiile they were teenagers but Kate move away to Louisiana and she never saw Hart again up until she was back home. Hart never fell in love again after Kate moved away all those years ago but when they met again at Kate's best friends wedding, the feelings were still between them. Both are headstrong and stubborn to admit their feelings until Kate goes back to Louisiana and her grandmother interfers.
I have not read a book by Carolyn Brown that I did not like and this was no different. This is the second book in the trilogy but can be read as a standalone. It is Hart and Kate's story. It took Hart a long time to figure out what he wants. Kate she thinks too much with her head and not her heart. So many times I just wanted to shake her. Their story is full of frustration and love. I loved every minute of this book and was sad to turn the last page.
Fifteen years is a long time to be in love with someone who has moved on. Kate Miller was in love at 15 with Hart Ducaine who was 18 and the high school football star. Now fifteen years later, he has returned to his home town and she has as well. They run smack dab into each other at a wedding and the sparks still fly. Now they have to determine if it is live or lust and if it is the forever kind.
This was another cute story by Caroline Brown. At the beginning of the story, Kate Miller is Hart Ducaine's alibi in a very serious situation. After that, the story is pure Caroline Brown fun. I especially enjoyed meeting Kate's Cajun family, although I did have a problem with some of the narrator's pronunciation. However, it didn't take away my enjoyment of the story. Fun read!
As always, Carolyn Brown captivates readers with another emotional novel. This one veers from a Texas town to the Cajun outback. The characters are spunky and spirited and the settings are so vividly described you can close your eyes and you're there. I love an author that can make me do that! So... I highly recommend this book to readers of all ages. The narrative was beautifully done. Kudos to both the author and the narrator.
Kate and Hart have waited a long time for their special time to come, and it seems it's been a long & hard-fought battle, at least on Kate's side. However, with a bit of help from special friends & loved ones, it looks as though things just might work out. Thanks again, Ms. Carolyn!
I had a difficult time with the author's writing style. I don't know if the style is third person or omniscient, but it did not allow much depth. I never quite felt like Hart and Kate should love each other. That said, it was easy too read and fun to spend some time in LA.
