Lily and Blue Kangaroo are inseparable. Whatever Lily does, Blue Kangaroo is there to see. But sometimes he wishes he wasn't, because Lily has started to show off. Will she ever learn to do as she is told?
Blue kangaroo is soooo cute! Here is another enchanting story involving him and his owner, Lily.
Lily is something of a show-off and does not always do as she is told. And when she misbehaves and does all sorts of fancy things she tells Blue Kangaroo, 'I'll show you, Blue Kangaroo!' And Blue Kangaroo always watches. What else could he do?
Lily sees some acrobatics on her Aunt Jemima's television and thinks they are easy so she utters the immortal phrase 'I'll show you, Blue Kangaroo!' Aunt Jemima tries to stop Lily but to no avail so Blue Kangaroo watches. What else could he do?'
The pattern continues as Lily copies a juggler that she sees at a party despite her mother telling her to stop as she creates havoc. Blue Kangaroo simply watches!
Another Aunt, Florence, takes Lily to the park where she copies some boys doing tricks on their bikes and, even thought Aunt Florence tries to stop her, she continues and eventually crashes into a tree and hurts her knees. And, of course, Blue Kangaroo watches it all.
An escapade on a see-saw with her cousin ends up with Blue Kangaroo being catapulted into a tree and Lily being taken home to be put to bed as her mother declares, 'I've had enough of you,' adding, 'And I suppose Blue Kangaroo has had enough, too.' But Blue Kangaroo is not around.
Where is he? Well, he is hanging dangerously on the branch of the tree that he was shot into - that is until he falls off and damages his tail. It is torn and the stuffing is coming out of it. He hops across the lawn and Lily's mother shines her torch on him and takes him in to do repairs, sewing up and bandaging his tail.
Lily's father says how brave he is and suggests that he might not want to stay with Lily after the way she has been acting. Blue Kangaroo ponders this question overnight, wondering if she will ever stop showing off, if she will ever do as she is told, and should he give her another chance?
The following morning Lily runs into the lounge, spots Blue Kangaroo and runs towards him to grab him. But her mother says she cannot have him until she agrees to be good and to do as she is told. All day Lily behaves herself and does not show off once.
Her mother asks her if she is going to turn over a new leaf to which she replies, 'YES! I'm going to be good and do as I am told! I'll show you. And [looking at Blue Kangaroo] I'll show YOU, Blue Kangaroo!' And Blue Kangaroo believes her, after all, what else could he do?
This story covers a number of themes (predominantly the consequences of reckless behaviour) and has a strong character arc. The repeated question "what else could he do?" is humorous at first and endearing at the end.
