The Chronicles of Devi - Cosmos & Mahisha is my second book. The good response to my first book The Himalayan Revelation has encouraged me to continue penning my effervescent ruminations. I am an engineer by education and a technologist by profession and more than anything else I love travelling and exploring new places.

During my two decade active corporate career and travels into the lap of nature and history, I have came across many people, places and the tales associated with them which have left me enriched by some told and some often untold stories.

The Himalayas of Ladakh and Hampi are couple of those places which have left an everlasting impression on me. Their enigmatic environs hide many tales inside them, some of which have been passed from one generation to another. The Himalayan Revelation is my attempt to weave in some of those tales in a modern context. Though it is purely a work of fiction but the story is developed using facts gleamed from history and modern times.

In The Chronicles of Devi, I have attempted to tell a story which has captivated many minds for generations. Our ancient literature is full of enchanting stories. But most of these stories are hidden in the beautiful intricacies of Sanskrit in Vedas, Purans, and Shlokas. I have picked one such gem and have narrated this story in my own modernistic interpretation while keeping its essence intact- it is a story of a single woman and her lion fighting the forces of evil to preserve the balance of nature.

Happy reading,

Pankaj

Historical fictions are exciting to read, and when I got the chance to review ‘The Himalayan Revelation’ by Pankaj Mishra, skillfully connects the past and present, using clear and flowing language. The characters are well-developed, and the story is full of twists that keep readers engaged. Pankaj Mishra, a debut author, tells a thrilling tale of protagonists Gaurav and Natasha, who explore Hampi while working to recreate a historical site. Their adventure uncovers hidden connections and secrets, resulting in lots of action and mystery. Overall, it’s a good read that holds attention throughout.

It is an easy read. By the end of the book you would want to plan a trip to Leh and/or Hampi, and I think that captures all the essence of the book. Will look forward to more books from the author.

REVIEW ON THE BOOK "THE HIMALAYAN REVELATION " BY MISRA PANKAJ.

The Himalayan Revelation" by Pankaj Misra is a contemporary thriller that attempts to bridge the gap between ancient spiritual mysticism and modern-day geopolitical intrigue.

1. Plot Quality: The Architecture of Suspense

The plot is built on a high-stakes premise: a discovery in the Himalayas that threatens to upend the established world order.
Pacing: The narrative starts with a slow-burn, atmospheric buildup, effectively using the rugged terrain of the Himalayas as a character in itself. However, it shifts gears into a fast-paced "race against time" thriller in the second half.
Complexity: Misra does a commendable job weaving together multiple threads—clandestine government agencies, ancient prophecies, and scientific anomalies.
Originality: While the "ancient secret in the mountains" is a classic trope (reminiscent of Lost Horizon or James Rollins’ Sigma Force novels), the specific cultural nuances Misra injects give it a fresh, regional authenticity.
Technical Note: The plot relies heavily on the "MacGuffin" technique—an object or secret that everyone is chasing—but it succeeds because the stakes feel personal to the protagonist rather than just abstractly global.

2. Character Quality: The Human Element

The strength of this book lies in how the characters navigate the tension between skepticism and belief.
The Protagonist: Usually depicted as a grounded individual thrust into extraordinary circumstances. Their growth is marked by a transition from logical cynicism to a reluctant acceptance of the "unexplainable."
The Antagonists: Often, in this genre, villains can become caricatures. Misra avoids this by giving his antagonists clear, albeit misguided, intellectual or nationalistic motivations.
Supporting Cast: The inclusion of local Himalayan figures provides necessary "grounding." These characters serve as the bridge between the reader and the esoteric elements of the story.

3. General Professional Review
From a literary perspective, "The Himalayan Revelation" is a solid entry into the Visionary Fiction and Techno-thriller genres. The only minor critique is that the ending leans toward the "spectacular," which may feel a bit abrupt compared to the meticulously grounded research presented in the opening chapters. If you enjoy a blend of Dan Brown-style pacing with the philosophical depth of Himalayan lore, this is a compelling read.

This book is about this ancient city, Hampi, which was once the capital of the Vijayanagar Empire. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site now, but 450 years ago, it was brutally destroyed. Before that, its rulers hid a secret, and that's where the story kicks in. Fast forward to the present, a young couple stumbles upon an object in the Himalayas that's connected to Hampi's hidden secret. Suddenly, two nations are after it, and things get intense. They're willing to do whatever it takes to get their hands on it, even if it means risking global disaster.

I like a good fiction which really teaches you something and this is one if those books. It's a wild ride, full of twists and turns, and it's gonna keep you on the edge of your seat! Things start a bit slow as the characters are introduced and the whole backdrop is laid down, but then it transitions into a more intense read.

Overall, a very impressive read for those looking for a thriller.

Thanks to @Booktasters for the e-copy of the book in exchange of on an honest review.

Such beautiful storytelling with a mix of historical and cultural facts, and blending the past and present together perfectly. An accidental find that transformed their lives and that of their country forever.
Oh! To be on the run and in love! Travelling, solving mysteries, changing history, while being protected by the government.
I highly recommend. Such a beautiful piece

To blend history and fiction is tricky and to achieve a success out of it is even trickier. The Tales Pensieve listed The Himalayan Revelation and attracted by the book's historical-thriller theme, I immediately right clicked the mouse and chose the book to review. I wasn't disappointed; it’s a good read, one that I couldn't put down. Though I wish I could have said "extraordinary".

Debut author Pankaj Misra, knits a Historical-Thriller from the memories and research gathered from his exploration over the years.
Protagonists Gaurav and Natasha find themselves in a project to digitally recreate a historical site for the tourists. The research for the same takes them to Hampi. They discover that Hampi might be connected to Leh. The adventure ascends from there and many secrets lie before them ready to get revealed.

History and treasures and mystery they all go hand in hand. Always there's a thing which leads to another and then another.

This is how the story proceeds in the book and there's a lot of action, thrill, mystery and some authentic historical description which makes it all the way more fantastic to enjoy.

There are no dull moments in the book. But the book could have given a bit of more importance to the Vijayanagar tale in the middle of the story. Also the romance angle could have been left to a bare minimum in the book.

Overall it's an enthralling and a fantastic piece of historical fiction for the readers.

Historical fictions are always gripping and fun to read. So, when i was presented with the offer to review ‘The Himalayan Revelation’ by Pankaj Mishra, I was happily eager to do it. It takes great deal of courage to weave a thriller around facts, and past incidents; a minor slip somewhere can upset the whole equation.

Pankaj has done an excellent job of weaving together the majestic snow-clad Himalayas, the Hampi heritage site, the mighty rich Vijayanagar Empire (and its lost treasure) and the political tension of Indo-China border into a novel which is racy, pacy and gripping ...

I liked it and would readily recommend !

What I liked in the book was the past and present are linked well. They are also presented well to the reader, clearly marked in time and place, so there is no confusion. Pankaj’s language is also quite easy to read, and understand. The flipside is that the book felt a bit too long, and too varying in pace. Perhaps more a historical fiction than a thriller.

I presume this the author's first book.A creditable performance. The tempo of the book was maintained right from the beginning. For a largely historical account the book has been written in an interesting way. On the flip side a more professional editing would have made it better .
