Michael, the Earl of Danesbury was being hounded to marry Lady Alice Randall, a woman he did not love. Even the Prince of Wales was determined to force him into marriage. Michael fled to his dilapidated ancestral castle for the first time since inheriting his title. There he heard a girl singing and fell in love. She was Bettina, daughter of an eccentric Major, a genius with gardens plants and herbs. Determined to put the castle gardens in good order, Michael hired the Major and found himself becoming more and more enchanted with Bettina. But Lady Alice came in hot pursuit, determined to use her powerful connections to snare him. His only hope was to enlist Bettina's help. Together they took an extraordinary gamble, one that could only succeed if it was protected by love. Nice and easy read by Dame Barbara. Neither MC was all that developed, and be honest, the H seemed a little too passive for me. He was positively a wimp when it came to the wannabe OW, Alice. However, this was safe, the H seemed like a genuine nice man (no rake or libertine), and the secondary couple was cute too.
Listened to the audio book. Super ick. Partly because of the narrator, but the story wasn’t good either. Man had no backbone, girl apparently “spoke her mind” except she never did… simpering. Man/boy was kind of a coward. Boring plot. 2nd Barbara Cartland, very different than the other one
I really liked this one. Here damsel in distress is a hero and heroine is saving him though all the book even though during their first meeting he was not acting as proper gentleman should. Queen and Prince Regent appear here very cruel indeed. It was a sad beginning with that engagement party. Well, that's not a new thing to learn about hunting season opened on eligible bachelors, but it was sad to see that royal family took such an active part in the process even though everybody knew what was happening. And hero let us to believe that it wasn't an isolated incident and rather a known path to be taken by maidens' families. How disgusting. There is good chemistry between heroes and I like the second pair in too. I like how heroine could take care of herself and stood her ground in the presence of the hero and of his want-to-be-your-wife-at-any-cost Lady Alice. This is a really nice story.
