Titanian Chronicles: Journey of Destiny

Rate this book
Afeclin walked nervously to the entry of the cottage. He held his breath as he passed over the threshold. A little cradle was the only piece of furniture left in the building. Afeclin touched the cradle delicately with one finger. All of a sudden he fell backward onto the floor as an image of the fire burst into his mind... He had seen a horrified face that screamed amongst red hot flames. Found beyond the Elvin borders, Afeclin, a human child, is taken in and raised by an Elvin King. Now grown and longing to learn about the mystic arts, he embarks on a journey back into a land now unfamiliar. Accompanied by his elvin friend, Wolflang, they leave their homes to seek out their destiny. Unbeknown to Afeclin and Wolflang however, the warlord, Moorlan and his confederate, a dark mage, are preparing to bring war to the peaceful Land of Marrapassa, putting their lives and those they care about, in danger.

I was never going to be a writer...seriously.
Somehow despite my great love of telling and writing stories, writing as a career was just not a consideration at all... i had other plans. However i was kind of propelled towards it... or perhaps my characters and world were begging me to be released from their prison (which is my mind) to be able to frolic on paper. So here i am, having just released my book, the first of a trilogy, a teen fantasy adventure, Titanian Chronicles - Journey of Destiny.

While I don't have many fantasy novels on my shelves, I did want to read this one. And I wasn't disappointed. I enjoyed Leisl's characters and the world she created in Titania. The story was fast paced and kept me turning pages. I even found myself thinking about the book when I was away from it. Congratulations on a great debut novel Leisl.

Afeclin a human adopted by elves as a baby after the Great Human War, now an adult with some unusual magical abilities decides to venture out of the Elvin kingdom to search for a mythical wizard who can teach him as an apprentice. With his best friend Wolflang they soon discover the world outside the Elvin kingdom is a dangerous place with evil mages, trolls, bear like monsters and various other creatures. This is an imaginative and engrossing fantasy tale with awesome world building. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The only criticism I have is to do with the narrator. Although he did a fantastic job with accents (the Welsh goblin made me laugh) I don’t think the voice was right for the type of story.

A little lost, a little found is the experience I had with this book. The story was following multiple povs of various magical creatures. From elves, wizards and trolls to what not! The plotline is a moving adventure of following your path (destiny) and hints you towards the undermining line that destiny always has a role to play, no matter what you think you are doing... each one of us has roles to play. Overall it felt like an akwardly placed story with a few loveable charachters and fascinating names.

P.s it kinda ends on a cliff hanger, so I hope the author has more books coming 🤞

This was a great fantasy read by Leisl Kaberry. I hadn’t read the series prior to getting this book or heard about it even, and I am SOO glad that I did! This is her debut novel and was written a few years ago in 2013. The author does an amazing job enrapturing the reader in a world of elves, wizards, and more! The world is well built and reminds me of both a Lord of the Rings like world.

There are two MC in our book that we start with hearing about. One is Afeclin, who is a human character who is raised like an Elf. Then there is Wolflang. Wolflang is Afelcin’s friend in this book start. And there is one more character we are eventually introduced to, who is Lenna. Lenna is this female character who is strong of a character.

There is a lot talked about or insinuated on in this first book and I can not wait to see where this book is headed in the author’s future books!
I also loved the drawings/illustrations that are at various places in the author’s book. They are well drawn and give the readers some frame of reference when we are reading the book through to the end. And there is a glossary in the back of the book to help those like myself who want to know the meanings of the words in the book. I would have loved a pronunciation guide👏.

There are two more books in the series and this doesn’t end on a cliffhanger per say but you will want to know what happens next while reading the books!

A Journey of Destiny is precisely what is claims to be… a journey. It focuses on the relationships, dreams, and shortcomings of the characters as they venture far from the safety of home. While there are plenty of foes and allies to be met along the way, driving the story forward, the emphasis lies more on character than plot.

The world building is sweeping and gives the book the grandeur of a classic epic fantasy while also feeling like a cozy coming of age tale. In perfect sync with the writing, the narration balances on the line between classic and fresh. There is something familiar about Paul Metcalfe’s narration style, giving the impression of an old friend telling you a story that always needed to be told. His characterization is lively and varied, reminding the listener that this story is all about the people we meet throughout the pages.

I thoroughly enjoyed listening and am left wondering what comes next for our young explorers as they seek out their destinies.

Titanian Chronicle: Journey of Destiny by Leisl Kaberry
A pair of elves and a human raised by elves venture into the outside world. The venture is fraught with peril and they discover they have been cosseted and sheltered. They meet other beings and races and deal with prejudice in their travels.
Kaberry highlights naivety and foolishness in equal measure. Afeelin seeks his future in the mystical arts. Wolfang wants to spread his wings and see the world. Lenna is road kill to their ambitions.
The book provides a compendium of mythical creatures with action and violence.
It was an entertaining read.

The Plot

The story is true to the fantasy genre. There are elves, humans, dwarves , trolls and a few more new races thrown in. Then we have the journey / quest that the main characters have to follow. Kaberry displays a good knowledge of the genre as defined by the masters such as Tolkien, but she also displays great storytelling and imaginative ability as she adds her own touches. The plot centres around the journey two friends, Afeclin and Wolfgang, set out on, to explore the world beyond their Elven kingdom. Unknown to them the fiancée of Wolflang, Lenna is also following them. We follow the characters as they discover this new world which is alien to them and far harsher than the gentle Elven kingdom they are used to. Along the way we learn more about this wonderful and richly layered world Kaberry has created. We are introduced to more colourful characters (good and bad) which makes for a fast-paced adventure you get carried along with. The three friends eventually separate to follow their own destinies, allowing the reader to see a lot more of the land of Marrapassa. I don’t want to reveal much more, spoiling the fun for others, but let me just say that the story was a lot of fun, with a very imaginative and well crafted universe, and a story that promises a lot more in the upcoming books.

The Characters

The three main characters are Afeclin, Wolflang and Lenna, with all the chapters following one of these characters. I found all three of these characters quite likeable and believable. Afeclin for me was the most interesting as he is human but brought up as an elf. His past is pretty vague and finding out about his past is going to be the key to the story I suspect. Lenna is a strong female character in a genre which often tends to focus on the male characters more, I think we will see her grow a lot more over the series and become central to the story. There is a lot of room for character development over the series as they follow their destiny and learn and grow. There are secrets hinted at and reveals to come about the characters, which will keep the reader entranced and waiting for the next book. I found the character of Nagrin quite fascinating despite him being one of the bad guys, he is quite threatening and softly menacing one minute with a softer side that is displayed the next.

Summary and Rating

I have given this book 4 stars.Overall I really enjoyed this book and found myself getting through this pretty quickly. it’s an easy read and exciting and fast paced. This book is true to the fantasy genre with a lot of originality, so if you like fantasy books you will most likely really enjoy this. Another nice feature of the book was some great illustrations sprinkled throughout the book. I suspect my kindle does not do them full justice, but it is nice to see some visual representations of things described in the book.

There was a lot to like in “Titanian Chronicles: Journey of Destiny (Volume 1)” by Leisl Kaberry. Kaberry built a legit fantasy world replete with elements that call back to the feel of the legends of King Arthur combined with the work of Tolkien. The author takes the unique step of infusing humanity into her world with the mythical races in a way that is seamless and complimentary. Afeclin is one with his environment. Kaberry’s setting has defined breaks. Not safe zones per say but boundaries. She gives us a perfect introduction to the story with a scene in which two characters interact. One is a powerful and dangerous man and the other is an innkeeper working for him. The innkeeper asks the man how he plans to staff his establishments. The dangerous man, without a seeming thought, says “slave girls….and I’ll take that one,” the innkeepers daughter. What follows is a standoff in which the dangerous man gets what he wants. This is a world without rules.

There are many characters featured in the somewhat short chapters and constant shifts of “Titanian Chronicles: Journey of Destiny (Volume 1).” One of the standouts is the character of Lenna, an Elvin woman engaged to Wolfgang. Lenna is clearly very strongly traditional. At one point in the story she expresses distaste for someone who is, in her opinion, as an example of what Elvin women who don’t marry become. When she finds herself in the world outside of what she knows she feels she must find Wolfgang to survive. Fans of strong characters may roll their eyes as they read this but while Lenna is traditional, she is not weak. The character is a prime example that could translate to life that few people are only one dimensional. Just because she has opinions readers might not share and sound like your great-grandmother, there is still a wisdom, vibrancy and value.

Kaberry is a native of Australia so may use different idioms than typically used in American English. Because of the nature of the novel and the care given to dialogue that would be authentic to the story though more casually done than one might see in Tolkien, I didn’t notice any point where that unique accent would stump a reader not of the region.

In her debut novel, fantasy writer Leisl Kaberry has delivered a grand tale of adventure and intrigue, with a promise of more excitement to come. Her adventure begins in the elven kingdom, where two friends (one an elf - Wolflang, and one a human adopted by elves - Afeclin) decide to abandon their comfortable lives and go in search of the human's mysterious origins. He was found as a baby, the sole survivor in a destroyed village.
Their departure is complicated by Wolflang's elf fiancee - Lenna following them in jilted pursuit. She is also loved by Afeclin and seems in a hurry to marry the reluctant Wolflang, which makes for an interesting love triangle.
The human, Afelclin, is found to have magical powers and wishes to find a wizard to study under. He searches for the most powerful wizard in the land and leaves his friends to pursue his own quest. Wolflang wants to join the Scorpius Legion, and poor Lenna meets with trouble. I thought it a bit unfortunate that the three main characters separate and each has their own completely different storyline. I suspect that their stories will intertwine over the series, but for this novel, they are not related.
Kaberry writes with a very descriptive style and I found myself immersed in her wonderful fantasy world of Titania. I love her descriptions of the scenery, although sometimes it did slow the pace of the novel.
There are some wonderful ideas introduced in the book including the lawfabex, habatchiees, shemalks, Afeclin's gem, and a pretty darn cool ship. Leisl's Twitter hashtag is Lawfabex and I suspect this is her favourite creature. It has the front half of a bear and back half of a wolf, with a horn on its forehead. I thought these fierce creatures a great original concept and hope they will feature in future episodes.
The story started a little slowly, but turns into an exciting adventure, where you never know what will happen next. The ending leaves you wanting more, so hopefully the next installment will be out sometime soon. I recommend this book for fantasy readers of all ages and especially folks who enjoy the Hunters of Reloria series.

Titanian Chronicles: Journey of Destiny melds elements of Tolkienian fantasy with Potterian whimsicality. Is this a good thing? Absolutely! Whilst it is clearly a derivative (what isn’t?) of legendary tales of adventure, its unpredictability pulls you in to a fantasy world so vividly imagined, where sprightly creatures and beastly hybrids lurk and spring to action.

The world-building is epic! It's almost cinematic in depth and detail. Author Leisl Kaberry has created an immersive fantasy world that veered away from the familiar. My only gripe (albeit a minor one) is that it’s quite a struggle to remember names and places. But then that’s what the glossary of terms at the end of the book is for.

The main characters have distinct voices and it’s commendable that the author did not fall into the trap of creating characters that talk, act, and feel the same way. Authors have to really be in character while writing to pull this one off. I felt that Lenna’s character is more developed than Afeclin’s but a little understated.

Overall, Titanian Chronicles offered something new to the realm of fantasy – something that’s hard to come by in a genre replete with ‘more of the same’ stories.

Lord of the Rings meets Narnia!

I’m so glad that the author approached me for a book review. Titanian Chronicles is imaginative and beautifully written. Although the plot can be slow-going, the stirring brotherly relationship between Afeclin and Wolflang makes up for it. Reading Titanian Chronicles was a pleasure as the author has the ability to describe the wonders of Titanian Chronicles with her pen. Every detail has been put into play for a reason. With their long tufts of plumage on top of their heads that stuck up in the air when singing their sweet tune…, Tall traffita trees with their elongated willowy white trunks and long slender leaves that draped from the top of their stem, Kaberry gives life to the richly atmospheric tale.

Memorable quote:

Never lose sight of who you are and make the work you do always be for a good purpose.

I received a complimentary copy of Titanian Chronicles in exchange of my honest review.

The Journey of Destiny is a very good start for the Titanian Chronicles series. I always have to compare those who write fantasy dealing with wizards and elves to Terry Brooks, whom I consider the master of this genre. Leisl has done a commendable job in her initial volume. The three main characters, Afeclin, Wolflang, and Lenna are very likable and are sure to capture the hearts of readers. My only problem with the book is that it does tend to drag in some places, so I think Leisl needs to work a little more on keeping the pace up. I'm certainly looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Fantasy books are not a genre that I have much experience with. Titanian Chronicles: Journey of Destiny (Volume 1) had me caught up in the lives of Wolflang, an elf, and his friend Aflecin, a human adopted by the elfin King of Tebelligan. Leisl Kaberry writes with great description as these two unlikely friends take off on a journey to discover what lies outside their peaceful lands. Their adventure to seek their destiny brings them face to face with thieves and murderers, something unlike they have ever seen in Tebelligan.

I look forward the Volume 2.

This is a good beginning to a series. It follows Afeclin, Wolfgang and Lenna as they venture out of their homeland into the outside world. Lenna is on her own and while she can handle herself, there are things there she hadn’t seen or experienced before. I liked her part of the story immensely and I can’t wait to see how she handles herself in the next book. They all meet some interesting characters along the way.

I love stories about elves, dwarves and magicians and especially, look forward to Afeclin’s journey as he becomes a full magician.

I enjoyed it. It begins with an intriging set up to the three protagonists respective "Journey of Destinies" with various twists and tense situations as the story continues. Liesl wasnt afraid of having the characters face unpleasent consequences and misfortunes, ultimately ending up with two in favourable circumstances and one in a rather tough spot. Nevertheless, she sets herself up nicely for the next book. Which I was left wanting to read.

Afeclin has grown up as the lone human in the land of elves, Tebelligan.  He was found orphaned after the war with a mysterious glowing blue rock hanging over his head.  Taken in by the Elven King, Afeclin has grown up with privilege, yet has always felt out of place.  Now, Afeclin would like to follow his calling to be a wizard, which means leaving Tebelligan.  Afeclin's best friend, Wolflang would like to come with him; however, that means leaving his love, Lenna behind.  As soon as they hit the road, Afeclin and Wolflang learn that things are very different outside of Tebelligan.  A war is brewing, young women are being taken as slaves and troops are being rounded up.  Afeclin and Wolflang find another group of travelers that help them navigate their new surroundings, but also bring more trouble.  Eventually Afeclin finds the home of the wizard he would like to train under and Wolflang finds a new purpose, but Leena, who refused to be left behind has found herself in a far more dangerous position.

Journey of Destiny is an epic fantasy about finding your place. I was intrigued from the beginning as Afeclin decided to find out more about his past as the only human in the land of elves.   I was very interested in how Afeclin felt as the only human, his relationship with his father as well as with Wolflang and Leena.  As the first book in the series, there is a lot of description of the many races, the land, the governments and communities that sometimes slows down the pacing.  I enjoyed exploring the different parts of the Land of Marrapassa along with the many different inhabitants.  There were many different storylines to follow and the different character's point of view.  I was most focused on Afeclin's story and gained interest as he became closer to reaching his wizard.  Wolflang's story gained momentum and he became a stronger character as he realized he could affect change within Marrapassa.  Lenna's story weaves in and out, but is potentially the most dangerous and meaningful as she is swept up as a spoil of war.  Journey of Destiny is clearly the beginning of a much bigger story and ends with things being put into place for the next part of this journey.

This book was received for free in return for an honest review.

This story was wonderfully surprising. These days I am very hit and miss on a lot of fantasy stories. But this one was super surprising. I will say that the cover did not do this book justice at all. And for the future the author might want to get it updated to something more suited with other books that are going around. This one was very YA in its telling and had a very good pace that kept me reading. I never felt bored or wanting to put it down and at 300+ pages that is very good. I loved how imaginative this story was with its creatures and beings. I felt like it brought something new to the world of fantasy. Which we don't get a lot these days. As for the characters I loved them from the first few chapters. I hope to have the time to pick up the next book.

Journey of Destiny is the first in Kaberry’s trilogy and is filled with a world that has been transformed by her writing and characters in Titania. I really enjoyed reading this book from beginning to end, especially with the way the story plays out! Afeclin is such an interesting character and his journey was even more fascinating! This is definitely a fantasy series that I need to continue! I highly recommend for the world building and development of characters.
