I just finished Sons of God’s Generals by Joshua Frost. Oh my goodness! What a great book. I was excited to read it anyway but it surpassed my expectations. The book didn’t focus so much on the powerful leaders that were the parents of these children but instead focused on them as parents, real people who make real mistakes but whom God used time and again. They all shared a passion to be obedient to God and to place others salvation above their own needs. They all struggled in their own way trying to balance ministry and what God was asking of them with wanting to be present in the lives of their family. They all made mistakes; yet they were humble enough to ask forgiveness of their children and continue to choose obedience - first to God, and then obedience as parents, children themselves, siblings, friends, and finally as leaders.

When I was reading about all the sacrifices these great leaders were asked by God to make in the lives of their families, it reminded me of something I read in Heaven by Randy Alcorn. They will receive their reward in Heaven with even more time with their loved ones than they had down here on Earth. That’s exciting to me. The legacy that was left for these children and that they chose to embrace gives hope that they will be in Heaven with their parents, taking part in all the family memories that were missed previously.

I loved the different writing styles with each chapter as they were told in the words of each child. I loved how the children were honest about the problems in their families but also transparent in how God used those mistakes or the humbling of selves and asking forgiveness to do powerful things.

The message I received the loudest had less to do with any particular leader or the child of that leader but instead a very personal spiritual truth that I have been asking God about for months now. It gives me peace and gives me a direction for my prayers and hope that I, too, will receive an answer when it’s God’s time.

This is a book that will appeal to so many. It’s more than memoires of great leaders, although it’s wonderful as that as well. It just goes deeper because each one of these contributors, although not always choosing to walk in the direction that God desires from the beginning, have all come back to God and allowed Him to work in their lives for the best. That’s probably the best message that comes across in each story - God can take anything that happens in our lives and use it for His good and for good to come out of it. It gives hope to everyone as we all have messed up - big, small - it doesn’t matter because God is the restorer in everyone’s life if we allow Him. That’s the key right there - if we will allow Him.

I received this book for free from Book Club Network in exchange for my honest review.

What an encouraging and inspiring book! Sometimes, in trying to raise a godly family, I get disheartened by what seems to be a terrible record of God-fearing parents turning out children who want nothing to do with the faith. Even in Scripture, this pattern seems to be repeated more often than not. And in our culture today, the stories of rebellious PKs (I mean, we coined the term "PK") seem to be the norm. And yet! This book offers an abundant amount of hope in the testimonies of those who are now part of generations of serving the Lord. It was incredibly easy to read, and as each chapter was the story of one individual and one family, every one was different, and it was very helpful to sort of get an overview of everyone's insights. I laughed, I cried, I gleaned lots of wisdom, and I came away with renewed hope, earnestly petitioning God to give my children this inheritance. Great great book! Highly recommended! About the Author:

Joshua and his wife, Holly Nicole Mack Frost, reside in Redding, CA with their two children. Joshua moved to Redding to become a part of Bill and Beni Johnson’s Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry. Joshua and Holly’s life ministry at present is to continue to be mentored by Generals. Presently Joshua is on Staff with Bethel Church as one of the Custodian Managers.

My Review:

We all as part of God's family have a part or role in His army. And as you travel the long, narrow way you will soon see others that have a higher ranking that you meaning they have been traveling that road a lot longer then you have. These leaders or mentors are considered to be God's Generals---those people that can be an example and to help keep us "newbies" accountable because they have already been there and done that. Their knowledge and advice is priceless---and so needed. The author of Sons of God's Generals, has written a book that highlights the fruits grown by these mentors and their stories in which they helped these from a younger generation reach a better potential in God's Army through their guidance and perseverance. This book was a great read with tons of encouragement!

We will soon be embarking on Pastoral ministry, and the chapter I enjoyed the most was the first chapter where the person reflecting was a pastor's kid growing up. I wonder about this subject the most, because soon my children will be classified as "pastor kids" and we are worried about what effect this will have on their lives. We try so hard to instill in them a love for God that can not be burnt out by the flames of this world, so we are putting it in God's hands---number one because they are safe there. The person reflecting spoke of authenticity and this is definitely something we try to live out. We are the same at home as we are at church.

Many times we think that we actually scare potential "friends" away because of this fact about us. Authenticity scares people mainly because they are afraid that they too must be authentic and maybe they aren't ready for that or they have things that they would rather keep to themselves. We on the other hand want you to be real with us just like we are real with you. And he was dead on when he said it develops a trust between the individuals. We need to be authentic and real with each other it helps us to grown in Christ! We all need help to be better at revealing our true selves to each other and we also need to be released from the fear of doing so.

Inheriting Spiritual Leadership
This is a book that highlights the lives of 8 different people who grew up in families that spent their time in the world’s spotlight because of the work of the parents. The parents of each of them are influential, in some spiritual way, to the world. Be sure to begin by reading the endorsements as this introduces you to each of the spiritual leaders that are represented. I was not familiar with all these people, so this part helped me understand what the goal of their mission work is.
The common thread through each chapter is that “normal” is what you live – to a child. These extraordinary lives to you and I felt very normal to the children of these leaders because that’s all they knew growing up. I think another common thread is that these “generals” or successful leaders, owe some of that success to their authenticity – they are the same at home as what the public sees, which builds trust in those that follow their work. A key component to their success is that they all lead by example.
I like that each chapter is its own story of one child growing up with extraordinary parents and how this influenced their life. It makes it easy to read in short intervals. The reader will quickly realize that family issues and parenting pitfalls are the same for everyone, no matter the environment or circumstances.
This book has encouragement for everyone. By accepting God’s love you can change your life. Living for God can surround you with powerful goodness and get you through life’s turmoil.

What are we passing on?
Eight children of high profile church leaders share their stories of what it was like growing up and growing in their own relationship with God. As diverse as individuals can be, their stories have the common denominator of pursuit of and getting love and, ultimately, giving love away: both with their busy parents and their God.

Sons of God’s Generals was both hard and exciting to read. Growing up as a PK & MK, I understand before it is said. But, in reading their journeys I relive my own—each pain, wrestle and (finally) place of rest.

Now as a mother of a son whose parents are in ministry, I read their roads traveled with a third view: my boy! I do not wanting him to experience the aloneness, premature responsibility and that familiarity with God, without experiencing vibrant relationship with God.

I have a fourth perspective of passing it on to the next generation. Will our ceiling be their floor? Will we set them up for broader, higher, deeper with God?

I love Mary Ahn’s quote of Victor Hugo in Les Miserables. “To love another person is to see the face of God.” Thank you to all of the authors for candid vulnerability and a good dose of hope.

Sons of God's Generals: Unlocking the Power of Godly Inheritance by Joshua Frost is a book about the children of high profile pastors, missionaries, and leaders in the church. Each of the sons and daughters have written a chapter in the book telling what it was like growing up in the household of their well known family. They answer the question, "What was it like growing up in this household, and how did it affect my relationship with God?"
I loved this book! I enjoyed learning about how each of sons and daughters made their relationship with Jesus their own. Some stayed close to Him throughout their childhood, and some rebelled against God, but in the end, fell in love with Jesus as their Savior.
As a parent, I enjoyed reading how each of the parents were willing to ask for forgiveness, humble themselves before the Lord, and reconcile with their children when they needed to. It inspired me to be a better parent, and gave me hope for my children.
I highly recommend this book.

Sons of God’s Generals: Unlocking the Power of Godly Inheritance
By Joshua Frost
Publ: Destiny Image Publishers c.2014

This book is a compilation of stories from the children of some of today’s best-known generals on the front lines of the Gospel. These are the children of ministers, missionaries, prophets, evangelists, healers, and witnesses for God. These stories give you an insight into what it is like to be raised by these giants of the faith. They are honest, sometimes funny, sometimes poignant, insightful, and entertaining. These stories will encourage you and uplift you as they give you a look into the lives of those called by God to lead the charge in these last days.
I strongly recommend this book to those interested in a closer look at living your life all-out for the Gospel.

This is a book I found to be interesting but not quite my style. I like biographies but I guess I prefer a longer length, instead of just a few pages long. This is my personal preference so please don't think I am being negative. The book itself was excellent in learning a tad about the sons of some people who may be well known to you. I hadn't ever heard of these people so I had a learning experience all around:) The authors all take a few pages and tell about their families, their ministries and what it was like growing up in their homes. The good, the bad, the privileges and the drawbacks. Many things are not any different than in a normal household, but others you may find interesting to read about. Again, this is a book that would be good for sons and fathers to read together, or even as a family.

"Sons of God's Generals" is a book about about PKs(Pastors kids) and MKs(Ministers kids) Who grew up in a modern day household of some of today's Christian Generals of the faith in God's army. This book contains stories told from the perspective of the now adult children in a way no else could tell it. You will read and learn what it was like living in the family of generals of the faith. When I first began to read this book I couldn't put it down! I cried and laughed hysterically. These stories will touch your heart and give you courage to step out on faith and do the impossible. This book will help you understand that life with generals does not necessarily mean you will have a problem-free life. Everyone in life experience trials, test, tribulations and heartbreaks no one is perfect even the best of us. So lay back have a cup of coffee and enjoy this heartwarming book.

What a great revelation!

This book made me con ofsider a few things. We all hear about PKs and how it seems they don't follow in their parents footsteps. But reading this book made me realize the sacrifice pastors' families make and how important it is for us, to pray for them. All the children of these leaders are who they are today because of their parents commitments to Jesus. Some mistakes were made but God is faithful. I was also touched by the authenticity displayed by those men and women of God. I thank God for giving the idea to the author to compile this book.

3.5 Stars. The copy of Sons of God's Generals I purchased does not have chapters about the Bickles or Engles (though listed in the book summary on Goodreads). It does contain one about James and Michal Ann Goll (not listed in the summary) written by their son, Justin. This chapter is my favorite, providing wisdom for me as a parent on how to steward prophetic promises for my kids. Those who want a brief look at the behind-the-scenes lives of the Arnotts, Golls, Ahns, Johnsons, Banovs, Clarks, Bakers or Frosts… this book is for you.
