Take a minute to gauge your relationship with God. Do you underestimate the power of prayer? This daily guide, with insights from General Authorities, scriptures, personal experiences, and commentary, will enrich and empower your prayers.
This gave me a nice way of taking a moment to read and think about my habits surrounding prayer on a daily basis. Every chapter has a short personal story from the author, some scripture references and some thoughts by him and though some of them were less applicable for me than others, I enjoyed the challenge of thinking about how I can improve my personal relationship with god.
If you’ve been in Sunday School and/or seminary for a few years then you’ve probably heard most of these suggestions on how to better your prayers, but it’s still a great refresher on how make your prayers more effective. If you are new to prayer then this book is the place to start.
Prayer is one of those topics that seems simple yet I feel like I can always learn more. Yes, sometimes I do feel that I underestimate the power of prayer. I've really needed this book this past week and the thought-provoking questions that are included.
There are 31 chapters in this book which makes it easy to read one each day. I started it too late to do that for my review but I can see the benefit of reading it that way and I will do that when I read it again. Each chapter starts with a quote and then the author shares his thoughts on each topic. There is also a section called "Prayer Self-Examination" where he asks questions to either ponder or act on, then "Scriptures for Consideration and Marking" and "A Parting Thought."
I like that it was easy to read and with the questions and scriptures, the option is there to dig even deeper into each topic. There are helps with personal, family and public prayers. One of my favorite chapters is "12: Teach Them Early" where he shares quite a few quotes about the importance of parents teaching their children to pray. I especially love one from President Kimball where he basically says that no mother would send her child to school in the winter without proper clothes, yet numerous parents send their children to school without the protection of prayer.
There are lots of other great quotes, scriptures and the author's own experiences and thoughts which make this book a treasure that I will read for years to come!
I received a copy of this book to review. My opinion is 100% my own.
Interestingly enough this book came at a time when I really needed it!
I started feeling ill late one evening and before I even got into bed I knew that I was going to be up all night with the illness.
As I was praying for relief I started to read this book...an intriguing thing to be reading about prayer while praying.
It made me really think about my prayers and how I pray and what I pray for...
This book is AMAZINGLY WONDERFUL!
The author gives "31 teachings to strengthen our connection with Heaven."
Within each teaching there are "daily guides-- with insights from General Authorities, scriptures, personal experiences, and commentary, that will enrich and empower your prayers."
Many of us know that "there is no appointment necessary" for prayers...
I was so grateful for that because I was praying from about 10pm to 5am...not your standard scheduling time frame.
But do we realize that when the Lord seems to give us NO ANSWER he is really answering with "you are trusted."
"Elder Richard G. Scott teaches -- that we should express gratitude when no answers come."
Do we pray "only in times of crisis?"
Do we "allow our weaknesses to keep us from connecting with Heaven?"
Do we understand "the power of music" as a form of prayer?
How does gratitude play into prayer?
And "can one do evil with a prayer on their lips?"
SO MANY THINGS TO PONDER IN THIS BOOK!
You can read it in one night like I did...OR...You can read one chapter a day for a month.
PHENOMENAL INSIGHTS! POWERFUL TEACHINGS! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!
This book has come along at a time when I really need the counsel offered within about the importance of prayer. I really appreciated the four principles that he offers at the beginning. First, that prayer takes work, like all relationships, a relationship with God takes time and effort. Second, "A person's spirituality will never be greater than the quality of his or her prayer life." Third, quantity does matter. And fourth, prayer is often the first thing to go.
I found these principles all worth thinking about and I will undoubtedly ponder them more in the coming days and months. The format of the book is perfect for reading quickly or taking time to ponder the quotes, experiences, scriptures, and self-examination questions provided. The thoughts and perspectives on prayer that the author shares are all good ones and well worth considering. The book is perfect for those like me who need some guidance in more fulling taking advantage of and understanding the concept of prayer. Highly recommended.
