Presenting a series of one-shots, focusing on some of the best-loved (or loathed) characters from the TRANSFORMERS Universe. The spotlight falls on SHOCKWAVE, as the coldly logical DECEPTICON undertakes a plan of devastating scope and ambition, one that will send shockwaves through the entire saga!
Simon Christopher Francis Furman is a British comic book writer who is best known for his work on Hasbro/Tomy's Transformers franchise, starting with writing Marvel's initial comic book to promote the toyline worldwide, as well as foundations for both Dreamwave Production's and IDW Publishing's takes on the Generation 1 minifranchise.
This probably should have gotten a 5 star review from me but I'll be honest I'm a little biased in the fact that I just don't like the Spotlights too much. They all just feel a little too short for me to care about them. This is definitely one of the better ones. Is it because Shockwave is one of my favorite characters solely because of how wildly interesting he is to read? Maybe. Really though, this is the first Spotlight I have read that I legitimately paused to just soak in how good it was.
Idw comics offering. Suitable for teens and adults. Good color artwork. A mini comic featuring Shockwave. An un emotional transformer who always takes the long view.
At first, I found it tiring to read on the drive home from buying it from T T Retro, but when I got home, I found it more interesting that I ever had! Let this be a lesson: don't, and I mean don't, read any comics in the car. Who knows, a Decepticon sickness implant might land in your tummy!
I've never been a huge fan of IDW’s take on Shockwave, but this is worth a read, especially if you’re interested in reading the rest of Phase 1.
The narration works better here than in some of the other Spotlight issues, as this kind of reflective mode makes sense for a character looking back over his plans in order to try and comprehend events.
The central idea is simple but strong: contrasting Shockwave’s idea of logic and the desire for revenge felt by the Dinobots.
Overall, it’s very short and, again, simple, but establishes some key details for the continuity and uses the contrasting characters well.
