The Windrider

Rate this book
Oa had been the prime contender for the throne of Dynast -- closer than any other heirs to holding the reins of Empire, and all the power, intrigue, luxury and illusion that went with them .... Until the reigning Dynast put an insurmountable obstacle in her path: she must kill her true love in the deadly High Dance or forsake her life's ambition.

Avoiding her fate and fleeing downriver to the unknown lands of the west, Oa finds herself on a high plateau where those with power ride remarkable beasts whose soaring flight is like the primeval rush of the wind itself, and whose riders sail between earth and sky. And Oa knows that she would fight any battle and face any odds to feel the freedom of speed and space on the untamed back of a Windsteed!

A strage and savage tale that is surprisingly raw. I enjoyed it though I was at once drawn in and repulsed by the heroine. It's a tale of running away from one's ordained destiny. Shows the author's quite ruthless worldview and acertains that brutality will win out, though it need not be without some tenderness. For an escape, you could do worse.

this book sucked me in quite wholly. first few chapters were kinda dry tho. and i had some issues with some of the latent racism and the rigid hierarchy that was entrenched in this book. i thought maybe at the end that all of that would be turned around... but it wasnt. in fact, i was disgusted with the end of this book. but if i could ignore all of that... then it was really a sweep away fantasy novel, with a very strong, but also very self righteous and selfish female protagonist. but god damn do i love these scifi/fantasy books that have societies based entirely around the use of horses. love it. love it. oh yeah and it was pretty dykey too, which was a nice bonus. but it did not make up for the sellout ending.
