Tip of a Bone by Christine Finlayson is a fast-paced mystery novel, which is bound to compel you from its very first pages.

Thanks to the author, Christine Finlayson, for sending me over a copy of her book, in return for an honest review.

The mystery is all about the death of an environmental activist, Harley, estranged brother to Maya, who comes to Oregon, to start a new life with his brother, leaving behind her broken marriage. But when she comes to Newport, she figures out that, Harley is blamed by everyone, calling him an arsonist, as he died mysteriously in a fire, which was arson. Deep down, Maya knew that his brother was innocent, although she didn't knew him very well. She wears the cap of a sleuth and starts a journey to find out the murderer and reason behind her brother's death; as a result, she got nearly killed and was being stalked by a murderer. Determined, she never diverts from her goal. Hence, with her strong determination, it takes her more into the deepest, darkest worlds of crime.

The whole story is set in Oregon coast, and the author has represented it well by making it fit in well with the plot. The story-telling was very smooth; too many details were never divulged at a time, meaning she knew how to keep her readers on the loop. Not to mention about those shocking twists and turns, and this makes the book more interesting. The characters were complex, dark, and fits right into the plot. Maya, the heroine/protagonist, is very strong, determined, not scared even for a single second, and the best part is that she sees right through everything.

Here's a very promising mystery novel, so grab a copy of this book which will keep you on your edges till the very last pages.

I’ve been to the Oregon Coast several times - including the scenic town of Newport, where this novel is set - and this book is the real deal. You can almost smell the salt in the air, hear the crash of the surf and see the flutter of seagull’s wings.

But Tip of a Bone digs beneath Newport’s touristy surface and finds dark deeds doing. A dedicated environmentalist is missing and feared dead. Her fellow activists are on the warpath, trying to stop commercial developers from ripping up new chunks of forest land. And caught smack in the middle is California transplant Maya Rivers.

Maya has come to Oregon to be reunited with her long-lost brother, little suspecting that he’s one of the most committed protesters. When a bayfront building is burned to the ground, Maya’s brother is blamed, and her whole world goes sideways. She’s determined to find out who’s truly responsible and make them pay. And that’s where the bone comes in. Is it human - or does it belong to an endangered species? Somebody knows, and will stop at nothing, including murder, to keep Maya from finding out.

Maya Rivers is a likeable heroine, and Christine Finlayson is a likeable author. The writing is smooth, the characters complex and the dialogue rings true. Tip of the Bone is more than just a trip to the beach. It’s a very enjoyable read.

Maya Rivers has a big problem. The entire town of Newport, Oregon (where she had few friends to begin with) thinks her brother Harley is an arsonist, a terrorist, and quite likely a murderer. Her brother’s newly pregnant fiancé is losing faith and in danger of losing her job. Harley’s former friends, a group of environmental activists, are facing scrutiny from the F.B.I., and ready to throw him under the bus.

Maya does not know her brother well. They were separated as children and only recently reacquainted. But she knows in her gut he’s innocent of these charges and is willing to risk everything – her job, her freedom, and even her life – to prove it.

Tip of a Bone is an intriguing mystery/thriller from an author with a fresh new voice and a fresh new slant on the environmental issues facing the Oregon Coast. I enjoyed the quirky humor and quirkier characters, and found the book mighty dang hard to put down.

I received this book through a GoodReads giveaway.

Tip of a Bone is a solid first novel by Christine Finlayson. A mystery with a generous dash of suspense, the first chapter sucks you in with a well conveyed sense of urgency and tension. What follows is the story of a woman compelled to investigate her brother's death and the mysteries connected to it, no matter what obstacles are thrown in her path.

Having moved to the Oregon coast to reconnect with her environmental activist brother and recover from a painful divorce, Maya is a well drawn protagonist that you want to root for. Throughout the book, the level of description was pitch perfect for environment, action and characters.

I did skim over three scenes in the book. To avoid spoilers, I'll just say that two of these were the type of scenes that I would fast forward through on a DVD while trying not to curl up in a tension ball and the third was where I was exasperated with Maya for making a really stupid personal decision.

This is definitely a page turner and an enjoyable read.

Maya Rivers moved to the coastal town of Newport, Oregon after her father died and her marriage imploded. Part of the reason was to get closer to her brother Harley.Even though working as a waitress wasn't her idea of a long-term career, it did put food on the table, and paid her bills. She finds Harley involved in an environmental group, the Coast Defenders, and even though he claims they are non-violent and don't engage in damaging property, some people think otherwise. With acts of vandalism increasing, arson fires on fishing boats, and one of the activists gone missing, things look bad for his group. But when an arson turns deadly, Harley becomes the prime suspect. Maya is determined to prove his innocence.

I loved this book. Partly because it was set in Newport, a place I've been several times, and partly because it was well-written. This is a debut novel for Christine Finlayson, and I hope she writes more. I'm looking forward to the next one in the series.

I loved the vulnerable, flawed, determined heroine of this mystery. Maya just never quits trying to find why her brother died, despite poverty, injury, and threats to her life. She makes mistakes, but she's smart and brave and her loyalty to family and friends is touching. Her hard-won but disconnected discoveries fit together at the end for a frightening and ultimately satisfying climax. A fine read set on the Oregon coast, where weather and scenery are characters themselves.

Tip of a Bone is all about mystery. There are brief touches on romance but it doesn’t really play a part.

Maya moves from California to Oregon after her divorce. Same old story. Husband falls for younger woman, gets her pregnant, starts a new life. Old wife, like she never was.

The move gives her a chance to get to know her brother, Harley. As young kids, their parents divorced and each parent took one of the children. Maya was raised by her mother, having no contact with her father or Harley.

Just when they are starting to connect as friends, as siblings, Harley dies in a mysterious fire. The authorities say it was arson, the fire set by her brother, and he succumbed to smoke inhalation. Maya suspects something else.

As she questions his friends and fiance, she must stir up something, because she’s now being stalked, someone has broken into her apartment, and she’s nearly killed when a truck runs her off the road.

Now it’s a race to solve the mystery before she’s killed too.

What drew me to this book was the mention of eco-activists. There are the big companies coming in to set up their condos and the environmentalists who try to stop development, doing things like tree hugging and lying down in a busy intersection to stop traffic. Then, an activist vanishes and someone ups the ante to arson, burning equipment, a boat, and buildings.

One thing I missed was a connection to the characters. I enjoyed Maya, her divorce and subsequent struggles to find a path hit home. Been there before. But I didn’t really connect with anyone else in the story. Her brother, Harley, sounded promising if I’d had more time with him. Others played their part, adding to the list of suspects, but I didn’t much care about them.

While I didn’t particularly connect to a couple, they did make me wonder what they were. Good guys or bad guys?

Nick seemed like a nice guy while Tomas seemed scary. Both were part of the Coast Defenders group. Nick became suspect when right in the middle of some heavy petting, he stopped to answer his phone. Hmm…interested in Maya or what she knows? And Tomas was a looming hulk, gruff like a bear. He made no bones about how he felt towards Maya sticking her nose in their business.

About half way into the mystery I had my suspect tagged. It wasn’t blatant, but I had a good idea he was guilty. Still had fun following Maya as she did her snooping and the ending was quite good. I got my man and you’ll find out if Maya got hers.

I received this book for my honest and unbiased review.
I hear the author is writing a suspense novel and I'll be checking it out.

I received a complimentary paperback copy for review from the author/publisher.

Tip of a Bone by Christine Finlayson is an exciting mystery that I couldn't put down. I like the characters and the setting. I love that there is a map at the beginning to give you the lay of the land. The town was a perfect setting for the story and the characters fit right in. Maya was a strong main character. She was likable and smart. I like how relentless she is when it comes to doing what is right and finding out the truth. The story was written very well and the plot was full of twists and turns. While I read and continued guessing who the bad guy was, I was very intrigued. There were a few different characters who were 'bad' so it kept me guessing. This was a really enjoyable mystery and the author did a great job at keeping the suspense throughout the book.

I'd love for you to read my review on Brooke Blogs!

Talk about a good beach read. This one is set on the Oregon coast and is perfect for toting along when you need escape into a story that holds your attention. Newport, which I've visited many times, is a real town with a few quirky characters like the ones in Tip of A Bone. (The villains, as far as I know, are found only in the book.) The main character, Maya, has plenty of trouble and narrow escapes as she tries to clear her brother's name and solve a mystery, but she's a good sleuth. The author brings in surprises that keep the pages turning, and she knows how to create atmosphere. Salt air, clam chowder, boats bobbing at the wharf, rain and fog are all here, bringing the place to life on the pages.

really enjoyed this mystery. I had my suspicions about a character and turns out I was right. I didn't have any clues to base this on other than gut instinct was telling me this person was up to something. Interesting mix of characters, good balance between good and bad characters. Sometimes I wanted to shake Maya and tell her to not do what she was doing because it could get her in trouble or hurt/killed!

Excellent first novel. This was a fast read, mostly because the story moves at a rapid pace, and I wanted to know what happened next. Any criticism I might have is the use of questions at the end of each chapter to fill in the reader regarding the protagonist's thoughts. I really enjoyed the story's use of a familiar setting.

This last months book club read, a mystery set on the Oregon coast. Simply written, quick, easy read, rapidly
evolving story line. I enjoyed the book even though light mysteries are not typically my book of choice. Anyone who enjoys those types of books will thoroughly enjoy this book. Everyone in my book club gave it a thumbs up.

This is a well-written book set in Newport, OR on the Pacific Coast. An activist has disappeared just before Maya Rivers moves to town to re-unite with her brother Harley. He is part of an activist group who want to keep the coast free from excessive development. This is page turner with a lot of information and scares to keep a person involved.

This is the first in a fellow and local Sisters in Crime member. I enjoyed reading a book set on the Oregon Coast. Christine used the setting very effectively--it can be isolated and very dark on those coastal roads, and I totally empathized with Maya about her dissatisfaction with being a waitress at a local hangout that served a lot of pretty greasy fish and fries. Her desire to be close to family gets her into more hot water than the dishes in the sink of the greasy spoon, and she soon finds herself in almost as much trouble as her brother when she takes on an environmental group after local law enforcement falsely accuses him of arson. Fighting against pretty heavy odds in an old car and at odds with her would-be sister-in-law, Maya shows her tough side and exemplary coping skills. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in this regional series.

I started Christine Finlayson’s Tip of the Bone right after completing a Macavity-award-winning mystery. I thought any book in that slot might suffer from the comparison, but Tip of the Bone held its own very well.

Maya, the amateur sleuth, is a young woman floundering after a recent divorce. She’s stuck in a dead-end job waitressing at the Clam Strip in an Oregon coast town. But there’s much to like about her. As she becomes embroiled in a case that pits an environmental group against developers, she proves to be a determined, loyal, gutsy protagonist. Her motives for becoming involved in a missing person and murder case are believable and her actions within the realm of credibility, especially for a twenty-something heroine.

Although Tip of the Bone features an amateur female sleuth, no foul language that I recall, and mostly off stage violence and sex, it is edgier than most cozies, which suits my taste. The central conflict and sub-themes, such as the science of taxidermy, struck me as darker than those of a standard cozy. Instead of the endearing cat we find in a cozy, Maya has been taxed with caring for her neighbor’s gerbils, just one of the details that adds an element of black humor. The vehicle Maya ends up with in Tip of the Bone reviles that of Stephanie Plum in One for the Money.

Tip of the Bone kept me reading and wondering until the end. Well done.

Tip of a Bone was a good mystery. The characters were pretty good. I like Maya. She is trying to look positive not there but trying.
Lots of suspects. Of course no one but Maya is looking to solve anything. The cops believe that Maya's brother died because of what he was doing. Maya believes in her brother.

The plot is Maya has moved up to Newport, OR to be by her brother after her marriage fell apart. She is a waitress for now.
Her brother has joined a eco-activist group. She tries to talk him into quitting. She fails and he dies. She does not believe that he was not alone that night and did not start the fire. She is going to figure out what really happened to him.

The setting for the book is Newport, OR. It is pretty up their.

Their is plenty of drama, action, danger and some romance. Their is some violence and two sexual scenes.

To me the weakness of the story is there is no scenes to lighten or any that build a sense of community outside of the plot of the story. No hobbies or friends besides co-workers and Maya's brother Harley's girlfriend Alison.

I was given this ebook to read and in exchange agreed to give honest review and be part of it's blog tour.

The Oregon Coast

Wind, Cold Water,
Unspoiled, Wild, Salmon,
Agates, and the best Salt Water Taffy…

I have to admit, the setting of this novel is what first intrigued me. I grew up on the Oregon Coast and spent many a summer running through the bay-town streets Christine offers in her novel Tip of Bone. The setting, tone and environmental philosophy in her book demonstrates her close relationship with the area and her understanding of the concerns regarding development on the Oregon Coastline; thus, giving her protagonist Maya Rivers a “non-character” credibility. Maya feels real.

Maya Rivers moves to Newport, Oregon, to start life “fresh.” When her brother is indicated in a crime and no one rises to defend him, she sorts out the clues, follows the trail, until she begins to worry someone is following her. Christine’s skill in offering a good puzzle kept me reaching for the next page, and the twist at the end…

This is a terrific debut mystery. In this deftly plotted mystery Christine Finlayson weaves arson, kidnapping and ultimately murder. Finlayson's heroine is feisty Maya Rivers who is determined to prove that her brother is innocent of eco-terrorism. Everyone from the cops on down to her brother's girlfriend think that Harley set that fire and perhaps others. But Maya is convinced he's been framed and she will put herself in jeopardy to prove it. This is a fun and satisfying read.

I thought the concept of this book was terrific and I really enjoyed the wilderness setting and this aspect of the storyline. The story and the main character pulled me through and I really wanted to know how things played out. I did find the writing style a little flat; a bit more 'show, don't tell' needed, but otherwise, very enjoyable.

Newport, Oregon is the perfect setting for a mystery as shrouded in secrets as that foggy coast. Ms. Finlayson deftly weaves her characters, setting and plot into an engaging and satisfying story without resorting to preachy tropes despite the weighty issues her characters encounter. A strong debut that leaves readers wanting more.
