Cleopatra is certainly a famous name from history, one of the most famous female names but many people don't know a lot about her. As a ruler of Egypt during the initial rise of the Roman Empire she stood as an equal to other rulers.

She used her intelligence to consolidate her rule. She used her wiles and cunning to expand her kingdom. She was romantically linked to two of the most powerful men in the known world and two names that stand out in history, Ceaser and Mark Antony. She commanded on the battle field and amassed a wealth unequaled at the time.

Cleopatra is an amazing historical figure and this book, although short, it a good introduction to the era and the leader that she was. This book would be good for young teens as well, touching all high and low points without too much detail to bog down.

It’s a good introduction to the life of Cleopatra. Very short read. I took a little longer since I went back to take some notes. I did not know about the Hellenistic period (how the Greek conquered and fused with Eastern cultures). From Alexander the Great through the Ptolemaic Dynasty, we get a good bit of background on the times before and during the life of Cleopatra. I also like the pictures and illustrations.

In the boook Cleopatra: ruler of egypt the story is about a young ggirl named cleopatra. i am truly amazed by how much she went through. when her sister seized the throne and was quickly murderd by another sister cleopatra was in grave danger of being murderd. after her father put an end to her older sisters monarchy, cleopatra became the oldest surviving heir to the throne of egypt. after Cleopatra married her husband schemed against her and drove her from her own country. Now she has fallen in love with Julias Caesar. after becoming lovers Caesar helps Cleopatra take control of Egypt. she gives birth to Cesarion (Little Caesar) and also maries then kills her younger brother. during this time she learns of Caesars death.
After a short time she falls in love with Marc Antony. after again becoming lovers she gives birth to twins. then marc antony has to leave Alexandria to quel some uprisings and also to form another aliance with octavian, Caesars heir. four years later he returns to Egypt for help against Octavian who betrays him, and also to see his children and Cleopatra. soon after Antony leaves to fight and cleopatra is pregnant again. she gives birth soon after Antony's defeat, and also just before octavian invaids Egypt. Cleopatra locks herself in a mausolieum and barricades the door. a false message leaks out that she committed suicide. when Antony hears about this he stabs himself in the stomach and dies in Cleopatra's arms. soon after She commits sucide because she does not want to see her beloved country fall. octavian also kills her son, cesarion. this is a wonderfully told tail that will have readers begging for more.

An interesting biography, and I was happy to see it mostly mirrored the adult bio of Cleopatra that I read earlier this summer. I really wished it had more pictures, timelines, etc., and I was disappointed that they left out some of what I thought were the most interesting things about her relationship with Caesar--that her being in Rome was so scandalous and that his obsession with Alexander the Great were what made Cleopatra so attractive to him. Not bad, but we need to do better in chapter bios for our older kids.

This book was a little scattered at moments, but I appreciate it as a first step to understanding Ptolemy, Cleopatra, and Mark Antony. It was actually quite useful for the Roman History class I'm currently taking to get my head started on the time frame and significant characters to focus on.

I also didn't know we were learning about this history in the beginning of this class and just got this book from the library on a whim. I'm not SAYING I'm a witch... but I'm not NOT saying...
