Many experienced writers know that photographs can inspire them to write. This particular title, part of the Little Scribe series, focuses on using pictures to help create poems. Not only are there great photographs that budding writers can use to stoke the creative process, but the book explains different types of poems, including acrostic poems, list poems, haiku, synonym poems, free verse, and clue poems. This book provides plenty of helpful nudging for anyone venturing into the world of poetry.

What a good, clear introduction to the world of writing poems of all kinds: acrostic poems, synonym poems, haiku, free verse, holiday poems, funny poems, clue poems, list poems, how-to poems, feelings poems. McCurry begins with “What Is a Poem?” and then proceeds to explain and illustrate, using examples for each type.

This book would be good to use in the classroom or at home as a means of helping children to learn to look and see their lives from their unique perspectives. Full page pictures serve as prompts for discussion and writing.
