When a young French boy goes away to school, he and his dog are sad to be separated until they find a way to change the school's rules about dogs. By the illustrator of Sophie and Rose.
First thing I notice is how the illustrations, by Wendy Anderson Halperin, are absolutely-and-distinctively exquisite; charming without a whiff of chi-chi.
Then I notice the dialog boxes nested within the pictures -- such a clever, creative concept. Clearly this book is one for a grownup to read, while the kids can fall into the pictures... as if traveling to Narnia... that is, Narnia in France.
SOON, BRING IN THE DISGUISES
Hilarious cannot quite convey all the delightful funniness of this book.
OH, SO FUNNY.
Plus, an ending that I found most satisfying. Quite likely, you will too.
IN CONCLUSION
What a truly original, funny, delightful way to tug at a reader's heartstrings.
This is a cute picture book about a little boy who goes off to a French boarding school and has to leave his dog, Bonaparte, behind. The dog misses the boy, and so tries everything he can think of to gain admittance into this NO DOGS ALLOWED institution. Kids that love their pets will be able to relate to the boy's special bond with this dog.
