I read this short e-book by in a few hours, and was gratified at how much solid information contained in a few pages. The subtitle “An Easy Guide to Picking Up More Customers” is completely justified.
Easy to read and free of the mindless hyperbole that many books on web design and copywriting are plagued with, I learned a lot from my first reading. Beginning with identifying your customer and moving on to describing benefits, identifying your value proposition to writing and editing content, this book was full of good information and resources to help anyone developing or improving their site. Each chapter ended with a series of exercises for skill development. I was also pleased to get a download of exercises and worksheets which I plan to use as I re-organize my site.
The author writes in a clear, accessible style that was never condescending, and I didn’t feel that I was being “sold”, another pet peeve with many marketing books. The afterword states the author is on a mission to stamp out gobbledygook, and in my opinion, she has succeeded with this book.
I highly recommend this for beginners or those more advanced who are updating their sites for the current market.
I have read a lot about marketing and copy so most of this book was just good reminders. It would be great for newbies. I wish she went a bit more in depth but overall it's a good read and helpful to learn how to write copy for websites.
A good introductory level guide on how to write better copy. Clearly written and structured. Lots of helpful advice and examples.
I liked how it pulled together different elements of marketing, sales and writing theory, and showed how to apply them too improve what and how you write.
Not the first book I’ve read on copywriting. While I can’t say there was anything that was particularly new or different here, it was still a quick and easy book to read, and helpful to remind me of the basics.
Give the title focuses on “web” copy though, only really the last chapter goes web-specific talking about SEO, keywords and a little on web design. To be honest, this chapter was the lightest section. Maybe added on to make the book stand out from other generic copywriting guides by putting “web” in the title?
A few times, I also thought the author got a prescriptive as I could think of examples and contexts where the advice wouldn’t quite work. Maybe just my interpretation though?
Those two minor points aside though, overall it’s still pretty good to read. The other chapters read well. If you’re new to the subject, you’ll learn a lot, and if you know a bit about it already, it’s a good reminder of what’s important.
This was another “read the oldest book in my Kindle library” challenge, and it’s… not a *terrible* copywriting-for-the-web primer if you know literally nothing about the topic to start with. At least, after 15 years of being a professional wordnerd, 6 of those specifically as a copywriter, I found nothing in it that I vehemently disagreed with technique-wise, anyway.
That said, it was all very surface-level stuff, but if you’re a new business owner with zero idea of how to write your own web copy, you don’t really want anything more than the basics. You just need the bare minimum that will let you get your damn copy written, and that’s pretty much what this book provides.
As with Finely Tuned, though, I feel like the book is showing its age through everything from enthusing about the “new” iPhone 5 release to the weird thing with constantly revolving gender - apparently a lot of writers in the 2010s were terrified of using singular ‘they’.
But if you can overlook the niggles that come from being dated, as I said above, this isn’t a bad copywriting resource for absolute beginners.
I have been searching for that thing that clicks in my brain to make webcopy improvements. THIS is it. It's simple advice, but no less effective. I felt like I was sitting with a friend over coffee - and had my world changed. Where I was basically panicking before - no more. I have full confidence in writing webcopy, talk to be to my targeted audience, and getting my online buiz off the ground - and sooner than I could've imagined.
I have read a few content writing books throughout my career, and I have to say this is by far the best one I’ve read. I love how the author covers all aspects of copywriting especially SEO, you don’t get that in a book too often. This book is a must read for someone who wants to learn copy or refresh their knowledge. You can refer to any chapter and not feel lost or use the book as a manual.
Decent book, especially for those new to online selling, marketing, or just as a foundation for writing online in general. It's very reader-friendly and after each section/chapter, there are assignments for doing what you just learned about, such as writing effective headlines or creating custom profiles, etc. A solid work and recommended.
I read it's every single word and decided to read it only after I had read Sell Like Crazy. I would say it is a shorter version of Sell Like Crazy. I skimmed through other web copy books as well. This is a good handbook and would serve you when ever you would like to revise your skills. If you are starting it for the first time, I would highly recommend Sell Like Crazy instead.
This book can literally help you to write your whole website copy in a matter of few days or even few hours if you are fast enough and have previous experience.
For small business owners, beginner copywriters or anyone else that needs to learn how to write on website this is a MUST read!
Has a clear step-by-step path that guides you to create the right copy and achieve your goals. The exercises at the end of each chapter are useful to put the information into practice.
I have scoured the Internet for a book like this. I could not be more thankful that I found this gem. It will take you leaps and bounds. You’ll be the Superman of copywriting.
This book is full of useful information that can be immediately implemented to improve your website copy and visitor interactions. If you want more customers pick up a copy.
Quick read but relevant to anyone working on digital communication. Had been learning from copy experts so far , but this book made me realize that digital copy is slightly different. Would have loved more illustrations by the author, though. Overall an interesting read
Great 'first read' straight through, with actionable details to revisit and implement. Concise chapters & clean layout helps move the reader along. Recommend for new website builders and those looking to revamp!
I wish more writers would use this short book format in order to convey ideas and content. It’s like they feel obliged to fill the book with a lot of words to call it a “book”. This author is both analytical and to the point.
Henneke Duistermaat wrote a book with everything bloggers and business owners need to know about web writing. It is a easy to read book with lot of things which make you think: wow, I already knew that! But then you realize you never applied your knowledge. Henneke brings it to the point and as the book is small you can always re read what you need.
For me personal the motivational parts were the most interesting: now I understand I should not write for all but for my ideal reader.
Quick and easy read with lots of valuable information. I appreciate that it is set up as a step-by-step guide I can use when I am ready to begin my copy. I haven't downloaded the worksheets yet, but I am confident they will make it easier to make sure I follow the advice in the book. Excellent choice for a newbie needing quick advice and a little handholding through her first forays into the field.
The reason why I gave it 5 star's, is because I found the book easy to read and understand, this book brings you up to date, regarding how to write your web pages, to engage the reader to buy your product or service, I wanted to understand why my visitors have not bought any products yet and now I know why in depth as I have a better understanding.
Buy this book, to be more persuasive and more engaging to readers.
This book is for those of us that want to improve our website copy but don't have time to take a lengthy course in copywriting. While it's obvious that the author is just skimming the surface of persuasive copy, they share enough to help you improve the way you present your business, product, or services online.
