Luna Werewolves #4

Warren's Guide to Wrangling an Alpha Wolf

Rate this book
Warren McDonald has woken up after a severe injury from another wolf, to discover that someone in his own pack is his mate. He couldn’t be happier to realize that alpha Damian Hart is his mate, but Damian has his own skeletons to handle before he can allow himself to completely open up to Warren.

Damian’s previous mate was murdered by hunters, and after the attack against Warren, he finds himself being incredibly protective of his mate, especially since there is a rival pack living not very far away, and there are rumors abound of a group of human hunters out for werewolf skins.

But Warren needs to show his mate that he is not about to break, and if Damian insists on keeping Warren close-by for his protection, then Warren will make it clear that he cannot live like that, because he will not choose to cage himself for love, even at the risk to his own life.

As hoped for, volume four in the series deals with another preconception of werewolf lore that seems quite widespread - other than when dealing with bonded triads in ménages where each member does get two mates. The fact that each wolf shifter only has one mate, and that's it, is widespread in my reading experience. However, the author neatly ignores that and gives Damien a second chance with Warren. Both of them have much to learn, since Damien isn’t used to such a "pushy omega" as a mate, and Warren has a hard time with suddenly not being independent anymore.

Warren wants a mate. He looks forward to the intimacy and to have someone to love. But when he discovers that Damien is the one he is bonded to, and how bossy the alpha is, Warren is no longer so sure. Being coddled while he is still recovering from the wounds he received in a fight at the end of book three is one thing, but being told to stay in the house and not go into the town is not what he was hoping for. The pack needs money, and Warren wants to contribute, so he plans to become a waiter at the diner. Unsurprisingly, Damien is against it, and, equally expected, Warren ignores the man's edict. He puts himself in danger – but he also discovers vital information.

Damian is possessive, but he has good reason. After losing his first mate, a traumatic experience, to wolf shifter hunters, he is scared to death the same might happen to Warren And even though he is a very capable omega, the fear Damien feels isn’t rational. Can't say I blame him after what he's been through. Luckily, Damien is an alpha with a brain, and when he sees how much having a job mans to Warren, he manages to deal with the situation amazingly well.

The hunters are definitely at it in this installment of the series, developing into a real threat. I loved how Warren ends up making a valuable contribution to the pack's safety, Damien learns how to deal with his fears, and both of them become a very strong couple as a result. If you like shifter stories that don’t necessarily follow the "traditions" of the paranormal genre, if you enjoy reading about mates who get second chances but have a hard time dealing with the reality of how different that second mate is from the first, and if you're looking for a read with lots and lots of hot and reciprocal shifter-on-shifter action, then you will probably like this novella.

I feel... conflicted. While I like the story, there are definitely times that the alphas come across as stupid dumb idiots.. naa just big huge wussies! Or.. a little of both.

On the flip side...I thought the fact that I didn't get the reaction I was expecting from Damien over the job thing was nice. He feels he has more to lose since he's already been down this road with a previous mate. So for him to compromise so quickly was certainly nothing I expected. That would be that this argument between them over Warren getting a job would drag out way longer than necessary.

The hunters setup and the alpha decision to warn is part of the dumbness mentioned. I forget how many alphas are in pack now but I would think seeing as they are Lunas in luna form that don't need 4 of them! One too many I thought. Again the rest of the pack is left (not totally) vulnerable. The stupid decisions these characters are making, they shouldn't be getting by with so little consequences.

So, yes the characters irritate me at times with poor decision making abilities and attitude but the story itself is ok.

I like this series, but when you start having a sex scene that starts on pg 107 and ends on 121 that's 14 pages too long. I skimmed thru to end. scenes seemed to be getting longer and more often than in previous bks.
just imo

Some things that annoyed me:

Warren's TSTL moment. Going into town against orders, telling no one. All the while there's a rival pack, the rogue pack, hunters and god knows what else out there, all who want and would love to get their hands on an omega luna to rape/use as a sex slave and possibly kill. What an idiot Warren is. The only saving grace of that move is he overheard there were hunters in the area, which led to the pack being more informed. I get he didn't want to be coddled by Damian, but honestly all of Damian's concerns are VALID at the moment. If Warren was an alpha luna, that'd be different, but he's an omega luna and can't shift into the second-form. Warren needed to stop crying and rebelling like a teenager and realize there are very real dangers around him. This move on his part didn't endear his character to me. At least realized there are very real dangers out here (duh!).

Sex, sex, sex. I get this is erotica. I just find the sex to be more in the front of matters more so than other books written by this author. Some of them going on for a number of pages. For example, one scene from start (kissing) to completion, it was about NINE-TEN pages (and multiply this by 3-4 sex scenes per book on average!), from one chapter to another. Honestly, I've skipped over more than a few just to get the the plot. It seems the sex is the most thought-out and detailed part of the books and, while I understand it's erotica, I'd appreciate a bit more attention and detail to plot and characterization.

2.5 stars. At this point, I'm still trying to decide if this series will have any focus to it. Currently, the series feels like PWPs, where any plot that is happening is needed so that we can squeeze more sex into story. The characters don't seem real due to their reactions and certain decisions they make.
