Not bad. Leans a little towards nihonjinron type essentialisation of Japanese culture, but if you are familiar with some of these narratives, it is good practice to read in Japanese. Each essay centers around a theme of Japanese culture and language. Some of the examples from spoken Japanese were useful in that they tuned me into phrases and ways of thinking that I might not have noticed otherwise.

If you had understood or just in the process of learning Japanese culture for quite a while, the focus of this book is to introduce you to the terms being used to describe them, and the various explanations behind them.

The cultural depiction itself is not especially unique to Japanese.

I basically like this book because it's relatively easy to read for those with medium to low Japanese reading proficiency, compared to novels or heavier type of books.

A very good book for people that are studying Japanese and want to practice their reading skills a little bit while learning some vocab and Japanese culture behind those words. I'd recommend it for for JLPT N4/N3. As for me it was very easy (I'm N3/N2). You have to know the basic kanjis tho (up to N4 at least), harder ones have furigana next to them.
