Authenticity, Identity, and Being Yourself at Work

Let me start by stating the obvious: it is paramount to be able to bring your authentic self to work. It ensures better overall life satisfaction, increased well-being, and higher levels of emotions, performance, and productivity. And yet, showing your real self is easier said than done. Organizational norms are quite powerful, and they might conflict with your values.

This book tries to give advice based on different real-life stories; they clearly show we still have a long way to go for an equitable society—mainly for those who are part of minority groups. However, personally, I had difficulties relating to the stories, which made it harder to read and absorb the information. Hence the two-star rating.

Listened to the audiobook to vet it for our women’s network book club at work. This one covered some topics that might be tricky for a book club discussion, but I enjoyed this book more than the others. It covered very specific topics and gave actionable steps to overcoming issues at work. I felt like I actually got something out of reading it, and isn’t that the point?

This is a great guide to being your true self at work while maintaining professionalism. From how to say no when things truly don't suit you and everything else in between, it promotes being true to your beliefs and understandings in a professional setting.

A useful guide, especially if you have no or little experience at work. The downside is that it might not be applicable to every and each work environment. You must personalize its recommendations!
