When It Comes to Spooning, I'm a Fork

Rate this book
No one writes about relationships and parenting quite like humorist Marc Prey. Now comes his first book, a laugh-out-loud funny, brutally honest and deeply touching collection of personal stories about one man's relationship with his spouse and offspring. In When It Comes to Spooning, I'm a Fork, Prey takes readers on a journey from first awkward date to raising teenagers, all the while exposing moments that seemingly shift from the hilarious to the poignant in the beat of a heart. And when it's over, readers may discover they've learned something about themselves along the way.

This book is laugh out loud funny! It's well written and is easy to relate to if you have a significant other and/or children....or if you just want to laugh.

Each chapter stands on it's own so it makes a great coffee table book and a great gift for an anniversary, birthday, holiday etc. Maybe you are just on your wife's shit list and need a way to get off that list....this will help...promise.

AND I am not just saying this because my husband is the author. :)

This book was great! I rarely laugh out loud when I read. This book had me rolling! It's about one man's surprisingly funny experiences with marriage and fatherhood. It made me look back at things that happened when I was a kid that must have seemed really strange to my dad. I recommend this book to anyone who is a dad, plans on being a dad, is about to become a dad or who knows a dad!

This is such a fun, sweet book - a humorous look inside life that's not always easy or simple. The author has great, self-deprecating wit and doesn't try to force little anecdotes into being something over-the-top. He lets the stories speak for themselves. Fans of Garrison Keillor or David Sedaris will enjoy this slice of life.

‘Men: we are simple creatures, and we take what you say at face value.’

Michigan screenwriter and humorist Marc Prey has, fortunately for us, makes his book writing debut with what will likely become one of the year’s most popular best sellers – think Francesco Marciulinano’s ‘I Could Pee On This’ et al – books that appear to have as a goal to reinvent that lost art of laughter. The difference between Marc Prey’s manner of writing humor is his skill as a wordsmith: he knows how to convey something ludicrously funny by using polished language so that the first response from the engrossed reader is a smile that gradually grows into a giggle or a guffaw.

How does he manage that? It seems he has found the key to uncovering foibles about relationships and parenting that are subtle to the point of our not pausing long enough to appreciate the innate humor in the situation – as though without pausing to ruminate on the subject will let the incident or trait slip away unnoticed. Marc writes about the everyday things with which we juggle and measure our successes and failures without much thought. Childbirth and outguessing ultrasonic images, the decisions about when to start a family, the birthing process and when to keep quiet and look away, habits such as challenging the gas gage to hit E before looking for a gas station, the use an abuse of sticky notes, attending weddings in RV camps, obsessions on private things like sweatshirts, coping with kids – that is enough to serve as a hors d'oeuvres.

The book is easy reading, peppered with funky illustrations by Stephanie O’Donnell, and dodges around from here to there leaving a trail of laughs. Keep a copy by the commode, by the bedside, on your desk, or wherever else you pause long enough to take a breath away from the at times caustic vapors of just living today and inject that much missed human trait of a hearty belly laugh. Marc Prey – keep on writing!

REVIEW

The title alone is enough to make you smile. The book is an uplifting read. If you are in need off a good laugh definitely get yourself this book. Pull it out when you're down in the dumps. It will bring you back up. The book is very well written and has a variety of short stories that go into the different relationships of one man. You will certainly remember the times you have been in the same situation as the story you're reading. I know I have. Anywhere from finding the person you'll spend your life with, to raising a family. We all know what predicaments a family can get into. This book is screenwriter Marc Prey's hilarious and wonderful debut. The book grabs your attention once you look at the cover. When you open the book to the first page, you will be hooked. You might as well figure that this book will be read in one sitting and then put on the shelf. You will want to keep this one so you can pull it out when you need a smile or laugh. I would suggest this book to anyone, not just moms and dads. You will find when you're done that you may have actually learned a thing or two about yourself. There was one chapter that I couldn't help but laugh and think back.

ARE WE THERE YET? How many times have you heard that? I know I have heard it many, many times. How about THE GRASS IS ALWAYS GREENER.
How many times have we all thought that? And one more we probably all have experienced at least once, RUNNING ON EMPTY, That gas gauge is always wrong.

GRAB A COPY AND LAUGH, IT'S GOOD FOR YOU!!!!

I would give this book 4 SPOONS and 1 FORK

I was given a complimentary copy of WHEN IT COMES TO SPOONING, I"M A FORK by the author, Marc L. Prey for my opinion. No other compensation was received.

When It Comes to Spooning, I'm a Fork is a book by humorist and screenwriter Marc Prey, a collection of short stories inspired by the author’s life, on the topic of relationships between men and women. From dating to marriage and parenthood, Marc Prey’s short stories, about the life he shares with his wife and two children, are presented from a man’s perspective with great style and a lot of humor. The book is accompanied by amazing graphics, great cover, and a beautiful writing style. From the engaging title to the suitable chapter graphics, this book has everything that it takes to keep a reader interested until the end.

Marc Prey does a fantastic job with his first book. When It Comes to Spooning, I'm a Fork is written from a man’s point of view but aimed at readers of all sexes. This fantastic book uses humor to teach us a lifetime lesson: men struggle, men have feelings and opinions; men care as much or even more than women about all the things that make a marriage. Women reading this will find it funny and true, and they will also be surprised by the similarities that the two sexes share. It’s a general belief that men and women are separated by a sea of differences, but Marc Prey sheds some light on the matter with the help of his unique sense of humor. All in all, this debut book does an excellent job in keeping us entertained and wanting more. It is a wonderful start for Marc Prey, and I can only hope that he has other books coming for his readers. (Reviewed for Readers' Favorite)

Just shy of forty true stories that Pevy describes in the introduction this way:

Each of the stories contained in this book is, to the best of my recollection, accurate and complete, warts and all. This, despite the directive from my lovely wife to write her thinner. Some of the stories have appeared previously in print and electronic magazines, others have never before seen the light of day. But all reflect the life and times of an average American male with a wife and two kids, struggling to maintain mastery over a domain that was never really under his control to begin with.

His description is better than whatever words I might come up with to explain these stories. But what he fails to mention is the humor. Pevy has the ability to find the humor in any situation, even when that means we’re laughing at (or should that be with) him. At the risk of giving a clue as to how ancient I am, I’d describe When It Comes to Spooning, I’m a Fork as the male version of one of those Erma Bombeck books my mother used to read in the 60s and 70s. A fun, light-hearted read for a family man or the women forced to live with their foibles.

In his heartwarming and hilarious debut, When It Comes to Spooning, I’m a Fork, screenwriter Marc Prey transitions to author with a book that is definitely one that everyone must add to their reading list. Whether you are married with kids or not, you will enjoy and relate to many of the experiences that were talked about in his book. Its themed chapters, filled with stories from his life being a husband and a father, takes the reader on a journey from meeting his wife through raising their kids. Some moments leaving you laughing out loud and others giving you aha or why didn't I think that situations.

Prepare to read this book in one sitting because once you start, you won't want to stop. This is definitely not a how to but a sort of insightful introspection from a dad’s point of view that is a refreshing perspective. Not to limit this to just parents, this book can be read by anyone who wants a good laugh. Whether you laugh all the way through, find some inspiration along the way or just nod in agreement, this is one of those books that will make you smile.

What can I say about this book that the title doesn’t do for me? Well for starters, this book is fantastic, funny and well written. I definitely would recommend this collection of short stories about one man’s different relationships. They range from finding is soul mate to the birth and raising of his two sons. I think that my favorite would have to be the one about the low gas gage. I don’t know how many times I have pushed our large mini-van those last few feet to the gas station. If you have a chance and need a good laugh get this book today!

I received this book as an early review copy for my honest review and I have given it. The opinions expressed herein are my own.

I received this book in a First Reads giveaway...

This book was so fun and enjoyable! It is filled with short stories throughout the author's marriage along with stories about fun and sweet experiences with his children, and it definitely had me smiling, laughing, and "aww"-ing throughout the whole thing. The book is so easy to flit through; any time I had a free minute or two I would read another story and I have to admit I enjoyed every last one! The author's writing is very witty and I would definitely recommend this book for a quick and light-hearted read!

A job well done for Marc Prey in his highly relatable debut novel. Bringing levity to everyday life and proving that it is good to laugh at yourself, Prey has written a book that often left me thinking, "I could see that as a sitcom episode." It is well written and each "episode" offers it's own scenario and unique humor, allowing you to read leisurely. I found it hard to put down and finished it in a matter of hours.

I highly recommend this quick fun read, and challenge you to not find yourself among the pages.

If I could give it a 4 1/2 I would.
