Mars no Kiss

Rate this book
Yukari is a "bad girl." She rebels against her controlling mother by dyeing her hair, polishing her nails and having an older boyfriend, with whom she has an intimate relationship. In fact, as she notes, that's kind of all they have right now. He never takes her anywhere; they just go to a karaoke box, sing a bit, and have sex.

Miki is a "good girl." She's tall, and has classic Japanese beauty. She's quiet and bookish and smart. And a bit aloof.

The two are forced to share a double desk at the beginning of the term which annoys Yukari no end. Like most bad girls, her initial reaction is disdain and derision for the good girl's behavior. But, one day, after school, she sees Miki in the Art Room, gently kissing a statue of Mars and her heart starts to race. When someone comes up from behind, both Miki and Yukari know that they've been seen, and everything changes between them.

Edit 2023.11.19: The art style is generally clean and consistent, but now that I'm rereading, it bothers me how much it sexualizes the girls, mostly how theirs mouths are drawn and how there are completely unecessary moments of showing the gyaru's thighs (like that one shot of her thighs from under her school desk when she's thinking of the other girl).

This does not have a "happy ever after" ending, and it contains multiple het sex scenes, which are mostly not showing more than breasts but still (meant to be) uncomfortable to read. This was actually pretty genuine and realistic. I very much enjoyed the main character's development, and that it avoided the easy tropes (tsundere straight-A student, manipulative popular girl, bullying from the popular clique, etc). The art is also nice, clean and realistic. It is a bit on-the-nose about some stuff like the background explanations of why they act as they do or the thought process leading to change for the main character, but it felt genuine and warm in the interactions between the main characters.

this is cute and short, the ending chapter is very sweet.
I thought the more odd scenes were commentary on yukari's relationship with her boyfriend but looking at the author's other works it seems that might not be the entire reason..

Bro what was the authors problem bro💔💔💔💔💔 BROOOOOO idk jn my HESD tbey get married tbat just hurt me man oh my gosh I feel so bad for yukira(?) the fist time she felt genuine loce it was returned in a different way ughhhh I’m in anguish. I have one qualm with the book! I’m looking at the author sideways bc why is a 35 year old man writing about two high school girls idk like if it was a woman okay maybe she ahd a similar experience but maybe I’m judging harshly mahbe he’s gay and idk but yeah I’m looking at him a bit sideways. But yeah another qualm I’d almost have is that she was lowkey pressuring miki but that’s all she knows really so I can’t judge that hard. UGHHHH I FEEL SO IGHHH LIKE BROOOOO. Sad. Yeah. Ugh the covers💔

Cute story. I'm not into shoujo ai but there are a few that i liked and Mars no Kiss is one of them.
The ambiance is very delicate and slow paced and intimate. I really liked the main characters who are balancing themselves perfectly.
Friendship is a beautiful thing.

This was just depressing, really...
Sad stories aren't exactly my thing, but the art was as interesting as ever, so I'll have to give it a decent rating.
