About the author

Catherine Clément (born February 10, 1939) is a prominent French philosopher, novelist, feminist, and literary critic. She received a degree in philosophy from the prestigious Ecole Normale Supérieure, and studied under such luminaries as Claude Lévi-Strauss and Jacques Lacan, working in the fields of anthropology and psychoanalysis. A member of the school of French feminism, she has published books with writers Hélène Cixous and Julia Kristeva.

Um bom "passeio" entre a passagem de uma Índia Britânica a uma Índia independente, onde se destacam figuras incontornáveis, como Gandhi, Nehru, Sarojini Naïdu, Lord & Lady Mountbatten e a história de amor entre esta e o primeiro ministro, da Índia.

Magnifique roman historique qui raconte la romance entre Nehru, grande figure de l'indépendance indienne et la femme du dernier Vice Roi de l'Inde. Romantique, déchirant, la chaleur indienne et cette histoire douce et implicite provoque en nous une douleur sourde, comme si on se rappelait d'une rupture amoureuse passée.

I found this book fascinating on many levels.

It was very interesting to read about that very painful period of Indian history known as the period of the partition. The persons involved were all larger than life, the last Vice Roy of England, his incredible wife, Nehru and of course Ghandi, just to mention a few.

If there were way to talk to those that have preceded us it would be most interesting to know what Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, thinks about the current problems of his country.

The incredible love story between Nehru and Lady Mountbatten is very touching.

Tragic to learn that Lord Mountbatten who fought in World War II, lived through excessively dangerous situations in India was killed in England by an IRA bomb. How ironic!

I visited, while in New Delhi the home of Nehru where he lived and died. It was exciting to see pictures of all the people that I had just read about

Un roman intéressant pour mieux comprendre comment s'est déroulée la transition vers l'indépendance de l'Inde, ex-colonie britannique, sur fond de l'histoire d'amour entre Nehru et Lady Mountbatten, épisode qui demeure très connu en Inde. Quelques longueurs parfois mais à recommander tout de même.

No sé que tiene este país pero cada vez me llama con más fuerza y mientras no voy, leo que es casi lo mismo y curiosamente todas las obras que he leído hasta ahora sobre la India están basados en hechos reales. Sin embargo, al tenerlos novelados mi cerebro, no siempre tan inteligente como cabría desear, los lee como ficción pero no lo son. Por eso, me ha resultado extraño encontrarme trozos narrados como los pensamientos de los personajes, nadie sabe que pasa por la cabeza de otra persona y tratándose de personas reales, a ratos, me ha resultado molesto.
Por otra parte, retrata de forma muy completa el proceso de partición de la India, la creación de Pakistan, la tan anhelada independencia india y sus consecuencias y a todos sus protagonistas desde Gandhi pasando por Lord Louis Mounbatten hasta Nehru y sus compañeros del Partido del Congreso. A ratos un poco denso y tedioso merece la pena por aprender un poco más sobre la India en particular o política en general, por inmiscuirse desvergonzadamente en los entresijos de una relación prohibida y por estar un poquito más cerca del monzón.
