"Perhaps the most beautiful book of New England photos ever published."―WGME-TV, Portland, Maine No place speaks to our soul as eloquently as New England in the fall. These superb photographs celebrate its rustic charm, brilliant autumn colors, and romantic tranquility. Each scene―enriched by the writings of Dickinson, Thoreau, Frost, and more―brings a moment of private discovery and awakens a sense of home. 90 full-color photographs
Ferenc Máté has made a career of out documenting his own quests—whether it’s restoring a Tuscan ruin, building a vineyard from scratch, or sailing the seven seas.
Born in Transylvania, he escaped at age eleven when the Hungarian revolution was crushed by Soviet tanks. He grew up in Vancouver and has lived in California, Paris, Rome, the Bahamas and New York. He has worked on a railroad extra-gang and as a boat-builder, photographer, deckhand and book editor. He is the author of 16 books translated into 12 languages. His international best seller A Vineyard in Tuscany, was a New York Times Notable Book and short listed for Spain’s Camino del Cid literary award. His Dugger/Nello historical novel series have made him “the leading nautical writer of our time.” With his wife and son, he works the Máté vineyards surrounding the 13th century friary they restored in Montalcino, Italy. They have won global recognition for making one of the world’s best Brunellos.
"Only that day dawns to which we are awake." Henry David Thoreau This quotation is in the beginning of this superb book. I display it, open to different pages of the most unbelieveable photography each autumn. I have always loved New England, but this book is for everyone who appreciates beauty, nature, history, and truly fine photography and writing! Highly recomended to everyone!
DNF This would be an easy book to finish but I was bored. I was thinking that this was just a photo book but it turned out its not. The author includes parts of stories and poetry about nature and New England. My problem is that it seemed the photos weren't as important as the writings were.
Words cannot begin to describe the full splendor contained within this book. The extraordinary images combined with exceedingly fitting writings nearly brought me to tears countless times. It was like being in New England all over again. The tour planner at the back was also very enjoyable particularly for being a tour planner. After having read through the book and seeing all the photographs, it was easy to imagine the descriptions given in the tour planner(however, I would have enjoyed it more had they provided some photos of some of the sites mentioned).
I'm such a sucker for photos on this subject. I know it's because I dearly wish I could spend every Autumn in New England, but until that happens I will continue to look at the pretty pictures. Mate, an Italian, has created a little niche for himself in photographing New England locales and has several books of his seasonal photos available. While the pictures are beautiful, I had to knock off a star because this book has many of the same excerpts and poems included in his previous book of Autumn photos, which I also own.
