I received this book from the author for an honest review.
First off, I really enjoyed reading Sweet Deception! This is a short book, but it is jam-packed with so many different events that will play with your emotions. I love how this book is set up. Grace gives us the different POVs between the main characters. In some books this doesn’t work out, but here it flows together very well! I think it helps the readers understand the story even better.
We are first introduced to Cassie. She lost both of her parents in a terrible car accident. She moves away from home to try and deal with the pain. Unfortunately, her grandmother suffers a heart attack and has to move back home to help take care of her and her grandmother’s flower shop. My heart really hurt for Cassie because of everything she is going through. While she is working she meets the "player" of the town, Blake. He is amazingly gorgeous and very cocky. He is known to sleep around, but when he meets Cassie he wants to change his life. Their relationship progresses and they become head over heels for each other. Little does Cassie know that Blake has a secret that could break them forever. Oh, and you get to meet their quirky best friends, Laurel and James! I love their characters! James’ story, Sweet Reflection, is supposed to come out later this year. I can’t wait to read it!
I cannot lie, this book definitely made me cry. There were many sad tears and many happy tears. At times, I was mad at Blake. But, once I found out the whole truth behind his secret I felt extremely bad for him. I absolutely LOVE Cassie and Blake together. I think that they are perfect together, especially given their past. They can really help each other out.
Some burning questions to think about are: Can Blake really turn his life around to give Cassie the life she deserves? What secret is Blake keeping? Can their relationship move past Blake’s secret?
Bottom line – Read this book if…
…you want a quick read. …you love an emotional, romantic story. …you want another book boyfriend. ☺
I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is a sweet, romantic story. Just because it's sweet doesn't mean it lacks for hotness. The characters are very like able. Even the secondary characters are well developed. The author does a good job of balancing the tormented angst that both Cassie and Blake have within against their humor and small town surroundings. Blake is a scene stealer. He is funny, hot, tormented and just enough of a smart ass to make him irresistible.
Cassie is reunited with her former BFF Laurel whom I ultimately attached with more-so than Cassie. Blake's counterpart James is hilarious and you can see a spin off of James' story coming from a mile away. Cassie's Gran is funny yet down to earth reminding me a lot of the gran character from the Sookie Stackhouse series.
There are small town bitties that should really mind their own business. Horrible mean girls that you will find yourself wanting to pop their fake boobs with a sharp fork and very heated, sexually tension filled scenes. Be on the look out for the club scene involving lots of hip grinding dance floor action. There are times when Cassie's feelings are so well written that I felt it in the pit of my stomach.
So why only 3 stars?? It was a bit more predictable in several situations than I can tend to overlook. Although I REALLY enjoyed the secondary characters, I don't think in a book #1 of a series that I should be as or more connected with the secondaries than the primaries. Some of the descriptive qualities could have been tightened up more to do a little more showing v/s telling.
In summary, I think this author has loads of talent and can't wait to see where she goes. Fun, fast read with lots of 'felt' emotion.
Three years ago Cassandra Wilson's parents were killed in a car accident. Three months ago she came home from work and caught her boyfriend in bed with her friend who was also her assistant at work. Two days ago she received a call from the hospital back home that her Gran had a heart attack. So here she was, moving back to look after her Gran and help her out in her florist shop until she is back on her feet. Being back home is difficult because it brings back all kinds of memories of her parents and friends that she left behind. She has some people she needs to apologize to for the way she just left town after the death of her parents, but she felt she just couldn't deal with the whole situation. She tells her Gran that the first person she needs to see is her best friend Laurel. Then not long after her return Laurel shows up at the florist shop to invite her for a girls night out. The night comes for them to go out to enjoy themselves, she tells Laurel she will meet her at the bar. When she gets there she has to look around for her then finally finds her sitting on a stool at the bar flirting with the bartender. Laurel had always had been lethal in the looks & personality departments and the men always seemed to flock around her. After talking and drinking for a while Laurel points out a man and says he has been staring at cassie. Cassie finds him and he has two women draped all over him, reminding her of her Ex-boyfriend. He spots her looking at him and he winks at her. The enjoy some dancing and Cassies goes back to the bar to get a drink because Laurel has possibly found a mate for the night. As she calls the bartender over to order she hears a deep voice order her a drink and one for himself. He leans close and says "I'm Blake". Cassie has seen his kind before and immediately she isn't interested in this arrogant man so she asks him where his two girlfriends are as she walks away. after the odd meeting Cassie and Blake keep running into each other and he never gives up on talking to her, She eventually starts to change her mind about him and decides she likes him and they start dating. Then people start warning her to stay away from him, telling her he isn't the person she thinks he is and he is dangerous, but she doesn't she is or understand and each time she asks he changes the subject. She comes home from work one day to find that her Gran has set her up and the friend and grandson would be there soon. So to she sits through dinner to appease her Gran then finds out it was more than just the simple dinner and she was set up. She is getting more and more frustrated with Blake because he wont open up to her and share things with her and she feels like he is hiding something from her and it causes a big argument between them. Then she finds out what Blake is hiding, but the information that she is told is only a partial truth so she goes to find out from him if what she heard is true. As usual he can not discuss it and she feels more hurt and deceived by his actions so she tells him it is over between them. Some time passes and she goes out with Laurel to try to get over the hurt but it isn't working, then Blake comes into the bar with a woman clinging to him. She leaves and again he tries to talk to her but she tells him she can't hear half truths that she needs to be trusted with the whole truth and since he couldn't do that it was over. Blake's best friend James then comes to pick up Blake's weekly flower order and Cassie makes a remark about it to which James calls her out on it and then tells her he takes flowers to the cemetery every week, and Cassie is so shocked she asks James if she can go with him to take the flowers. They go to the cemetery and he shows her where Blake's sister is buried and what he does next blows her mind. Her and James talks about what happened and she realizes that mistakes have been made. Then she has a conversation with Blake and her opens up with her but she tells him she isn't sure she can deal but before she leaves he gives her a paper and tells her to please read it before she makes any decisions. Blake leaves and she reads the paper then she texts James to tell him Blake needs him. She has something she needs to do to put some closure on this whole ordeal, then she will go see Blake one more time.
This book was a wonderful story. The story is told with points of views from the characters Cassie, Blake, and James. When I first found the points of view I wasn't sure I was going to like it like that as I had never read anything set up in this manner & I was thinking that it might be confusing. But the author brought it through very smoothly and it flowed very nicely so I enjoyed it quite a bit. It did make me cry in a few parts as the intensity built and there were some parts that were heartbreaking. I would recommend this to all my friends.
I was given this book as an ARC by the author in exchange of an honest review.
It’s been a while since I read a full length, plain old romance novel. Reading Sweet Deception made me realise how much I missed it. It was refreshing to get out of the lives of werewolves and vampires and into the very human lives of Cassie and Blake.
Three years ago her parent’s died, so Cassie left town and went to London. Two months ago she found her boyfriend of two years cheating on her with his secretary who also happens to be her fiend, so she moves out. And two days ago she receives a phone that changed her life for ever.
Cassie’s grandmother had a heart attack and now she is back home; a place she misses terribly but can’t bear to go to, because it reminds her of her dead parents. But she is back to take care of the only family she has left-her grandmother.
Coming back has opened old wounds and with everyone asking her if she is alright is getting too much for her. She is helping out her grandmother at the florist when in walks the town’s very own bad boy, Blake Richards.
There is an instant attraction between Blake and Cassie, but, Blake doesn’t do relationships and Cassie has had enough heartbreak to last a lifetime and doesn’t need more. But that does not stop either of them from thinking about the other.
Blake is bad news but when after a night out with her best friend, Lauren, Cassie gets attacked, Blake saves her. Cassie realises that maybe Blake is not all like he looks. She wants to get to know the man behind the mask. Seeing Cassie hurt, pulls at something primal in his heart and all he wants to do is keep her safe. But Blake knows, he is not the kind of man Cassie deserves.
Despite his reputation, Cassie decides to give Blake a chance. But she did not count on women ambushing her in the ladies room in a restaurant telling her Blake is dangerous. Not to mention her grandma says the same. But Cassie is determined to give Blake a chance.
Cassie and Blake start making a life together, full of happiness but the past threatens to tear them apart. She puts her heart on the line, but he still doesn’t trust her with his pain. Their pasts have been intertwined in a way Cassie thought impossible. And now Blake’s refusal to be honest almost destroys them. Will Blake fight for the one woman he loves more than life? Will he open his heart and trust Cassie with the one secret that could break them forever? Will Cassie be able to forgive Blake for the secret he is keeping?
The author answers all these questions. Ms. Henderson keeps us guessing, but somewhere along the line you do suspect the truth. It is a well written piece of work and an absolute delight to read. I laughed, I cried and I fell in love with Cassie and Blake reading this book. What more can a reader ask from an author? Sweet Deception has made it into my all time favourite romances and it’s gonna stay there.
An easy 4/5 stars for Sweet Deception. I absolutely loved and adored this book.
I don't want to say that this book was predictable, but some of it was. Okay, maybe not the book..but the common thread between them. I kinda saw some of it coming. I didn't know what it was, or what was going in... but you just get this feeling that Blake and Cassie are linked between the biggest events that they have went through. Cassie had had a rough time of lately. From losing both her parents to walking in on her boyfriend cheating on her with her friend, who is also his secretary (SLUT!).. Then her Gran had a heart attack. So she goes back home to look after her. Pretty shakey ground we have here for her. But, as it is with any small town, everyone know everything about everyone. So she starts to help out in we grandmothers flower shop and runs into super hottie Blake and her old best friend. Blake is our typical ladies man narcissistic hottie. But this ladies man also has some pretty dark secrets that are eating him up. He lost someone extremely close to him so he keeps people at a distance. Sex is just sex. He doesn't do relationships. But then he meets Cassie and she flips his ladies man world upside down and breaks those barriers down- just as he does for her. It was so cute the way they started their relationship kind of hiding it. But she keeps getting g these weird warnings from people when they find out their dating. Lets not forget all the jealous hoe bags, yes Amber- I'm talking about you. Jealousy is a hard pill to swallow for the sluts.. i mean ladies. Ugh, I don't know how she dealt with that... woman, and I use that term loosely. Sabotage seems to be the name of her game. But he's Cassie's hero and they're both so drawn to each other like a moth to a flame. I was struggling with the secret he holds being kept locked up for so long. I was like okay, out with it already. Is it really worth losing someone you love? Because you know you love her.. just ADMIT IT! But then once she finds out the truth of it all, I'm not sure what makes it worst. Not coming from him or the secret itself. Once you find out the whole story you're kind of heartbroken for both of them. You can't blame the people involved but what she does with the information shows how strong she is. All this time we've seen sweet, spunky, sassy Cassie. Now we see how strong she is. The only thing you can tell through the story is that they're losses are linked in some way. All in all this was a good book. I liked it. I give it 3.5 stars. Oh... And I think you'll like the teaser at the end ;)
Cassandra Wilson has returned home from London. She is done with city living and her ex, Dan.
She has gone back to Stamford to care for her grandmother who has just had a heart attack and moves back into the home she grew up in. Overwhelmed with feeling of the past and wounds that have not closed, Cassie has come back to move forward.
She's left her law practice to help out at her gran's flower shop when she is introduced to the town's most eligible bachelor, Blake Richards. Blake is the town heartbreaker with a line of women that way too long. When he walks into the shop he is taken aback by Cassie's I-don't-give-a-hoot attitude and casualness. Not use to a woman who doesn't fall over herself Blake is intrigued and wants to know more.
So as chance would have it they are reunited again at the local watering hole. When an unwanted encounter with a drunk patron occurs outside, it's Blake to the rescue. Cassie is then faced with waking up in her hero's home. She is not only appreciative to Blake but finds that he is charming and quite lovely.
Cassie tries to make sense of it all she is sure that she doesn't want a relationship with tall, dark, and dangerous but finds that resistance is hard. Could she fall for a man like Blake?
Blake finds that he wants to get to know Cassie more, not just have sex and is finding himself in unfamiliar territory and is hiding something only time can heal. Can Blake defeat his demons and move on?
Star-crossed lovers.
The book moves a bit slow, and so does the character development, for me. Her characters lack a bit of dimension, so being invested in Blake and Cassie may take a while. However as you progress through the book it will undoubtedly build and by the end you will definitely find the "Happily Ever After."
Grace Herderson's freshman effort is a refreshing point of view with first person dialogue. It is not a long romance story, where you will find a few hundred pages of elongated hours of great sex. But it is a simple story of two people trying to find their way and a few really passionate moments.
I would recommend this story for a plane ride over the Atlantic, and you'd be quite satisfied at the end of the ride.
I received a copy of Sweet Deception in exchange for an honest review!
Cassie has returned to her home town after fleeing three years ago when her parents were tragically killed in a car accident. Cassie has somewhat begrudgingly returned home to rebuild her life and also to run her sick Grandmother's Florist - oh and did I mention her ex was a cheating dirtbag?!
Town bad boy Blake comes in to buy flowers and takes an instant shine to Cassie. As your typical bad boy, Blake sleeps around leaving a trail of broken hearts and doesn't really care about anything until he meets Cassie. Practically everybody is against Cassie and Blake being together, none more so than her Grandmother. It was fairly obvious her Grandmother had a greater reason for wanting to keep them apart than his bad boy rep, but it took me a long time to establish what it was.
The secondary characters James and Laurel (Blake and Cassie's friends) were great and the club scene was hilarious - I'm looking forward to their story in the follow up.
Oh Blake, Blake, Blake! I love your name and have a massive soft spot for you, even with your arrogance and cocky behaviour. BUT you kept a LOT of secrets. Sometimes I wanted to shout at Blake for not being upfront, but after the big reveal I actually felt bad for my doubts.
Sweet Deception is a cute contemporary romance, which is both extremely heart-breaking and maddening, yet sweet and hopeful with some really funny moments.
4 Stars in my Sky!
My fav non-spoilery quotes:
•"Well babe, just so you know, I don't have a girlfriend. I'm free and single. And looking. Let me know if you want to audition. It's a very satisfying role."
•"You think I'm trying to chat you up? Well aren't we 'little miss thinks a lot of herself'!"
•"Just what are you planning on doing with me out here in the woods? Not going to attack me are you?" I ask cautiously, only half-joking. "Not unless you want me to," he replied winking at me.
There is a need for Cassie and Blake and it all started with an accident three years ago. Their lives were changed and it took them sometime to come into terms with it.
CASSIE "Damn it. He drives me fucking crazy." She had it rough and has to hide (in London) ti cover up her grief but she was still unable to move on. She was finally released from her torment when she returned home.
BLAKE "... You're fucking everything to me. I want you. I want us to be together." He was also hiding grief and in turn hurt Cassie. He learned to share to move on and be happy.
The book... I'm not inlove with it. It felt like it lacked the luster it promised. For me, it feels predictable and flat. The story was not forced but it's almost there.
Cassie's parents were killed in a hit and run car accident and all she had left was her grandmother. When she heard of her g'mas heart attack she rushed home to help her. While running her g'mas floral shop she meets Blake. The local hotty and all around man whore. After a sticky situation outside a bar, Blake becomes entwined in Cassie's life. After being the victim of a cheating ex-boyfriend Cassie's not too sure she is up to being a part of Blake's life. With people (to include her grandmother) constantly warning her off Blake, Cassie begins to realize he has secrets. Secrets that could possibly destroy her. Throughout the book one starts to wonder just how many things Blake is keeping from Cassie. I had a feeling I knew what was gonna happen and BAM.....I was correct. I was given a copy of the book for an honest review. This is a quick read and a very SWEET love story that is filled with DECEPTION!!!!!!!
Cassie left town three years ago after the tragic deaths of her parents. Coming back after her grandmothers heart attack to help out at her florists shop until she can get back on her feet Cassie meets Blake. Blake is a total manwhore with a flirtatious reputation to match, Cassie won't fall for his cheap lines, but Blake is persistant and eventually the two come together realizing there is more there than just a one night stand waiting to happen. Problem is even as they become more serious Cassie realizes Blake has a secret and it could be one big enough to split them up for good.
Great story with the right amount of romance, mystery, tragedy, comedy and smutty scenes. Can't wait to read James's story in the next installment in this series. Nothings worse than the best one night stand ever than her completely not remembering it!!!!
I volunteered to do a review for Ms. Henderson. I'm really glad she allowed me the opportunity to read her book as I really, really enjoyed it! The book had it all in that I laughed, I cried, and I couldn't help the "awe" at the end.
I loved the teasing between the characters which leads to their growing relationship and finding that they enjoy each other's company. Add the suspense of what happened to Cassie's parents, everyone warning Cassie away from Blake and Blake's painful secret, I couldn't help wondering if the whole relationship was going to end in disaster. However, I did finally get my HEA and everything came together very nicely.
If you enjoy a story that can draw out your emotions, give you a fairy tale story and give you the HEA ending, then this book is for you.
I was offered this ARC from the lovely author in exchange for an honest review, so here it is... 3 stars!!
All in all, it was an okay read.
But sometimes I felt that both main characters sounded a bit like they were in highschool rather than grown ups.. The beginning especially felt a bit rocky for me.. But eventually it became smoother.. I think if this were longer, it would have had the chance to become a knock-out!
It could do with a bit more editing.. But for a debut novel, I think it was good :)
Wishing the author all the best in her work and all the thanks for the opportunity of reading and reviewing her lovely story.
I received a copy of Sweet Deception in exchange for an honest review!
i started reading this book as was thinking to myself oh no another cliche' romance story where hero rescues girls heart n live happily ever after. well i was partly true it is a hea kinda book but the story line is full of twists that you just dont excpect. i enjoyed the characters but just couldnt quite fully get into them dunno if it was just me. but i did love the book in the end and even had tears in my eyes.
i recommend this book to anyone that believes love can conquer all check it out on goodreads even an add it to your TBR list today
This book had me hooked from the beginning. Cassie lost her parents in a car accident and then she moved away from her home town to escape. Now she is back because her grandmother is sick. She starts working in her grandmothers flower shop. That is where she meets Blake. He comes in every week to buy flowers. The attraction is instant and I love the banter between these two. They get to know each other but Cassie still feels that he is holding back something that could hurt her. Little does she know that he holds the key as to what really happened to her parents. Will the truth save them or will it be too much? Loved this story and can't wait to read the next book in this series.
I received an ARC copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. The story focused on Cassie who had returned to the hometown where her parents were killed. She returned after a devastating encounter with her boyfriend. Against multiple warnings, she falls for Blake, who harbors a secret that can change everything.
I like my fair share of angst in a plot, but sometimes the sadness is just too much. The couple just seem to always have a dark cloud over them. Overall, a satisfying read and I'm interested in reading Book 2.
I received an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review. This was a pretty good story. The characters were well developed and the plot was well written too. I'll have to say, I think James was my favorite person in this and can't wait to see what happens next with him. This was definitely a quick and easy read, perfect for a lazy day.
Thanks to the author for the ARC and the chance to review this book.
I enjoyed this book. It was a sweet, drama filled short story and the ending didn't leave me hanging :) The characters were likable and considering it's pretty short you still get to feel the connection between them. When it was over I was kinda wishing it had been longer!
Cassie has lost her parents, found her boyfriend cheating on her with her friend & now her grandmother has had a heart attack. She moves back home to take care of her grandmother and falls for Blake. There is something he is hiding & she can't figure out what it is. His secret can ruin their relationship. Will he share his secret with her? Can they make it work?
